I don't know what I was expecting, but it felt more like an episode of Who Do You Think You Are.

The difference being, it wasn't a person being the subject, but a house.

I shall watch the next episode with interest.

Indeed, especially a glimpse inside The Athenaeum where few people in Liverpool will have visited. It's a fantastic place.

A superb hours viewing even including the research jaunt to America :)

Unless I’ve missed it - very possible! - it’s odd that no specific mention has been made of the ‘Female Penitentiary’ that appears on many of the Victorian maps of Falkner street. It’s directly opposite 62, or 58 as it was.

I'm looking forward to seeing this at some point. I really love that end of town, some of the pubs are boss (my favourite is Peter Kavanagh's - obviously :D), and if you want to look around a similar grand old Liverpool House you could try the Embassie Hostel around the corner, on Falkner Square, you couldn't spend a better afternoon chatting with Murph and Kevin Snr about footy, music and life over a cup of tea or a glass of red.

I suspect that before they chose this particular property to focus on, they'd probably looked at dozens, if not hundreds around the country.

I suspect that most of the others didn't cut the mustard, because although they may have had detailed past histories, the history's had gaps in them.

It's no surprise that it was chosen that a property in a big city was to feature, as in general,  the bigger cities or towns would generally have the better historical records to fall back on.

Also, a port like Liverpool, would generally have a very good set of records (from various sources), going back several hundred years or more.

There may well of been more interesting properties to feature, from another area, but unless there's is an unbroken chain of records on that particular property, it kinds of spoils the continuity.

Just my thoughts, though. I wouldn't know for certain.

As for the series.
I thought this last one was the best yet (No. 3 of 4).

The other programmes tracing the Victorian era etc, seem to have less relevance to me.

The ones closer to now, ie: 20th century - up to modern times, I can kind of relate more to them.

Love the series and caught up with episode 3 yesterday.
Its a nice angle, linking residents of a house to the history of the City, but I agree with the comment above about relating more to more recent history. Having living relatives of more recent residents was a really good touch and provided greater insight into their lives as was having first hand accounts of the bombing. I found all the footage of Liverpool around that time fascinating because it brought to life the stories my grandparents used to tell me about the city when they were young.

Think he was trying to say that although today's Paradise street doesn't look like a step down from today's Church street, that it wasn't the case at the time he was covering the saddler fella.

Couldn't find a thread on this so giving interested folks the nod as it's available on BBC 'i' player - a fascinating 4 part BBC2 documentary using a forensic exploration of a single house's 180 year history/occupation to reveal the wider historical picture of the city of Liverpool specifically and Britain in a broader sense.

Certainly anyone wishing to gain a decent insight into the rise/fall/rebirth of our incredible city should take a decco.

I was looking forward to this episode & sorta fearing how it would be portrayed,in the end i thought it was finely balanced & was great to see someone i know well at the end John Belchem who was possibly presenter David Olusoga's teacher at Uni.
Weird how the house & this area has gone full circle.

See I wondered if because Olusoga studied history at the University of Liverpool he may have already been familiar with the house, in addition to local history which may have made it simpler. A lot of the records he used like census, newspapers and death records are  available for most (amateur) genealogists. I've even seen some of the Gore's directories (or their equivalent) on Google Books. The level of synthesis for it though is remarkable in order to bring back the lives of the people in a way that isn't overly speculative
