Had a listen to this when it came out.  Really, really enjoyed it and as usual moved on and forgot completely about it.  That dudes drumming is amazing and that bass player is beautiful.  Only thing hotter than an great lady drummer, is a silky smooth lady bass player - she has serious skills. The really mesh all the stuff they're into well - even when it gets pastiche-y.

I'd better go and buy Now 99 and the new Noel Gallagher album then  ;D :'(

Jesus I'm old. I remember being really excited to get Now 4 or 3 for a birthday or Christmas! When I was 13, U2's 'Under a Blood Red Sky and War were my two albums (and they virtually were my only LP's, + Complete Madness, Michael Jackson's Off The Wall and Not Nine Oclock News 'Hedgehog Sandwich'. Still have the U2 cassettes, but I caned them on a daily basis almost. Can't say I listen to U2 that much these days!

Hellova lot of points raised above... don't know where to start! So some random outbursts...

Yes I want a bike.
Delighted for KEXP
I love some new albums as much as my old faves.
Not sure what suspend disbelief in order to enjoy it means (?!)
'Do I love the sound of old music above all else?' I think I love the sound of new music even more. When it hits a spot I mean, and maybe that's what they really mean when people talk lovingly about their youth when it comes to music - maybe they miss the buzz of hearing something new and magical. Then again, you come across a band for the first time like 'Death' and yes, it reminds you of a sound you love, but it was still very new to everyone. Or hearing Ngozi Family from the same period from Zambia for the first time very recently. My original answer was just 'No', but went waffling.
Sonic Youth - 10 years before a good one!?
'Modern gear makes everything too easy.' Don't agree with that at all.
I'm not anchored to music of my youth.
That Las Ketchup song is brilliant. I remember it getting popped up on here by Chopper I think or was it you FB?
Not sure I have a 'loyalty' as such to a band.
I have listened to The Smiths regularly for 30 years and his comments of the last god knows how long haven't affected my listening to The Smiths one jot. I have never listened to a solo Morrisey LP in full.

New book on Can finally out and able to pre-order. They said April 5th originally but not sure why the delay. Had set my alarm and spent 2/3 hours across two mornings trying to work out how to bloody pre-order it! Will find a moment to start again but not there yet ;D Shame Memorial Device by David Keenan is sold out. Has anyone read that?

Shared a flat with a mate who was also a big Smiths fan, but he went that extra yard and actually went out and bought a fucking Morrisey LP. Maybe it was his 2nd LP - can't quite remember - big Mozzer face, blue, yellow text at the top if I remember. Arsed.

Seen as there's a few Bill Callahan shouts, here's a shameless plug for an ambient mix I did recently featuring him a hazy dub style.

https://soundcloud.com/brian-mclaughlin-26/ambient-scouse-part-ii

Tracklist:

Brian Eno and David Byrne - Solo Guitar With Tin Foil
Simon Peter - Arc of Lark
Swan and The Lake - Waiting For Spring
Ashra - Oasis
Seahawks - Didn't Know I Was Lost (Land Of Shadows Dancing Mix)

Smith and Mudd - Dogwood
Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois - Weightless
Mushrooms Project - Rio Disco '84
Jose Padilla - Remember Me
David Darling - Cello Blue

Sonic Youth - 10 years before a good one!?

'Modern gear makes everything too easy.' Don't agree with that at all.

Sonic Youth - 10 years before a good one!?

Ahhhh - knew you'd kick my arse for that one.  :)

Didn't say good one - said masterpiece, they're all different shades of amazing! But yeah, Sister is 7 years in?  That's the when they went on an almost to end of career run (Discounting NYC Ghosts + Flowers obvs) of just about every album being incredible.  But also I'm full of shit - EVOL is insanely good, and Bad Moon Rising has nearly my favourite Sonic Youth song on it. And it's really unfair on the debut one.

But Sister - from the harmonic breakdown in Schizophrenia when Kim starts singing, then those Steve Shelley toms kicking in for the build back up.  That whole album just fucking sings.

Anyway 10 years is way off - but 5 is maybe more accurate and unfair on 2 of my favourite albums ever.

'Modern gear makes everything too easy.' Don't agree with that at all.

Yeah you're right of course too.  I was making a sweeping generalisation. Maybe I meant makes it too easy to make bad music.  Also I was talking exclusively about recording here, not the creative part.  And wasn't having a go at bedroom music, just the amount of bad, homogenised crap there is around now.   Wanna sound like Oasis - I got a patch for that.  Wanna sound like Mumford - I got a patch for that.  Wanna sound like Beyonce - I got a patch, autotune and CGI talent patch for that.

Incidentally - did anyone watch the Beyonce Coachella gig at the weekend? Completely forgot to wax about it with all the other discussion we have going on. I got up at 7 am for it - holy fuck it was amazing.  She had like a 50 piece brass band (like the US school band type thing, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble type thing) backing her up.  And like 100 dancers, a Destiny's Child reunion and a Solange dance off.  Whatever you think about her it was one of the best things I've ever seen.  My little girl has been talking about her non stop all week, making up songs about her and stuff.

My local record shop has Iguana Death Cult and Black Tarantula playing tomorrow. It is also selling Leffe.

The first time I saw IDC was a record store appearance. I was raving about them so much that my mates booked them for a gig without bothering to listen to them. Boss band, very much in Thee Oh Sees style.

Filler., Djozer (coz I reckon you like a bit of noise), and Alonso if you're lurking - the new Sleep album is out there.  First new music in 20 years or something.  First listen is it's amazing - cleaned themselves up a little bit but still absolute filth. Got a really long train journey now to learn the lyrics off by heart.

PS - Filler. I know you've heard some of it... Spotify stalking is the only reason I was alerted to it.  *waving, slightly sinister, peeping Tom emoji guy*

I have nothing other than stoner and doom metal to sell today, dude. I only say nerd because most metallers worth their salt don't like either genre - only pretenders like me.

Also 18th July has the potential to work - pity it's only a couple of days after the world cup ends.

Ha ;D I listened to it today yes (3/4 of it). Never heard of them before but came across them thru reading about SeaChange fest, which I fancied going to last year I think - the one where Richard Dawson was playing at anyway. Was intruiged at the morse code etching on their vinyl at first, which got messy trying to work out wtf was written on there - probably 'sleep' is as far as I got with it. Also looked like a straight split down the middle of a two coloured vinyl? So gave it a whirl. Great beginning - did a few of those metally bits which always puts me off a bit, but then started growing on me again before I had to click pause. Very smartly dressed band too going by their pic ;D Needs another full listen - sounded good in the sunshine!

Didn't know anything about him, but got pinged it on my phone from the Grauniad. Very rare for the Guardian to alert you to the news that a DJ has died, yet alone one aged 28. Very sad news... more sad news.

Ta for the heads up, I'll give it a listen. I'm pretty sure I'm no metaller, but I like a bit of heavy at times.

"Nerdcore" maybe? Do the powers that be still use the suffix "-core" to create new and exciting genres? Reminds me of going to see a band called Horse the Band about 10 years ago, who may or may not still be going and may or may not have been the only purveyors of "Nintendocore," a sort of metally mathrocky hardcore type thing with keyboard bleeps that made it sound a little bit like Tetris. Really didn't like the idea of them at all, but my housemate was desperate to see them and dragged me along after plying me with drink and pills and I ended up having a rather jolly good time of it all. They were supported by Rolo Tomassi, who I think have made it fairly big in the last few years. Remember staring at their (rather beautiful) singer in my drug and drink-induced stupor for what seemed like about half a lifetime, utterly entranced and convinced I was going to marry her. Never even spoke to her, obviously. Oh to be young again.

One of my wife's best friends from school went out with one half of Team Doyobi for a while. Supported Autechre in an early tour of theirs. She's one of my best friends too as she came to ATP with us and had a wonderful time. We don't see her enough. I think they were labelled as nintendocore or something. Magnificent band.

Do check out Child Pornography's masterpiece, 'The Beatles' if you can. Bastard child of said genre.

Absolute banger released last month.

' In a German, in a Geeermaan'

'They think we making peas, we be making R's, they thinking we catching bus, we drivin cars'

'In a German, in a Germaaaan'

There's been a lot of tracks on GRM Daily that have been banging, but this one is in my top 5 of 2018 thus far.

Fair enough, I know everyone has different genres.

Like I don't really like Rock music or Heavy Metal (sorry Jürgen)

But you have to admit this track is pretty catchy though? Definitely one to remember,  positive or negative.

I've heard many songs and completely forgot them.

It's not even 10am yet, and I've listened to this about 10 times.

A great new song from Courtney Barnett.

And RAWK's (Flashing Blade in particular) favourite misanthrope Father John Misty also has a couple of new ones out with some great titles, "Disappointing diamonds are the rarest of them all" and "Just dumb enough to try". ;D

The album is called "God's favourite customer" and the song titles on it read like a spoof. ;D
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

The Haley Hendryayyyxxyx 'Oom Sha La La' has been the best summer tune for me so far I think. Am hoping my son will give me the heads up on the new big summer sounds - he introduced me to some good stuff last year (and some absolute fucking shite) but all he and his friends have been singing these past few weeks are songs about Salah. All versions. Had his 8th birthday party today, and my son was nearly in tears waiting for it - 4 or 5 going insane for it in a 25 crowd at the end god love them. So looks like I'll have to find one or two on here :)

Enjoyed Lonker Lee's One Eye Sees Red LP. From Poland. 3/4 piece? 3 songs, 18,17,5m roughly. First track was just what I bloody needed lying on the bed, eyes closed after we got back at 6. I was the ref. Nearly scored with a great Naby run from deep late on. Dreadful finish. One child nearly started crying after I out-debated him on it. Fun weekend all round. What was the West Brom score? ;)

Think I need to get the 'party speakers' out to enjoy Sleep properly. You do need volume with it. It's a genre I know little about - 'stoner - rock', but what I liked about reading about Sleep the other day was they seem to be such huge champions of getting very fucking stoned and plugging instruments into speakers and making a very loud noise, and fair fucks. Love the no bones about it - just don't come round here smoking my stash doing all that twiddly guitar bollocks or you'll be out on your ear!

I think I was traumatised by Europe, Bon Jovi et al and just this constant hideous american soft metal shite pouring into my ears day after fucking day as a kid. I always have to turn the volume down when it starts up. I'm not going to ever air-guitar these moments in a song let's say.

Does anyone have a pre-game song this year? I sometimes have one, but not this. Maybe The Ex.

classic!!

amongst the reggae and dub, Ive been playing a lot of Cumbia ( a style of latino Columbian music) which is perfect for the summer...it appears in the very early Nineites I was into a bit of ..er!..Columbian. Havent a clue why but I have three Cumbia compliaitons I bought around then and they are fucling ace!

Off to Concerto and toying with what to get UMO, Hookworms ( been meaning to get for weeks) or the debut from Sunflower Beam which from the singles sounds Rumours era Fleetwood Mac...maybe a summer sound!...or just buy more reggae and dub!

Amsterdam Trip

Any progress on negotiations for those under the th...sorry, in caring loving realtionships?

Cloggypops come up with a few suggestions already. Im flexible up to a point on dates but as suggested I think you UK based guys need some planning due to costs and commitments.

Next week or so I will ask if there is any prefreable periods for the trip. Iver suggested September but thats too be seen ( there is an Undertones gig if you fancy a nostalgia fest!)

As said before I think we need a decent size of group to make it work, as most dont know each other a large group will help that 'awkwardness'..which would be diffcult in a smallish group of 3 or 4...so I think we need around min 5/ 6 plus the Dutch based guys.

All thoughts welcome!

any current new 'summer'  tunes to recommend...cos with this weather, sorry its on Reggae and Dub for me.

It's spring! Since two years back my new favorite spring album is Breakfast by Teleman. Brilliant Sanity is not half bad either. They just have this inherent liberating feel to them.

What has the universe got to do with it? You're here in Brooklyn! Brooklyn is not expanding!

I haven't mentioned the trip again yet. I will do, but I'm still thawing out. Got to get a new passport on Wednesday - emergency job, so at least I'll have that sorted! Are they Parisian Blue yet?

I'm in the 'more the merrier' camp too, but I doubt there would be any ice to break if only 2 or 3. We'll all be basking in a Naby Keita as a 6 glow by then ;)

Speaking of destroying all-comers - the Sleep at high volume is highly recomended. YOU DON@T EVEN NOTICE THE TWIDDLY BITS WHEN YOU HEAR IT THAT LOUD!

Definitely needs to be listened to as loud as possible.  The whole thing about Doom/Stoner Metal is the slower pace at which it's played (owing loads to Sabbath) - and then all the low end tones, you get this beautiful fuzzed out spectrum of of crunch and sunstained notes.  Then there's just the grooviness of it. Helps if you've just hit a bong too.

The druggyness of Sleep is a real thing.  They recorded 2 pretty amazing and popular albums in the early 90s and then were given this massive advance to record the 3rd one.  They spent it all on weed and then spent 3 or 4 years in the studio writing this big 1 hour long tune.  When they eventually handed it in the record execs hit the roof, sued the band all types of stuff.  Eventually the company chopped up the album into 6 songs and released the album as that - called it Jerusalem.  It took 5 years or something for the band to get it released as one piece and that's the album Dopesmoker - which is a stone cold psych/metal/whatever classic. Saw them do it live in Portland on my honeymoon.  Serious players.

Big fan of the spin off bands, High On Fire and Om too. Seriously influential lads - metal for lads like me, (Melvins, Earth included etc) who like saying they like metal but really just like weed, noise, loudness and nodding their heads in the dark.

Oh and I think I'm good to go for Hamsterdam. But may only get permission for the one night. That might be for the best too....

Sued the band - brilliant ;D Must give Dopesmoker a go. I used to listen to High On Fire's 10,000 Years tune quite a bit, and Sleep has an ex-member of High On Fire? There's no getting away from the need for volume tho.

Apparantly it's a 20 year anniversary of Sonic Youth's 'A Thousand Leaves'. Have always enjoyed that album, but Pitchfork gave it a 0.0?

Yeah the guitarist is the main dude in High On Fire.

Here's the lyrics of Dopesmoker btw.

Drop out of life with bong in hand
Follow the smoke toward the riff filled land
Drop out of life with bong in hand
Follow the smoke toward the riff filled land

Proceeds the weedian - Nazareth
Proceeds the weedian - Nazareth

Creedsmen roll out across the dying dawn
Sacred Israel holy mountain Zion
Sun beams down on to the sandsea reigns
Caravan migrates through deep sandscape

Lungsmen unearth the creed of Hasheeshian
Procession of the weed-priests to cross the sands
Desert legion smoke-covenant is complete
Herb bails retied on to backs of beasts
Arise arise arise - The Son of the God of Israel
Jordan river flows on evermore
Bathe in glow of sunlight’s beating rays
They feel the serpent's standard rule our days

Stoner caravan emerge from sandsea
Earthling inserts to chalice the green cutchie
Groundation soul finds trust upon smoking hose
Assembled creedsmen rises prayer-filled smoke
Raise up seer’s holy prophecy
Plants down on upon years of the sun now feeds
Seed of Eden fall on nurtured soil
Onward caravan prepare new bong

Weed-priests creedsman chant the right
Judgement soon come to Mankind
Green herbsmen serve rightful king
Hemp seed caravan carries

The molten fire flowed up toward Zion
Flight of the nazarene to seek the cheribum
Rides out believer with the spliff aflame
Marijuanaut escapes earth to cultivate

Grow-room is church temple of the new stoner breed
Chants loud-robed priest down on to the freedom seed
Burnt offering redeems – completes smoked deliverance
Caravan’s stoned deliverance
The caravan holds to eastern creed - Now smokes believer!
The chronicle of the sinsemillian

Drop out of life with bong in hand
Follow the smoke toward the riff-filled land
Drop out of life with bong in hand
Follow the smoke - Jerusalem

I can't find the Sonic Youth review on Pitchfork.  That album is really underrated. Sunday, Hoarfrost, the Allan Ginsberg tune.  Love all that stuff.

Listening devices, band loyalty and, of course, a trip to the ‘dam! I’ve missed it all, it seems.

Seriously, a big thanks to you guys for the profound well wishes. Sorry I didn’t get to all the PM messages. Been trying to respond as much I can but it’s been quite difficult and I imagine it will continue to be for some time.

I’ll throw my hat into the ring for Amsterdam. In the mode of rewind and the posts on the previous pages have provided good banter indeed. Chip, you played it like a fiddle, sir.

Sam – if you require somebody to stealthy extract you from the mitts of your good lady, in principle, I hereby offer my services. Shall we just say you’re just off on a boozy weekend across the water to West Kirby? :D

Again, backtracking, but there seems to be some really good stuff been released. Newies from Anna von Hausswolff, Lowtide, Manic Street Preachers, Hot Snakes, Daniel Avery, The Men and Josh T Pearson.

Can’t wait to hit up the new Sleep. Speaking of riffs, I’m actually off to Wrong Fest this weekend. First time seeing Hey Colossus and Gnod. Should be decent.

Once again, thank you for the support, guys. It means a lot.

Amsterdam Bulletin!

First and foremost welcome back Alonso!

Decided to post this to try and pull together people’s views and start planning.

We need a consensus on what suits most so some compromise will be required, but  let’s keep it relaxed.  Think most would like there to be some music focus around the trip but a lot will depend on when it is and let’s hope the Gig Gods are kind to us. We could focus on what gigs are about to influence date, but I suggest that’s easier said than done, so I propose we find the period what works most for a visit (so everyone can factor in their own existing personal commitments and not least cost implications.)

If anyone has tried to organise meetings with a disparate group you will appreciate its like trying to corral cats…best thing is to lead on it, so here goes.

Below is a list of months, rate the ones suit you in order i.e. 1 first choice, 2 second choice etc and an X if not doable. From this I will draw up the most suitable month then we can drill down to when and see what’s happening on those dates…if those nothing that suits we will pick something wild and wacky, there’s always some music going on.

Ok so I will leave this for a couple of weeks for those interested to respond.

I will start of with mine, just copy and paste and insert your favoured period. You can post on the thread or pm me.

Hope this works for you guys:

Q1. Which is your preferred month

May -  X
June - 5
July - 3
August - X
September - 1
October - 2
November - 4

Q2 Do you prefer (yes or no)

1.   Weekend trip - Yes
2.   During week - Yes
