Gin & Tonic with a slice of grapefruit, rather than the more traditional lemon or lime is lovely.

Also love a Brockmans and Ginger Ale, which doesn't like it would work at all but is amazing.

I might need to branch out and try some other garnishes. I'm a simple man and usually stick to lime or lemon.

Have to say I can't be doing with any cucumber garnish. Tried that a few times and not my favourite.

Yeah tried cucumber once and it was good in a novel kind of way but went off it before I finished the glass.

Navy Proof sounds interesting.

Yeah, there are few Navy Proof Gins out there

As the name hints, navy strength gin is a powerfully alcoholic expression of the juniper-informed spirit, typically clocking in at 57 percent alcohol by volume. (Regular London dry style gin typically ranges between 40 percent and 45 percent.)

“Navy strength” is a relatively new term. It was coined by the branding consultant John Murphy on behalf of Plymouth Gin in 1993 for something very old — what used to be called 100º UK proof spirit. It refers to a spirit that is bottled at exactly 57% alcohol by volume

Been reading about the Tarquin's Seadog and although a Navy Proof Gin, it doesn't really taste any stronger than a London Dry.  Apparently a lovely Gin by all accounts that you need to be careful with :)

Cheapest bottle I can find is £40 so its going to be my Xmas treat

Tried some strong (70%+) gins at the Gin Festival, and whilst they're nice I think the alcohol can overpower some of the botanicals so you get less of the flavour coming through.

Yeah Craig, 70%+ is starting to get a bit silly and I can only see the flavour being distorted.

I wouldn't really be tempted by a Navy Proof but as I have said, the reviews on the Tarquin's are exceptional and the enhanced volume doesn't effect the experience.  So I'm in :)

Think I'm going to try a bottle of Botanist too as that seems to be a favourite in this thread at least and I trust RAWK explicitly (except Crosby Nick, 24/7, Chopper and many many others)

The missus and me are currently into Sharish Blue Magic gin, from Portugal. We drink it with fever tree.

When you add in the tonic water it turns from blue to pink which makes it fun to serve to guests

I too have joined the gin revolution. Probably on the back of a few visits to Madrid where they've gone for it in a big way. Bars give you a menu of all the gins and a menu of all the available tonics & mixers. The list seems endless for both.

Current gin choices. When I'm home, Hepple Gin from the Northumberland moors around the Cheviots. Time was it was only available locally, but I notice they're rolling it out to a good few swanky London bars now (it's a craft gin don't you know)

When I'm on holiday it's Gin Mare. It's like the Mediterranean in a bottle (good slogan, I should patent it)

Some great shouts in here.

The Tarquins is great - had the blue one which is flavoured with orange, but I'll look for the red one.
Always make Damson Gin - also use the Aldi own too, as others have said its good for the price and why pay more when you're lobbing a load of sugar and damsons in. After 3 months in a jar in the cupboard you can't go wrong.
Jenevers is a good call too - tried the Crosby gin in there which was OK, and have been experimenting with slices of chilli in gin at home, worth doing if you enjoy a bit of heat.

Current favourite is Tanqueray Rangpur. If you a hint of lime in your gin this one is great.

And we also have our Spanish friends to thank for our Gins being served in the 'Copa De Balon' (or Big goldfish bowl glass :))

Lots of reasons to use these glasses with your G&T but the main reason is to keep the ice from defrosting longer.  Chefs in Spanish restaurants starting drinking their G&T's in big red wine glasses to keep their drink cooler and less diluted in a hot kitchen environment.

Brewdog have launched a Gin called Lonewolf and it is superb

LoneWolf Gin is purity personified. A twenty-first century taste sensation.

Juniper berries form the perfect backbone of this gin. And lemongrass and Kaffir lime leaf add character. A zest-filled start gives way to delicate spice notes from the coriander, pink peppercorns and mace: a perfect complement to the citrus fruits. Lavender provides a delicate floral sweeteness and Scots pine needles help to embed the juniper.

I've still got two bottles of Hendricks that I've not opened yet. Might get stuck into one tomorrow night as the wife and I are having a rare toddler-free Saturday night.

Now I know Hendricks is one of those that is recommended to be garnished with cucumber but anyone got any recommendations for something else to try as I'm just not a fan of it?

I’m not a fan of it with cucumber either, in fact not a massive fan of Hendricks anyway, but it’s not too bad with something a little sweeter.

Moved cities recently and there's a thriving gin scene here with some great local distilleries as well as some great gin bars.

36S blood orange gin is great with a bit of blood orange and mint. - https://www.36short.com.au/products/blood-orange-gin

In fact, blood orange and grapefruit are my current gotos for a good G&T. All made with sugar free tonic of course which helps reduce the sweetness and allows for more of the citrus to express itself.

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

Interesting that no-one has mentioned Plymouth Navy Strength, supplier to the Royal Navy for 200 years and the original gin associated with the term 'navy strength'. The Sloe version is tasty too, if you like a bit of adventure.

I'm very fond of it, as was my father, a devoted gin aficionado.

My brother has a bit of a thing for gin at the minute. I was going to send him on a gin tour of some description for a christmas gift but can’t any more so I’m now in need of a second idea. Anybody got any suggestions? Because I don’t know the first thing about gin and am stumped now the original plan is off the table. I would ideally like something a bit more ‘gifty’ than here’s a bottle of whatever but I would be okay with doing that if it were a bottle of something special. I just don’t know what would be.

As Craig says, a good bottle of Gin with a nice branded Copa de Balon glass is a great gift.

I also reccomend the Fever-tree tasting selection gift set.  4 x different 50ml gin minitures and 4 x 200ml bottles of Fevertree. (also all differnet tonic flavours)

I've been given this set a few times now and always enjoyed it :)

Anyone tried adding a splash of cointreau to a gin and tonic?

There's lots of orange flavoured gins around and I've just bought some blood orange cointreau and reckon just a tiny dash with an orange based gin could be pretty good. Been on wagon for a couple of weeks so not tried yet myself but wondered if anyone else had given it a go?

Not Cointreau but I like a few dashes of Angostora Bitters. Tried some Fee Brothers orange bitters a while back, nice but prefer the Angostora. They do an orange one too but not tried that one.

At the weekend I was drinking Jawbox gin with honeycomb and ginger ale which is the Jawbox serving suggestion. I wasn't fussed on the ginger ale but switched to tonic and it was fantastic. Very easy to drink.
