No trains will run in or out of Liverpool Lime Street station "for several days" after a wall collapsed on to the railway.

A section of trackside wall "loaded with concrete and cabins by a third party" fell, blocking all four lines into the station, Network Rail said.

The collapse on Tuesday evening left rubble strewn across the tracks and overhead wires damaged.

Commuters and travellers are being urged to seek alternative routes.

All services from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester, Warrington and Wigan are suspended, although some replacement buses are in operation.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "An extensive clear-up needs to take place to make the location safe before repairs to the overhead wires can be undertaken.

"Early indications suggest train services will not resume for several days while extensive clear-up and repairs take place to make the location safe."

Engineers will make a detailed assessment of the damage later, but have indicated the line may not re-open until Monday 6 March.

Liverpool Lime Street is the main station serving the city centre.

Try 10A bus to/from Queen Square be just as quick as any rail replacement buses, 10A is a QBP as well that operator only day tickets ecc can be used on either Stagecoach or Arriva.

That's just the normal service where you change at Hunts Cross.
I think most main line services will terminate at South Parkway, unfortunately Virgin seem to be saying Runcorn for now.

Virgin said extra 40min from London, but no response to my suggestion that on Saturday they run most of the buses to anfield rather than lime street.

It would really depend on what line you're coming into the city on, plus they should have rail replacement buses on from the last station through to lime street. They had them today running between Liverpool South Parkway and Lime Street.

Thankfully as its a 5.30pm kick off you'll still be sound for making kick off.

Trains are only operating Wigan-Huyton, so you have to change at Wigan not Preston & they're hourly, Preston-Liverpool trains are cancelled, or Catch the Ormskirk train at Preston then Merseyrail from Ormskirk. https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/news/travel-alerts/1087-liverpool-lime-street-station-closed

One coach an hour is that or do you think/know if there'll be a convoy every hour? Could be tricky getting 11 full Virgin coaches onto a 53-seater...

From past experience there have been a few coaches for passengers to get on. Not 11 but 3 or 4. Don't be surprised if they start sending out e-mails or recommending people don't travel like they do during engineering works at weekends.

I've tweeted Virgin when I saw the timetable and questioned what they are going to do for people booked on the 19:48 back to Euston after the game who'll be stranded as the last rail replacement leaves Liverpool at 7pm for the 8:03 train from Runcorn. I know a few others have as well, feel free to do likewise.

They've also said they'd offer passengers refunds if they don't want to travel but no mechanism to do so is available as of yet.

Virgin's tweeted response "There should be more than enough buses conveying passengers"

I hope so don't fancy an hour wait in Runcorn in additional to the extra 45min journey time

possible but the midland train is usually packed solid from Crewe on matchdays and that's with the virgin trains running. £32 from Runcorn to Anfield in a cab might be the best option if Virgin fuck up the buses.

How on earth do you make the 19:48 after a 5:30 kick-off.

The quickest I've managed to get to Lime Street is 35mins after the whistle! Normally longer as I'm a regular in the Anfield Road end with the kids.

I've run it before. Normally I just cut down the side streets at the final whistle towards Everton Sports centre and get a cab to Lime St.

It's doable if on your own. But you're relying on there being very little injury time in either half, if staying virtually until the end.

The Preston - Lime Street train is cancelled, I think because the train has nowhere to dock at the end, like it can't wait around at Huyton. Preston - Ormskirk - Liverpool central is your best option if that's where you're coming from

Bus replacements Liverpool - Huyton is what National rail told me

Found this:

Northern are advising customers not to travel in the Liverpool and Merseyside region unless absolutely necessary.

A very limited number of services will run between:

Wigan North Western and Huyton. One train each hour will run in each direction; departing Wigan North Western at 31 minutes past each hour and departing Huyton at 15 minutes past each hour.
Manchester Victoria and Huyton. One train each hour will run in each direction; departing Manchester Victoria at 02 minutes past each hour and departing Huyton at 07:53, then at 55 minutes past each hour.
Manchester Oxford Road and Edge Hill

Northern customers may use their tickets on:

Merseyrail services between Ormskirk / Kirkby / Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Central
Metrolink between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria
TransPennine Express services on any reasonable route between Liverpool and Manchester
Virgin Trains between Preston and Wigan North Western

Going via Ormskirk still only take around an hour. I'd say that is your best bet.

From Chester he should take Merseyrail to Birkenhead Central and then the replacement bus to Moorfields/Lime Street. (Remember no trains across the river on weekends until May). This defo quicker than the Arriva train to Earlstown, changing for the hourly train to Huyton, and then a bus.

From Huyton, there's a rail replacement bus to take you to Lime St I think.
