People forget the Hawkwind days. Silver Machine was a cracking tune!! Was seriously thinking of goi g to Download this year - think it'll be a bit of a tribute event which will be even more worthwhile going to.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/RcNKKbRz1mM" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/RcNKKbRz1mM</a>

Quote
Released in May 1973, Space Ritual is a unique piece of British music history. Across its 88 minutes, it delivers one of the most mind-bending, trance-inducing and flat-out immersive experiences available for your ears and brain. It’s one hell of a trip and certainly the finest heavy psychedelic album produced in this country. Yet for all its influence on generations of star-faring mantric music makers that have followed in its wake, it still remains an under-acknowledged record in the great rock canon.

Of course, this isn’t just an issue for Space Ritual, but also for Hawkwind as a band. Yes, everybody knows the name and they’re probably familiar with the wheezing space boogie of 'Silver Machine', but Hawkwind suffer in the popular and critical imagination by being pigeon-holed as sci-fi obsessed hippy throwbacks beloved by cheesecloth-wearing stoners in greatcoats. And while there’s certainly some truth in this perception, it obscures the fact that throughout the 1970s, Hawkwind were a musical and conceptual powerhouse with a series of releases that both parallels and rivals the revolutionary rock coming out of Germany during the same period.

Tellingly, Hawkwind were one of the few UK bands actively listening to and being influenced by the likes of Can, Neu! and Amon Düül II, which perhaps explains why their output sounds so singular when compared with the contemporary British music scene of the time – with a similar year zero, anything goes mentality to the key German bands, Hawkwind took the heavier end of the 60s underground sound as a starting point and created a monolithic concoction of garage rock, primitive electronics and free jazz, with the power of repetition and the riff always to the fore.

Space Ritual is the absolute epitome of this sound, a raging black slab of proto-punk blazing a trail through the vastness of the cosmos, the sheer exhilaration of its musical brute force counter-balanced lyrically by an unsentimental vision of our place in the universe. Experimental but never inaccessible, dense as hell but never dumb, Space Ritual still sounds like nothing else on Earth.

It’s also worth noting that this album wasn’t a niche concern in 1973. It got to number nine in the UK charts (Hawkwind’s only top ten LP), and was culled from a series of shows that really pushed the boundaries of what live rock music could be in terms of an audio-visual event. 'Silver Machine' might appear in retrospect to be some kind of fluky hit from the previous year, but as Lemmy says in Carol Clerk’s Saga of Hawkwind biog, “…in the freak scene, we were fucking huge”. And the success of the single was what enabled to Hawkwind to finance these ground-breaking shows.

The BBC did a great documentary on the mad twat, well worth a look.
When he was showing off his Panzer tank and other WW2 memorabilia.

Great doc, they will probably repeat that on the iplayer soon.

Music has lost one hell of a personality.  I would say rest in peace but rock on you mad bastard!

Really sad news, can only imagine the crowds his funeral will attract given Lemmy and his band's influence and following over the years.

Sad to hear of Lemmy's passing.
"Icon" is a word perhaps thrown around too easily-Lemmy fits it like a glove. I said that as someone who was not much of a fan of Motörhead, though I stepped aboard his Silver Machine with great pleasure 40 years and more ago.
Then, of course, came the day I spent shooting the "Hellraiser" video with him in an abandoned theatre in downtown LA. It was a memorable day in many ways, not least for the time spent sitting across a card table from him, waiting to shoot the scene. I sipped water while he drank whiskey at an alarming rate, we swapped memories of The Goons and Spike Milligan and laughed a lot together. In spite of the liquor and the god-knows-what-else, a gentle, charming, funny man.

Lemmy was a legend - used to see him at Finches on the Portobello road, drinking Jack Daniels and playing the one armed bandit. Philthy (Animal) Taylor only died last month as well. Made me deaf after a Motorhead gig at the Marquee - ears ringing for days. Acted like a nutter but was a nice guy. RIP.

I learnt something today. Lemmy was always a force to be reckoned with, and a voice to listen to - we all loved his interviews etc because he was THE hedonist icon, but listening to Motorhead this morning, but more particular, Hawkwind - a band I had TDK's of etc when younger, but he was fucking great on bass. I mean he really was very very good. Never a big Motorhead fan -I enjoyed listening to them - but was never a Motorhead fan so to speak, but he really did things on bass. Very cultured. Britain's a different place without Lemmy.

Lemmy and Motörhead are responsible for my love of live music . Saw them on 21st March 82 at The Deeside Leisure Centre, it made a big impression on me and my ears , hence I still go to gigs now and was due to see them at Download again this year.  Can't say rest in peace as peace he won't want , so hope he's playing his bass in the sky with the other passed rock legends

See he's funeral is being live streamed on youtube. He'd no doubt piss himself laughing at that. No messing with this fella, proper lad, what you seen was what you got, the genuine article.

I can't remember what documentary it's in. There's been a few. But he tells a story in one that still makes me laugh...
He got off the Hawkwind tour bus somewhere in Canada. He was taking a few pictures, dressed in them up the crack denim cut-offs and mad hippy clogs of the 70's. Someone twatted him on the head. When he woke up the bus, and everything else, was gone.

The band were all acid and pot, peace and love, hippy types. When the speed freak plonky got knocked out, they drove off sharpish, leaving him in some motorway services with fuck all but the cut-offs and clogs. But he hitched to the border, somehow blagged his way through into the states and caught up with them - on stage, playing a gig, with someone fella he'd never seen before playing his bass. So, Lemmy charged through the gaff, roaring and screaming, jumped on stage, done fella in and weighed into all of them with his bass.

Wish I could be there on Saturday...

I always love the story Slash from G'n'R used to tell.  Saw him tell the story to an interviewer on telly late one night.

Apparently Slash was in some bar in LA with a super hot chick (as you would imagine) on his arm.  Slash nips to the bar and immediately some long haired crazy looking dude starts hitting on Slash's squeeze.

Guy at the bar says - hey Slash arent you gonna sort that guy out?

Slash responds with a massive smile of admiration "No fucking way man, that's fucking Lemmy!!"

:)

Edit:

Actually my version of the story wasn't entirely correct but its still close  :)

Watched a 30 minute BBC programme on Lemmy last night. "Lemmy in his own words"

Asked about his influences he named artists such as  Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Gerry Lee Lewis, The Shadows and surprisingly Cliff Richard.

"Oh yeah, Cliff Richard was good back in the early days, he was menacing"

Pause

".... He's crap now like"

RIP Eddie and thank you.
Always loved seeing interviews with him in his later years, he talked with such honesty and humour, every second word was fuck.
Motorhead are actually on the rerun of TOTP 81 tonight on BBC4.
I'm going to play 'Dead men tell no Tales' now. So many classic tracks to choose from.
