Loads were pissed off about the London Olympics, with all the austerity stuff going on at the same time. Then on the whole, the country loved it and (I think I'm right in saying) got a significant psychological boost. I bet Brazil will too (although I get that their problems are more extreme)

Great to see how welcoming this art is. Amazing stuff.

The poverty line between England countries like Brazil are completely incomparable. I loved the Olympics despite seeing it as a waste of our country's money, but I haven't really seen any longstanding positive impact of the games on the country, or even the immediate Tower Hamlets community.

VICE had a very interesting short documentary a few months back which was showing how the Government/Police were trying to take control of some favelas (i.e. the ones near tourist/football areas), but it was making conditions and crime in others much, much worse.

If Brazil go out early, is it likely to make things kick-off?

Wasn't sure where to put this. It's the Cantona documentary on Socrates and Corinthians and the democracy movement. Kind of relates to the whole social movement within Brazil which involves football. Not sure how long this will be up, feel free to PM if it does a vanishing act.

It's one thing saying this on RAWK, anonymously. It's quite another thing when the president says it publically almost baiting the protestors though. The fact the very same woman was a protestor back in the 60's herself and was imprisoned as a result means she really should know better than to pass a law making it illegal to protest.

The protests are getting a reduced coverage now but they are still happening, I can confirm that.

Also, as someone said earlier, the "pacification" of the favelas around the world cup areas has just moved the problems on into other areas. I live in an Niteroi and it's mostly middle class retired people in my neighbourhood. Perfect targets for muggers, pick pockets and purse snatchers which we are now seeing lots of. Apparantly violent crime is down everywhere despite me never seeing any violent crime here until the last few months. I rarely see people on the street now after 6pm. The owner of the pizzeria outside my block of apartments was shot in the head and killed a month ago as he was locking up for the night. Two guys rode up on a shitty motorbike, shot him dead, took the nights cash and bolted.

The world cup has been a fucking nightmare for Brazil. I went from living in the safest city in South America with 3rd best quality of life to being afraid to go into the street with my daughter and no longer going out after last light. Well in Dilma you big haired c*nt.

Have to say I'm impressed with the quality. Looks like real art and not the one colour tags crap we get over here.

The London Olympics was pretty ordinary and any benefit was short lived, I can see no evidence that it encouraged successfully young people into sports. My kids mates are all sporty kids and barely watched it as they didn't have any connection with it and let's face it some of the "events" are rubbish and some of the attendences were piss poor.
Feel for the Brazilians as they (as we have) have far more urgent projects needing the funding that has been wasted on a World Cup to satisfy some politicos or other.
Some of the graffiti is inspired, just hope if Brazil get knocked out then it doesn't kick off too badly but they would be justified I think if they did.

Cranio is one of the artists after the tournament is complete that I will still try to locate his work. Very impressed with his style.
