So my and familys first ever Christmas away from Liverpool since we moved to Amsterdam in the summer. Its different here Sinterklaas is the main present giving period and that ended on 5th Dec. It was only then 'Chirstmas' appeared...which is a refreshing change from the Christmas bullying to buy on TV and Shops seems to start in October in UK.
I think Chrismas has taken on a more present giving profile here in the Netherlands over recent years but as far as I can tell its still more about having a nice time, good food etc. Amsterdam looks pretty with its canals lit up and everyone seems to be buying a real tree ( minimal dressing) hundreds sold on street corners and shops everwhere.
There will be things I like about Christmas here and some things I will miss....went shopping yesterday and it was so relaxed , no women carrying 15 Primemark bags screaming at their kids...no drunken mobs on work Christmas do's
How we will 'feel' on Christmas day , dunno , It will be strange not to see my folks/Brother and family ( were popping back to visit them between Christmas and New Year)...but Im not sure how much I 'felt Christmas' anymore anyway...great to see my son enjoy it but build up was becoming more and more intense with buying stuff and being knackered come Christmas Day.
So my first Christmas in Amsterdam I think will be more about having a nice time, nice food, thinking about family....y'know ...like Christmas used to be.
