Read a preview somewhere in which the critic (possibly Sepinwall) said the first 4 episodes are as strong as any seen on the show.  Which says a lot.

a controversial 'still' when (i assume) you haven't seen any of the new series... :P

but great news anyway... just as 'happy valley' ends, another top quality show (alongside BCS) to take its place.

Nothing I've seen has surpassed its first 3 seasons, so it retains the title.

Haven't seen Happy Valley. Won't find me saying a bad word about either of the others as they're both phenomenal. Just think The Americans is a cut above and has a longer track record. If Fargo and BCS can continue to improve through a third season then we can talk.

Mere hours away here. Can't wait.

Been on a bit of a cold war drama binge over the last couple of months. Watched the first series of The Americans - which I really liked - and then Deutschland 83 came on, which I really loved. I wasn't completely sure I was going to continue with The Americans but felt a bit bereft after Deutschland 83 ended. So, tentatively began watching series 2 of The Americans, which I thought in the early episodes upped its original standard somewhat. By the end of series - and what an ending! - I tried to talk myself into having a break and persuade myself that I would begin to watch series 3 in a couple of month's time. I tried. I failed. Watched the opening 4 episodes of series 3 over the weekend. Wow! This literally gets better with every passing episode. The tension, the feeling of jeopardy the two leads find themselves in, the brilliant and jarring juxtaposition between family life and the needs of The Centre. The wonderful ironies - especially the Russians experiencing what contemporary Americans are feeling to this day, as the Afghan war escalates in 1983. Brilliant and very subtly done in my opinion. It's hard not to witness the seeds of America's (the West's) current enemies being sown in the early 80s. Intriguing political subtext throughout.

This also has a wonderful, understated and completely unobvious soundtrack throughout all I've watched so far, as well as a truly memorable opening title sequence and score.

I love everything about this show. But most of all, this shows succeeds or fails on the performances of its two leads. They are pretty remarkable. We are totally immersed in their world. The extent of the disguises, the 'other' characters they must inhabit - beyond their everyday fake ones! - is incredible. You believe them when they are not being who we think they are. We believe them even more when the are just being plain, old Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, boring travel agents. Their characters are truly Matryoshka dolls! My current favourite is the  Clark/Philip dichotomy. Rhys pulls this off incredibly well. I'm at the point where I no longer see Philip when he's being Clark. His relationship with Martha is riven with tension; its duplicitous nature hidden in plain sight. Martha, sympathetic and pitiful in equal measure. Amazing. Gripping. Horrible.

But Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys are at their very best in the scenes in which they are together - intimate or estranged, suspicious or jealous. When they are simply being Philip and Elizabeth. Parents, not only with the everyday and mundane worries about how to raise their kids, achieve work/spy life balance, but also consumed with the fear that their children will discover their secret. Just writing about this makes me want to go and put another episode on!

Hope series 3 continues on the same trajectory as all that has gone before. Excellent.

Liked that, saoirse.

Another quality episode. Can we have a 'Poor Martha' for the first time this season?  Poor Martha. It's so unsettling to see Philip not wearing the 'Clark' wig/glasses when meeting Martha. It doesn't usually bode well.
Alison Wright was tremendous this week. Her accent work is fantastic, for a Sunderland native.
Fascinating/horrifying Philip back story too. Jeez.

Great post, mate, and welcome to the club. Loved your observation on the music of the show which is probably my favorite aspect. I think it's brilliantly employed.

Hope you enjoy the rest of S3. I think it was the best of the bunch which is saying something. S4 is off to a banging start.

For those who have seen the premier last week, Andy Greenwald did a podcast with Joe Weisberg (Creator and showrunner) and Joel Fields (showrunner) last week. Really enjoyed it.

@vork & @Ray K Cheers, lads! Glad I found this thread. Had a brief read through the earlier posts now I'm nearly up to date. Hope to finish series 3 by the weekend, seeing as there is no (real) footy to distract me. I've become a bit obsessed with this show over the past month or so. Indeed, I've done a Breaking Bad on it and binged through it in no time.

I know I said it before, but this just keeps gets better and better and better. I'm telling everyone I know to get on it. But nobody has heard of it! It's worth flying through series 1 just to get to series 2 & 3, which take this programme to a completely new level. A bit like Breaking Bad for me. That really took off during series 2.

Also, during the first few episodes of series 3, there are two incredible scenes that are are up there with some of the best television I've seen, and which are hard to forget once viewed:

Spoiler
1. The hotel room scene in which Yousaf watches on as the murdered Annelise is literally folded away into a suitcase. Shocking. Ergh! I can still hear the breaking of bones. 2. Philip extracting Elizabeth's tooth in the basement with a rusty old wrench. I'm not sure what it signified. I don't know if it was erotic or not. But, fuck me, it exuded some deep, complex meaning. Almost like he was taking her virginity or something. Wow! Beautiful and uncomfortable at the same time. Much like the entire show.

Cheers for the link. That's brilliant. Be interesting to see how this develops during the 4th series. The timeline for the events of 1983 in that article match neatly with the storyline of Deutschland 83. Also be interesting to see how this is handled and how the two shows differ. To be fair, the two shows have a completely different register and tone. The Americans is far darker and the web of relationships and allegiances are far more complex and more richly observed. Deutschland 83 has a lighter touch and is far more openly satirical. Both have incredible soundtracks, though. Interesting companion pieces.

Oh and Frank Langella is fucking ace. What great casting.

Was looking for a new (to me) series to delve into before I start to watch Broen/Bron season 3.

Judging by the comments on here it looks like a winner

And yes, Frank Langella is brilliant. I could watch 13 episodes of just him and Margo Martindale drinking tea.

I'm really surprised this show isn't more mainstream. I'm just sitting here recalling and that scene with the Black South African dropping a tyre on the White South African and lighting it without a hint of remorse was quite frankly next level stuff.

Even Denzel's older movies did not push the boundaries that much.

Really hurts it that it's not on Netflix. Think people would be far more willing to catch up if all the previous seasons were sitting there on Netflix to binge. Amazon Prime just doesn't have the same reach.

How many more seasons do you think they've got scheduled? If they don't insist on dragging it it could really go down as one of the All-time greats. Unfortunately, with so much competition I doubt FX has that much leeway.

even more bizarre is the fact that it was on ITV in the UK, alongside a schedule brimful of crap.

i remember reading somewhere that it's almost a statement of intent for FX, and they'll stick with it to the conclusion regardless of ratings etc.

Maybe until Gorbachev, so about two more seasons?

They could go until the start of the fall in 1989, but that is probably too long.

How do people think it will end? Both of them caught, dead, getting away?

They talk about that in the podcast I posted above (right around the 41:00 mark). The head of FX has always said that they'll get at least 5 seasons, so there's some talk that next season might be the last. They've already finished shooting this season and have begun breaking S5, so we'll get at least one more. If I was a betting man I'd put my money on 5, but they mention that they're not sure at this point and they might need a 6th.

That's the main thing. As long as it's the length creators want it to be, not cut short or pushed too long by the Network.

Yeah, it won't be. FX has always been really good at that. Did the same for Justified and Sons of Anarchy, letting them end as the creators envisioned.
