I went to two weddings of match.com couples this year.

I also know several people that have had terrible experiences with online dating (usually with the free sites).

My best bits of advice, based on these two different situations:

-Stick to the more reputable pay sites if you can afford it

-Find out as much as you can about those you interact with/meet from sources outside of the dating website (a simple Google image search in one of the scenarios gone wrong would have revealed mug shots)

-Don't move too quickly into a serious relationship.  It may not be often the case, but there are plenty of people who use these services for cynical purposes, or use them because they have things to hide.

Sound advice that. I'm going to join match dotcom when I've finished all my coursework. Looking at the registration it seems to take about an hour to do it properly. I think I've fashioned up a decent profile on the free ones so will use that and improve on it.

I think I'm going to get the 3 month membership at 60 quid.(scratch that it's an extra 17 quid for 6 months) This should be enough to get me started I think. I agree with not rushing it, that being said hopefully women on there won't be creeped out when I suggest a coffee after a dozen or more messages like they do on the free ones. I just said to a few from POF, wana get a coffee tomorrow and one said 'sorry I don't meet up with strangers' ... This was after about 30 messages  :butt

£60 for 3 months, just to message people who are also willing to pay that much for the possibility of a date? Seems a bit steep.

Anyway, met my fiancée online. Not on a dating site though, but online at first. She's also American and I've just had my visa approved to fly out there and get married, so pretty different situation, but just to say online can work.

I don't have any personal experience with dating sites, but my dad used them a lot, worked out pretty well for him. Not sure if he used paid or free ones, never really felt like asking my dad about his dating life.

You should just randomly poke as many girls on facebook as you can. One will bite, it's law of averages, even if you have to poke over 1000. Seriously tho, I think you're better off using one of the more expensive sites like match etc because if people are going to pay a bit of money they're more likely to be serious about things.

That's the one...

My mate swears by it!

Can't blame him. I've pulled plenty from that one. But honestly, you can't expect to find a proper significant other on there. At least not in the states.

You're far more likely finding a new beak dealer on OKC than anyone befitting anything more than a Jameson drunken shakedown.

;D. Mate of mine, grad student at the time when I was an undergrad student at uni in the states met this cracking bird off match.com. I lived with the lad so I met her a bunch of times and she seemed sound and was quite cute as well like.

Turns out eventually she was a giant con artist, duped him of a couple of grand before she went awol. 'Relationship' went on for around 5 weeks before this happened, my mate was gutted. In the states as Nicky says, be fecking careful. If you're looking for something casual/just to pull its all good but just be careful fellow RAWKites.

Thought I might as well post this in here.. I went speed dating on Saturday and I'd really recommend it.  It was pretty terrifying when the first bell rang, but I got right into it later on and you kind of pick up the knack of what to say and how to manage the 3 minutes.

Also, there were more girls than guys (which apparently is the norm), and the Honey Ratio™ was surprisingly high.

'If we start dating, then we can always tell people we met buying beans in Aldi'. It circumvents the nervousness a lot of people have about the 'online' thing.

It's really stupid that so many people are so anal about this. So much so, that people who use dating sites often feel they will be mortified if their friends find out. The broader society is rather immature about the subject really.

£60 for 3 months are actually not too bad if you break it down....

£60 for 12 weeks
£5 per week

let say if you go out once a week to meet people, £5 would be the entry fee of a night club/a kebab/2 drinks (if you are luck and know where to go)

however, there is no limit of how many people you can chat to and all that per week/month. so overall, it's quite cheap.

compare to there is a chance that you would have to buy them drinks or anything before you get their number or email to keep in touch and you only have until the club/pub close to "work your magic".
It is not impossible, its just improbable

I've used "We met on JDate" when introducing girls whether we've met on MySpace all those years ago, or OKCupid nowdays, and even the I've met in real life, even. Puts a bit of humour on it, and to be fair, you're far more like to meet someone decent like that than in a night on the town...

My mate suggested I have a crack at that www.freedating.co.uk and I was sceptical as fook, but to be fair that was two years ago and I'm still with the bird I met on there now!

I'll say this though, meeting a bird off the internet for the first time is bloody nerve wracking! I was sat in the pub waiting for her to arrive and my old arse was going like a good un'  ;D
