I tried, I really tried, but in the end i just couldn't resist. This pick comes with a caveat - my festival will need a full scale replica of the Cafe Carlyle built into the stage

Best ever version of Send in the Clowns in there somewhere

Probably the best live experience I’ve had in the last ten years or so, which is why I've chosen them - I like their recorded stuff but they don't really shine until you see them in the flesh. Formed in New York in 2004 these guys leave it all out on the stage and are just a shitload of fun really, five blokes who look like librarians fast approaching middle age but who really know how to kick up one hell of a sweet racket.

A punky, indie-ey bastardised version of classic rock - so pub rock really, but in the best possible sense - over which frontman Craig Finn talk-sings wordy, literate, frequently hilarious tales of debauchery and twisted night life that burst into life with epic, singalong choruses. I think I read somewhere that he’d been described as the “poet laureate of the fucked up,” and though this is probably a bit of a misnomer, the guy’s got talent and he’s a real entertainer. As the man himself says though, he’s just part of a band who “play bad-ass rock and roll while I spout bollocks over the top.” The videos are worth checking out just for Craig Finn and keyboardist Franz Nicolay.

Television

Tom Verlaine
Richard Lloyd
Fred Smith
Billy Ficca

1975-78

I was going to do an extensive write-up on how Television were one of the most important bands to emerge from New York's punk scene of the mid-'70s, essentially creating a new guitar vocabulary. But all I really want to say is this is guitar porn. Listen and enjoy.

"Don’t let your heads drop. We’re Liverpool. You’re playing for Liverpool. Don’t forget that. You have to hold your heads high for the supporters. You have to do it for them." - Rafa Benitez, halftime, Istanbul, 2005.

Joy Division

Ian Curtis
Bernard Sumner
Peter Hook
Stephen Morris

Let's face it, they deserve to be picked. So I'm doing it. I was a late comer to these guys, only picking up on them post-uni when I was over at a friend's place and they stuck on New Dawn Fades. Within moments I was completely transfixed. When I asked who it was, she looked at me in disbelief. How could I not know this band? How could I have missed them all these years? I think it was Joy Division that started my whole obsession with post punk. Better late than never, I guess. But that's the beauty of music. The catalogue of artists and bands is so large that it's impossible for any of us to have listened to everything. It's moments like this when you find that new sound, the kind that makes your hairs stand on end, which are really like no other. And that's what this draft was all about  :)

I was planning on picking someone else, but then I thought I couldn't possibly let this guy go unpicked. Headlining my festival will be none other than the King of Pop....

Boss tune that lad . First time I've heard it too.

It's never to late to hear new stuff.
He who sees himself in all beings and all beings in himself loses all fear.

- The Upanishads.

The heart knows the way. Run in that direction

- Rumi

You are held . You are loved . You are seen  - Some wise fella .
