If you like playing riffs/leads you'll need to learn and practice scales.

I've done the same as LymmRed in terms of putting time in practising especially doing it without looking, but focussed on scales more than chords, and am getting pretty decent on the fretboard now.

Ok cheers mate, I am decent on the fretboard although all the little notes do get confusing, I have still only learnt around 3 chords so got some serious practising to do.

I'm going to post this in a couple of guitar threads:

I have a Fender Blues Junior amp, which is 15w and nice for playing clean, but way too loud for my central London apartment.  I have a Strat and Gretsch Tennessean.

I've been looking at high quality 5W amps, and have come up with a few, hoping the "pros" here can give me advice on what they think is the better one, and pros/cons if they have any knowledge of them.

a) Cornford Harlequin
b) Gries 5
c) Swart SpaceTone 6V6se or SpaceTone Reverb
d) Richter 5e3

Try them all and let your ears decide.

No-one here can give anything but an opinion, which should really be irrelevant to you.

It's probably wrong to say any one of them is "better" than the other three in any other way than personal preference.

Barney, the 3 US ones are tough to find here in shops, I'll probably have to import it in if I go that way.

Forgot to add, if anyone has other suggestions, I'd love to hear them, ta.

Fair enough, but why not go and try available amps in a music shop near where you are?

If you're looking at 5W amps, you're not talking Mesa-Boogie or Gallien-Kruger really, eh?

Don't be mislead by all the techno-gibberish, and don't spend a hell of a lot more than you need to.

There isn't a music shop anywhere that knows the best amp for you. They can recommend, but only YOU (and your ears) can should decide.

How about this?

It's only 2 watts, but it's brill. My lad's got one.

Pros, it's a Marshall. Cons, None, it's a Marshall..

Terry, can't afford £21.95 ;D

Seriously, I want a valve amp, 10-12" speaker, high quality tubes and circuitry etc.

Ended up getting one of these this week, it's a Cornell Plexi 7.  Really, really happy with how it sounds, a huge improvement over my Fender Blues Junior (and more manageable volume levels)

7 watts output, but switchable to 1 watt and 1/4 watt, and it's stunning how loud it is even only on 4-5 at 1/4 watt!

2-12AX7 and a EL84 valves, 10" Celestion speaker in a 1X10 combo package.

It's like having a miniature Marshall stack in your living room, great creamy saturated lead tones, and bristling edgy distortion are both available even at the low watt settings.

I'm about a week and a half into learning and my chord changes are as fast as glacial movement, plus I hit 6 strings when I'm meant to hit 4, and I don't know when to upstrum and downstrum.

But I'm determined, Jimi will have nothing on me.

Degs, that's the key, "stickability"!

Found this one awhile back, some good lessons for beginners on chords, chord changes, scales and strumming patterns for $19.95 (and a bunch of song lessons included).  There's a free lesson video to look at as well.  It may help you.

Has anyone got any tips on how to construct solos/riffs? I've been playing the guitar for a fair few years now but I want to move on from just playing rhythm and copying solos (by reading tabs) to actually creating my own. I have started to learn scales but I'm still not entirley sure how to move on from that.

Lick Library has got some videos on harmony & theory, learning to play rock solo's, melodic soloing etc, which can help you out.

Tried to learn when I was younger on and off for about 3 years. Never got very far, combination of laziness and hyper mobility in my fingers. I'd still love to be able to play, even just the absolute basics, but my fingers have got worse since then. Anyone got a similar problem/ any possible solutions?

I'm learning and loving it.
I thought it would be frustrating not getting things right but it's just so relaxing to sit off with it.

I can play the start of Airbag by Radiohead now, and while it's only one string I'm fucking made up.

Can somebody do me a favour and identify this kind of guitar though, it's the nicest I've ever seen.

Does anyone else here think that a lot of the more expensive "name" makers of guitars are just a tad overrated, i've played top of the range Les Paul's, Strats, Telecasters, Gretsch Country Gents and still go back to my trusty old Aria Pro, my guitar of choice for the last 10 years and still the single most comfortable, warm and yet dynamic guitar i've ever had the pleasure of playing.

If it feels great, and sounds great... the name don't matter a jot.

I've played some lovely cheap-as-chips guitars.

And I've seen plenty of Les Paul's, Strat's, Tele's in the hands of some right knobheads.

Exactly the same as golf clubs, come to think of it... :lmao

Is the correct answer. I gigged with a battered 20 odd year old Squier Strat (bought as new).  It sounded and played beautiful.
It's mounted in a glass case now in a bar in Portugal, but it earned me a few bob and fuck me, it has done some mileage.. 8)

Thats an awsome bit of kit there JP, congrats, I would have loved to have got my hands on a Gibson LP but my budget would'nt stretch that far so i settled for an Epi LP custom and i absolutely love it, lovelly fat warm crunchy tones and i cant put it down either.

anyway JP, I think you and I started about the same time mate, how are you progressing? have you hit as many walls as i have?  :butt

The Epi looks super as well.  My wife saw a Gibson Custom Shop LP that looks similar to yours, and I have to say it really looked lovely, but I wanted a 58 or 59 reissue VOS otherwise I would have bought that one.  The Gibson/Epi tone is super though isn't it?  What amp are you playing through?

I started playing golf 10 years ago, and now am a low handicapper.  I went through a lot of ups and downs in the process though, and it's helped me a lot with my guitar playing, as I know advancement comes in spurts with serious "lulls" in between.

Whenever I hit a "wall", I spend time slowing down, trying to relax my hands, body and breathing, and focus on what my hands are doing in slow motion, then try to speed up slowly, observing at what speed my technique starts to break down, and what's causing the breakdown of technique.

Having said that, my biggest "roadblocks" right now to playing better are my barre chords, and my poor sense of timing.

What's working/not working for you?

I'm playing through a Marshall MG15DFX and use a Zoom G2 effects box, and yes, although everyone has different tastes, I love the tone of the Humbuckers on the Gibson/Epi's

What works for me? well I had some excellent advice a while back, a friend of mine told me to always put accuracy before speed, so when I am learning something new I will start off very slowly and be as precise as possible with the fingerings, then when I feel comfortable with it I will gradually build up the speed, this along with hours of repetition has worked very well for me!

I have only just got my head around strumming patterns too, it takes some practice keeping your strumming hand moving consistently to a beat while changing chords at the same time, I tried to use a metronome but could'nt get the hang of it so I find it much easier just playing along to the songs I like, it has improved my timing immensely

I have mastered most of the basic chords and can change very fluently, as for barre chords! well, I understand how they work but
after trying to play them I tend to avoid them for the time being!

It's a long and tortuous journey this guitar malarky eh! but very addictive and I would'nt swap it for the world, I love it!

I'm getting stuck into some Oasis stuff at the moment, It's probably just my level at the minute, not too technical and not too easy, Noel's solos are fairly simple yet very melodic I think.

Who are your influences and what kind of music are you learning to play?

I worked more on scales early on, so I have the major/minor/major pentatonic/minor pentatonic/blues scales in all 5 positions pretty much nailed, just need to get faster on them.

Went at chords later, and have spent a lot of time lately working on them so now can play and change between them pretty well (major, minor, dominant 7ths, major 7ths, minor 7ths, sus 2/4).

Strumming patterns have been hard for me, I struggle with the shuffle rhythm, and have trouble maintaining consistency in my strumming (brain can't do two things at the same time LOL).

I'd really like to get barre chords down as I know the CAGED system theory, which opens the fretboard up to chord playing, but my technique is lacking to play barre's.

I like to play old stuff like Beatles, early Bee Gees, Moody Blues, Nirvana etc.  I want to start playing some bluesier stuff like John Mayer, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, as well as some Led Zepplin one's.  I spent December working on Christmas Carols and ended up with over 20 in my repertoire, which was fun on xmas day.

I'm with you on the metronome, I can't hear it very well, so don't really know if I'm in time.  I've recently found a bunch of on-line mp3's with backing drum tracks at various bpm's.  If you're interested in them, I'll see if I can "grab them" off the site (it's a pay site) and I'll email them to you.

Your friends advice is real sound.  I always thought that the "pro's" were natural, and this stuff came to them easily, then I read an article from someone who is a top session player, explaining how he'd sometimes work for 2 hours on 3 bars of music, trying different fingerings, working to get the bars down perfectly, so your point on repetition is on the money.

To close this, I have to thank you, because it was your enthusiasm about starting that got me going.  I'd wanted to play piano for many, many years and put it off because of space constraints, but when I read your posts it got me thinking "yeah, I can do that" and off I went.  Recently I bought a M-Audio digital keyboard, and have started to work on this as well (my golfing time has been seriously reduced)......so yeah, it really is addictive!
