5-2 down now. Layton Stewart got our second. Guess this has been sacrificed to enable us to rest the senior players tomorrow night. Will be interesting to hear what John Colman says to Peter Hooton next time they are on Blood Red podcast

That takes us to 31 goals conceded in 12 games at this level, a pretty spectacular return.

A small sample size of course, but will be interesting to see how it plays out over the remainder of the season - is this a statistical anomaly or indicative of something else?

Pity these EFL trophy games have come in League Cup weeks when our best young players are with the first team, but I suppose the EFL clubs often have league games on European match nights.

It doesn't really work. They used to have them during the international breaks but then your best youngesters are all away with their age groups. 2 of our 3 games have been in the same midweek as our League Cup games.

You can see why we haven't entered teams previously.

Some real talent in our youth teams. I'm now understanding how they have the second worst defensive record in the U23 league though... ;D

What did people think of Van Den Berg last night? Personally thought there were times he showed decent composure but I was surprised by how slow he looked. We've seen the value of recovery pace with Gomez and Van Dijk, so you'd have expected any new CB recruit to be of a similar mould.

Van Den Berg has been poor since joining but is very young. Improved in the 2nd half last night though showing good character after a horror 1st half.

Williams was excellent definitely ahead of Hoever as an RB option.

Brewster done very well in the 2bd half last night. Seen on twitter many saying he was useless ffs.
Another lively game from Elliott needs to improve finishing but that should come. Jones was excellent coming on.

Debatable that. Hoever did pretty well at RB too. He also seemed to be a lot stronger and faster than Williams there.

Seen loads of Hoever for Holland at u17 Euros & in the Youth games.

Williams is quicker. Hoever is very poor at reading balls in behind in particular. Still young but Williams is ahead of him. But Hoever maybe will be a CB long term.

Bit disappointed that the uefa youth game against Genk isn't being shown on tv this week.

Watching the kids in the afternoon is a nice warm up to the main event for me.

It was moved to the Academy yesterday, they've not been able to accommodate fans so must have been difficult to set up live cameras too. Tis a pity alright.

I do believe he will be a good player 1st team though. I was thinking Jones would be a huge loss our best youth player

I liked what I saw of Brewster in the 2 league cup games, but feel he could do with some time at a championship/lower prem club to really push on.

He isn't making much of an impact when he plays for the U23s or the U19 in Europe so I don't think goin on loan to a Championship/Premiership club will help. He's best bet right now is to work under the watchful eye of Klopp and his staff. If there is loan to be had, you'd think it would be in August just before the next season starts.

Agreed. Really needs to kick on IMO otherwise it likely forces us into the market come next summer or definitely the year after with the front free all 28-29 at that point.

Brewster still very raw. He does hold the ball well decently and his work rate is good but he really has to make more impact wherever he plays. The bar is very very high to break into this team and even though Klopp gives chances to young players, he is honest in his evaluation as well. Solanke was an example of that, he was decent but lacked that bit of an edge to force things. He can still improve and I think Klopp still has faith in his talents but there's other young lads who have taken their chances a bit better than him so far. Eliott, for one, has looked really really good and seems to have done excellently even with the senior team. Same too for Curtis Jones. Brewster will need to do a lot more to repay the faith.
