Welcome to the Arts and Media board - Submit your best links here...

(1/8) > >>

Armin:
After only one day PS (post split) I'm already liking this board a lot :)

In celebration, or simply because I feel like it, I'm asking you to raid your favourites and submit your favourite Art/TV/Film etc sites for this stickied thread. Try and include a couple of sentences of why you like them and in time I'll amalgamate all of the responses into one giant rawk guide to the arts, a bit like the guide to Liverpool thread. If it's a success we could do the same across the other boards.

If your submitted site refers to only one aspect of the arts or media then please say so.  It will save me having to actually click on it and work out what the hell it is.

You can use the clickable links below to navigate the list:

GENERAL

Meta Critic - Reviews from respected critics and publications for film, video/dvd, books, music, television and games. Metascores show the critical consensus at a glance by taking a weighted average of critic grades. Good for an overview and shows the range of views on albums, books and games etc...

Swine Magazine - Free online magazine. Irreverent and funny, check the sacred cows column for some powerful invective against the great and the good. As recommended by Jon G.

Positive Energy Of Madness - Some decent interviews on here, it also has the top 5 guitar stances. Small font issue may cause mild irritation.

3am Magazine - A wide range of artsy related writing. Contrary to what you may believe the site is accessible at all times of the day.

The Culture Club an excellent review site that critiques art, music and literature.

EBOOKS/WRITING

Project Bartleby - An online collection of thousands of free books, poems and anthologies including many of the classics of Western civilisation.

Blackmask Books - A collection of free Ebooks for download, including some interesting looking pulp fiction.

Project Gutenberg Free eBook Library - Project Gutenberg is the first and largest single collection of free electronic books, or eBooks.

The Internet Public Library - The first public library of and for the Internet community.

Encyclopedia Mythica - An award-winning internet encyclopedia of mythology, folklore, and religion. Here you will find everything from A-gskw to Zveda Vechanyaya, with plenty in between.

Crime Library - Court TV's website with all you need to plan the perfect crime. If you screw up remember to mention Rawk before they throw the switch.

Online Magical Library - A number of books on magic and mythology that have been collected over the Internet.  If you're looking for info on turning David Moyes into a misshapen toad or making Everton the shittest team in creation it's been done already.

Internet Medieval Sourcebook - Thou knowest that bloke down the local that contends that the Ninth Ecmunenical council was heretical? Put a stop to his rogueish malefaction by visiting this site.

Arts & Letters Daily - Be warned. AL Daily is a potential black Hole. You may never re-emerge...

MUSIC

Pitchfork Media - Music and gig reviews. Many of the bands featured play loud music and have long hair.

Artists2Events - Tour & Festival Dates, find out how to avoid seeing Ten Pole Tudor or Kiki Dee in your town.

Art Of The Mix - Website dedicated to making mixed tapes and cds. Guaranteed to make you feel hopelessly mainstream and ignorant.

E-Festivals - Pretty much THE website for fezzy rumours. Rumours/lineups for all the big ones and some smaller ones too. Not a lot happening on there at the mo, but after Christmas the whole festival cycle begins again! They are normally pretty accurate with their rumours, news etc. Also some good reviews/articles and some decent forums as well.

The Perfumed Garden Blog - Download all those Peel Sessions and throw out that stack of 500 C60's from under the stairs.

Peel Sessions - Details all the sessions recorded for the John Peel Radio 1 programme since 1992, intended as an unofficial appendix to Ken Garner's book 'In Session Tonight', which covered the first twenty-five years of the Peel sessions.

BBC John Peel Tribute - The Beeb's own JP tribute area, which also includes Sessions and Festive 50 info

All Music - Mainstream but wide ranging and useful to keep up with things if you live outside mainstream music centres like Liverpool, London, NY, and Fishguard.

Am I Right? - A music site that does not take itself too seriously. Band names info, musical parodies, misheard (and real) lyrics, musical quotes and jokes, music news and more. "Making fun of music. One song at a time..."

Epitonic - Very handy music site, legal mp3s to download (typically one or two per band) from a huge variety of alternative bands. I've found a couple of great artists courtesy of this site (listen to Artificial Light by Rainer Maria if you like slightly lo-fi Pavement/Promise Ring - esque music!).

HoodStars - Covers all kinds of urban music. Exclusive music up there from SKG, COOLWADDA and BIGGE to mention a few. Exclusive interview from people such as, Madonna, L-Jay, Lara Mcallen (of Angel City), Candyman187, MOP, Mobb Deep and Desperado amongst others. HOODSTARS is the place to be if this is music your into.

FILM

The Internet Movie Database - If you've ever lain awake tortured by your inability to recall the name of the 'Best Boy' on Police Academy 18, all your answers are here. If you still can't sleep see above for the Ninth Ecumenical council agenda.

Kamera - A UK-based website dedicated to covering arthouse, independent and world cinema. Some good films reviewed here, good luck in finding them at your local multiplex.

Britfilms.com - All you want to know about British films.

Rottentomatoes - close to definitive movie review site. Gathers reviews from around the globe, with the emphasis on North America.

Boxofficemojo - Global box office site, with, again, an emphasis on North America. Has all time adjusted box office counts plus heaps of other box office information. If you want to find out what happened at the box office in any given week this is the place to go.

BoxOfficeGuru - box office prediction site. Has a reasonable following because he's normally pretty accurate. Reasons given why something may/has failed/succeeded are interesting.

AintItCool? - the 'granddaddy' of moviesites on the web. Collects all sorts of inside news and 'preview screening' reviews of films, some of them weeks before they are released. Site owner went from being a couch potato to one of the most powerful people in Hollywood on the basis of this site.

Nit Pickers - For those who like to note mistakes and innacuracies in films. Can't imagine there's much call for that amongst our chilled out membership.

Done Deal - Your daily Internet screenwriting news resource for screenplay, pitch, treatment, and book deals in the film industry, in addition to interviews, software & book reviews, advice, agency & production company listings, contests, & news.

TELEVISION

The British Sitcom Guide - A good site for all UK TV Sitcoms and Comedies with some episode guides and weblinks.

TV Cream - A directory of past television shows from the UK, US, Australia, Europe and beyond, from the 1960s to the 1980s, constructed from found archive material, but mainly from the memories of Cream contributors.

Halcyon Days TV Memories - TV nostalgia

Nostalgia Central - Internet reference guide to TV from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s

Jump The Shark - Anyone who remembers Fonzie jumping over a shark on water skis will remember the unofficial death of Happy Days and understand what this excellent site is all about. You can look up virtually any TV programme in the world ever and calculate when it "jumped the shark".

Crafty TV - Streaming TV classics.

TV.com - A bit US-centric, but is still a very extensive and slick site for television show information from the 1930s to present day. A good companion to use alongside IMDB.

TV Ark - Clips of old TV shows, TV idents, local adverts, public info films and other gems. Fantastic site. You need Real Player to appreciate it.

QI - Website of the TV series QI

RADIO

BBC Radio
Radio 1
Radio 2
Radio 3
Radio 4
Five Live
Five Live Sports Extra
6 Music
1 Xtra
Radio 7

World Service

XFM - Fantastic radio station that you can listen to over this 'ere interweb thingy - based in london although i believe there is soon to be an 'xfm manchester'. if you're not from that neck of the woods it's well worth a listen, and it's also a decent website for music news and features and stuff... Says Blurred, however as someone who listened to XFM when it first launched and played some genuinely leftfield material I seem to remember it going severely downhill when it was bought by Capitol...

ResonanceFM - At times, resonancefm is the best radio on the interweb, and easily one of the most varied. Some great comedy, leftfield poetry, lots of discussion on the arts, and a wide range of music each day. No day is ever the same.

Radio Feeds - Allows you to search through and for any radio station in the UK and Ireland and listen to them.

Macca Radio - Free internet radio station which plays the Fab Four's music + their solo stuff 24 hours a day, including Beatle-related news, reviews, interviews and more.

ART

Mimi Love - Mimi is an artist, does some really cool painting of famous photos.

This Is A Magazine- An online art magazine. Each issue is completely free to read watch and listen. It’s also a great place to spot up and coming artists, like Supermundane who had his first show at Filler. We could have bought those 4 plates we showed for 60-80 quid? They’re going for about £400 now. Bugger. But you could spend a day going through the archives. Always surprising and varied.

Ingleby Gallery - A great gallery in Edinburgh mainly showing modern art

The Louvre Online - Prob the best online art gallery guide Quincyg has seen.

CGFA - Featured Artists - Browse hundreds of works by many artists.

Art Cyclopedia - Guide to great art on the Internet.

Deviant Art - Galleries and Forums for display and discussion of the digital arts.

The National Virtual Museum - Celebrating UK Culture. News, listings and features from 3,000+ Museums, Galleries and Heritage Sites.

World Socialist Arts Review - This site is a great one for those looking for views on the arts outside of the mainstream. The reviews of mainstream fare, whilst some of which you may not agree with, at the very least cast the arts we encounter everyday in a different, thought provoking light from reviews you might read anywhere else.

DESIGN

Linkdup - Good for checking out nicely designed websites .

Dope Awards - No its not about weed, but more quality designed websites.

D&AD - Worth checking out Talentpool for some interesting young designers.

Armin:
Try to include a brief sentence about the site if possible, it makes it more of a guide than a list.

Thanks for the submissions and explanations, please keep them coming and I'll collate them all soon(ish).  This is getting to be a really good collection of links.

One way you could help is if you submitted your link using the

--- Code: ---descriptive link
--- End code ---

descriptive link function rather than just as an everyday hyperlink.

Filler.:
