Saturday 3pm games on live TV
« on: September 13, 2005, 01:22:10 PM »
Does anyone know what this is all about?  Apparently a pub a few miles from me showed the Spurs v Liverpool match live with the help of a gigantic sky dish and a £50 per month subscription to some dodgy foreign channel.

Not that i agree with it you see, but was wondering how hard it's be to get the same thing at my house - and it's not like the pub are gonna tell me is it?

This is UK by the way - i know some overseas reds are able to pick up all sorts

Do you live in a small village that you can't leave? Games have been shown on foreign satellite in pubs for years!

Mork calling Orson, come in Orson.

As stated, been happening for moons.

It is possible to get a motorised satellite dish which you can angle depending on what channel you wanna watch.

It is possible although not really allowed. I watched the spurs game live (cough) in the comfort of my recliner.

A more important point is why don't sky cash in on this and sell live games at 3pm. I know the premiership won't alow it but surely they are missing out big time. Even if they just sold the games to pubs it would be a huge income bringer and allow the legions of fans that can't get tickets or travel to away games to see their side legally.

The point is pubs are already doing it, albeit illegally so why not just do it and take the cash themselves?

Its UEFA rules that prevent games being shown live at 3pm, they say it would have a detrimental affect on attendences.

its also an infringement of sky's copyright which is why places keep getting shut down and fined and why the names of pubd that do show it shouldnt be mentioned in open forum.

I agree.  It would especially hurt attendance at lower league matches.  I quite like the fact that 3pm matches aren't shown live.

There's only one pub left in my town that still shows the dodgy footy because Sky threatened all the pubs with taking Sky off 'em. Luckily this one pub which isn't particularly busy just said 'fucking take it back then!' so Sky did.

As a result this pub is probably far better off financially. They don't have the extortionate cost of Sky for pubs and now on a Saturday their takings are probably up ten-fold.

Sky Italia had a chosen game on Saturday at three last season.  This seems to have improved because last Saturday they had the manc derby on sky one...but then in the sky clacio channels they put 5 other games you could choose from. This seems to be happening for this weekend as well.

You can get uk sky in italy with a 1m dish and an unused uk bought receiver.  you order the card at a uk address and then ask them to activate it with the serial number of the box.  so....in theory you could do the reverse for sky italia.

Have a look at sites like digital spy (can't remember the URL) for technical stuff.

MotD is the only thing that makes Saturday night slightly entertaining. Could you face watching anymore sh!te on TV on a Sat night if MotD stopped and all games were shown at 3pm?? Thats a reason for not watching the illegals.

Saying that I was gutted when my local burnt down and they stopped showing the illegals

I don't think that it would affect attendances. As for lower league teams. They are only supported by die-hards. If pubs did have live games on at 3pm then the price of a pint would prob rocket and can you imagine everyone boozed up on a Sat afternoon every week? The Councils and Plod wouldn't have it.

Thing that pisses me off about MOTD- is that more often than not, Liverpool have 2-3 mins of highlights... If I couldn't watch the match live- I'd like to watch at least 45 mins of highlights... the match choice thing is good- however, we have ntl digital, and so can't access the game choice...

Funniest though was the Carling Cup Final.

As extra time started so did a German Second Division Game.

It really pisses me off that we miss the weekend games and have to wait for web updates and then stupid highlights. Sky do show full games later but its not the same excitement watching a game live.

The only way around this problem is if LFC set up their own TV channel on SKY like Man U TV and Chelsea TV. That way we can watch ALL the games! And there would be no shortage of subscribers.

Why don't we all lobby for one?

There are plenty of sites around the net that show Live football every Saturday. Some free and some PPV! But much cheaper than Sky.

Also there was a thread about PPLive on the forum last Saturday with loads of good info for people to watch the Asian stream of our games!

Here in Sweden, we use Canal+. We have a choice of games at 3pm  Saturday afternoon. They also show exactly the same games as Sky, including the ones on Prem+, and many extra games during the week that Sky dont show. I pay about £15 for the service, which is well worth it. But dont forget that Canal+ pay Sky for the rights to show these games. Canal+ is on either Sirius or Thor Satelites.

Yeah that wouldn't work. ChelseaTV or MANUTV don't actually show their games live. Only Sky can do that (legally) in this country.

Pubs showing Saturday 3pm games in the last decade show that their is definitely a market for it. IMO its only a matter of time till Sky do the same. Lower league teams should be compensated if attendances fall and given the option of kicking off at another time or day.

Okay to put in a decent motorised system will set you back circa £500.  plus instalation You then have a choice of tracking the sat scene and making your own cards the cost does add up with the the various encryptions changing every few months.  Or you can buy a legitamate 6 month subscription for anywhere between £70 & £120 for a foreign channel that will give you all the games sky show plus saturday 3 oclocks .
Much better option than having sky at home and you get some film and educational channels as a bonus

A cry for help.

I live in Bristol now and I've never found a pub here that shows the matches live on a Saturday. Loads of pubs in Liverpool do it and loads in London do it, but none here. There is electricity here so I know it's possible.

Can anyone help?

This isn't illegal. It's not illegal to pick up tv channels that are being broadcast. It doesn't matter if they are foreign or not.

What IS illegal is a pub with a Sky entertainment licence - the one that costs £10,000 per year, showing non sky channels as this contravenes their contract with Sky. Sky would be perfectly within their rights to revoke their licence.

Nothing wrong with doing it at home though.

In Spain, they get to watch any La Liga games they want, and their attendances are hardly low now are they? You can get motorised systems on ebay for about £200, so you just need someone on top of that to install, which will be around £100-150. I don't see why Sky don't put more pressure on the premier league to get the 3pms, afterall, whats to stop sky from paying considerably less for the tv rights next time since no one else is in a position to come close to their current offer. From what I understand, uefa have a rule whereby the prem league can have a time window where no matches can be publically screened, and obviously they exercise this right for the 3 pm k.o.'s - obviously nothing is wrong with screening them in your own home for private use  via foreign satellites etc

I used to live in South Africa till I was 20 yrs old and when i was around 15 onwards there were always games showing at 3pm, when I moved over here (with my parents who are british) I was so shocked to find no games at 3pm.... I don't thimk it will bring the attendences down at all. People still want to see the mighty reds play at anfield.

If you want footy games on a Saturday in the comfort of your own home you can't go wrong looking at these sites for more information on satellite systems:

www.satellitesuperstore.com

www.satelliteonline.co.uk

www.satalogue.com

On the other hand, if you can't be arsed with all that expense you can watch live streams of the matches on your PC for FREE (plus get the most out of your broadband subscription). Admittedly the quality is like watching a 1970's broadcast of Liverpool in Europe (and you have to fiddle around with BBC Radio 5 Live commentary on Real Player for 5 mins at the beginning of the stream to get the audio to match the video, as its slightly delayed coming from HongKong), but as long as you've got at least a 1.5meg broadband connection, all you have to do is sit back (with a Carlsberg in your hand) and feel smug as you watch LFC smash the opposition on a Saturday afternoon  8).

Here's the best place to look for help on doing this:

www.fbtz.com
"Of course I didn't take my wife to see Rochdale as an anniversary present, it was her birthday. Would I have got married in the football season? Anyway, it was Rochdale reserves." Bill Shankly

"If a player is not interfering with play or seeking to gain an advantage, then he should be." Bill Shankly on the off-side rule
