It was superb tv viewing to be honest! Des Cahill was doing the interviewing. Went through Ronnie's football career!
Loads of superb goosebump moments, including the 2 goals he scored against the Mancs in the League Cup Final, one super goal in Extra Time when Frank Stapleton (of all people) had moved back to defense! He said that King Kenny gave him loads of digs about not passing it to him..... instead he took the shot, curled it past Gary Bailey and the rest is history!

Also, emotional moments including Heysel and Hillsborough, Ronnie was captain in '89. It then showed the goals from the '89 Cup Final - Rushy's 2 goals to win the cup and consign the blues to more misery!!
Ronnie stated that lifting the cup that year for Liverpool was the highlight of his career!!! He made a very valid poing however! He played his last game in Europe that night in the Heysel Stadium, but he was saying that if English teams had been allowed to play in Europe after that, LFC may have added to eheir European Cup triumphs, seeing as they had a great team for a number of years, with Beardsley, Barnes, Rush, Aldridge, McMahon et al.

All in all, i found it a very enjoyable programme, only stumbled across it by accident!!!

Ronnie Whelan. . . . . . .  we salute you!!  ;D

Watched it myself and really enjoyed it, Ronnie has alot of time for the club and is a great man and was a great player. I had a tear in my eye watching the bit about Hillsborough and you could see in his eyes that it still effects him.

He was a god, wasn't he? Had a fantastic knack of scoring amazing goals at vitally important times. Remember the one he scored against Man Utd in the FA Cup game at Goodison?

That curler you mention against Man U has to be one of the greatest LFC goals ever.

I used to bevvy in his pub (The Winchester, I think?) years ago and he was always about and a top man.

Ya saw that last night, class show! Ronnie is a legend, especially as he snubbed utd to come to Anfield. Never hear him in the press knocking the present regime at the club either. Great goals include the shinner against USSR, the curler in lge cup final vs utd and of course THAT own goal aswell!

Very natural footballer who had great vision, and as he admits himself played in a fantastic liverpool team full of quality.

I missed the program but heard him being interviewed on Irish radio a while back where they made the point that he played his last European Cup tie at Heysel (where he was brought down in the box no question but the ref didn't give a pen - I think he just wanted to give the cup to Juve - whose pen was for a foul outside the box) at the age of 23.  All those wasted years...still nothing in comparison to all those waste lives.
Sorry for being morose. Ronnie was a top player for club and country.

My hero growing up.  That is also becuse I have never been a flash football player, and never been quick and nippy enough to play as striker.  But yes, above Rush and Dalglish, he was my hero.

After 20 odd years, I still haven't been able to replicate that curler he scored against Bailey.

Any hints out there on how to do it?

Ronnie Whelan was always my favourite player deep down, despite Dalglish being king. I somehow felt Whelan was an unsung hero.

Well, that's a given. I didn't see any other team in the mid to late 80s that would have been superior to Liverpool until the great AC Milan came along in 1989. Look at the teams that won the European Cup in 1985, '86, '87 and '88. For sure Liverpool would have been European champs on another 2 or 3 occasions. I'm certain we would have even beaten Juventus in the 1985 final if not for the tragedy.

Strike across the ball rather than at it, but with the same point of contact you would use for it to go slightly wide - the spin imparted will cause the ball to curl back in.

Best Whelan momment for me has to be his detirmination during the 87/88 season to stop the ball that seemed lost on the touchline, put himself in the crowd, come back, beat one man to the ball just in time, beat another and square to Aldo to finish at the far post.

Great player and really underrated.

I can picture it in my head but the players face is now obscured. I;m sure someone on here will know for deffo.

I also remember Whealan talking about how him and McMahon used to keep a little notepad of who had crunched one of them in a particular game so they knew who was owed one next time they came to town

How was oy supossed to know it was a shitehole at that age?!

One of my fave all time players. He is the very defintion of a teamplayer who did the simple things very well and got on with the job - and also chipped in with his fair share of goals, many of which are just so superb that they the reveal the sublime talent that this guy had.

I really hope the club have/will recorded inteviews with players (legends)  like Ronnie for any future dvd releases or archives. A joy to watch - a joy to listen to.

What about his free kick vs Arsenal.

"Is it gonna be Whelan, or is it gonna be Barnes? Its gonna be Barnes. Currrrrled BRILLIANTLY!!"

Actually, whilst typing this I just realised it was Barnes who took it. What a numpty I am!!!I guess I could always remember Whelan celebrating with Digger!!

Still a quality goal worth remembering!
