Funny little memories of Istanbul
« on: May 30, 2005, 05:28:34 pm »
Every now and then  something triggers a memory of some small incident that  puts a big smile back on my face - a few here  that occurred to me today

That tramp in the street with us on Tuesday night, and the song when he found a half empty glass " Mini- Pavarotti's found a beer"

Lee J falling off his chair a few minutes later

The taxi driver on the way back to Taksim before we picked up the coach to the ground, putting the car stereo full up and then Lonely by Akon coming on the radio and Jon G, Hally, Kirsty and myself singing along

Having to roll my trousers up to my knees in the 'hole in the ground' toilets near the coaches at Taksim
and having to come out of the stadium portaloos with everything undone as the stench was making me gag

Bet there a million silly personal moments out there.....

People being driven up and down the street in the JCB bucket in Sultanehmet was very funny.

As was waking up in the hotel bed to find my head surrounded by 6 pairs of shoes.

It was later alleged I have a snoring problem.

The security gaurd frisking me on the way into the stadium and being friendly.  Too friendly.

It's really disconcerting when your male frisker is saying (cue gayish Turkish accent):

'oooh hello.  are you excited?' (whilst he frisks your upper leg area)

'i hope you all behave yourselves tonight' (whilst he frisks your back - thus virtually hugging you)

'i hope you win, i think liverpool have the best fans' (whilst patting your bum)

After getting through that, I had the joy of watching my mate go through the same process. ;D  I could have warned him but decided not to.

What about the perfume seller in Taksim Sq. He wanted €50 for some fake Tommy Hilfiger perfume. We haggled him down to €1 and then we said we didn't want it. So he threw the bottle at us and it smashed on the floor.

About 4:15am & the nightly ritual of loud speakers going off in the streets from the Mosques.

Some scouser obviously spending his first night in Istanbul was screaming outside his bedroom window...

'Shut the fuck up, I'm trying to get some fucking kip here'.

Along with the moments Roger's mentioned here are a few more starting from just a few hours on the road to Istanbul....

* Roger losing his cap (car window wide open) on a M11 junction on our way to Stansted, turning back several miles after, to find it hadnt been run over.

* Looked around the Phillips Stadion in Eindhoven. As we walked round a PSV fan started chatting to us; he told us he had been studying God for 8 years. Unsure why he mentioned this in the conversation we duelly said our goodbyes. He had been to 2 PSV games in that period of 8 years.

* Irish Times Pub, Hasselt, Belgium. Some 45 year old bird trying to chat up anyone who went to the bar bar the catching sink. Bizzarely, her husband was next to her at the bar.

* Some crazy dutch fella kicking off in an Eindhoven bar hotel. He told us he supported 4 teams in England, Tottenham, Newcastle, Chelsea and some other. He was wearing a Newcastle shirt over a Portugal shirt. Stated that Chelsea fucked us over in the league and that we where shit. He stormed off setting the Fire Exit Alarm off in the process. Later returned and shook our hands and wished us good luck for the final.  ;D

* Another crazy dutchman in same hotel bar.

Hadn't even got to Istanbul by then.

A bloke buying a long handled brush from a street trader and then start cleaning the bus windows with it when it stopped at the traffic lights.

A scopuser who had just ordered 6 pints responding to the question of whether he'd like a tray with "Don't you think I've got enough to carry lad?!"

The fella's face was brilliant!

Murf might not find it funny but...Paul T (having never met Murf before) introduces himself  by saying "...recognised you by the picture in the Ugly thread."

If Kenny Dalglish had simply played football for Liverpool he would be an Anfield hero. However, the fact that he managed the club to even greater success guarantees him the status of a legend.

 ;D

He lost his bank card, does that count?

I presume you made your flight? Me and my brother had a four hour wait in Frankfurt.  :butt

Then I had a three hour wait at Heathrow for the Edinburgh flight.  :butt

Didn't care, we'd just won the European Cup.  :D

Sounds like a bit of a long trek home Michael, I was one of the few who managed to get through the whole thing without too much hassle on the travel front, the second leg of the outbound flight was a bit delayed but coming back both were fine and after the match I even hung around long enough for them to start running the buses along the Milan route so it only took about 30 mins into town.

Not exactly a typical experience though

A funny moment for me was when dropping us off at our hotels in Istanbul, the bus driver tried to take a short cut down some narrow road. Whilst driving thru the crossroads he noticed the 'NO ENTRY' sign and promptly stopped. He then reversed back, hit a van before pulling forward again only to find a car in his path and we were completely stuck.
Not being able to move anywhere whatsoever, we remained here for approx 15 mins whilst the traffic built up on all 4 sides!
The locals were looking on in amazement while we were all laughing our heads off at how we could get into such a predicament.
Soon after, the rep informed us that the driver wanted us to lift the obstructing car and move it from his path.
Not being ones to halt the party we all got off the bus and bounced it a few yards down the road while one lad filmed the whole episode!
And on we went to our hotels to the tune of Ring Of Fire.

Unfortunately some scally robbed the camera on Tuesday night from Taksim Sq from the boys.
If anyone knows the whereabouts of the tape can you let me know - we aint that arsed about the £400 sony camera but the footage on there is priceless!
Cheers

Our taxi from the airport rounding the corner on a slip road to find a lone pedestrain ambling across the road.  There were three lanes, did the taxi driver try to avoid him?  Nope, put his foot down and drove right at him.  The fella didn't blink so the taxi had to slam on the anchors and come to a stop.  The fella carried on.

Me and Jon G bravely taking turns to sit in the front passenger seat of taxis.  No-one wore a seatbelt either in case we offended the driver  :o

Me pointing out the dangers of the bolts in the pavement to Scongil and then promptly falling over them.

On Tuesday night, Spartacus taking what remained of our kitty to the outside bar near Taksim (actually, heaven knows where it was really) and saying "can I have 7 beers for this".  She got them too  :o.  Next round, I went over with 5 Lira, the fella looked at his boss and he said yes, ok  ;D

Various humourous sightings of Zippy, boy was he having a good time  ;)

Waking up in the hotel each morning with absolutely no idea how I got there, thanks to everyone who assisted.

And last, but no-means least, Roger in the area outside the ground, doing his impression of the scarecrow from Wizzard of Ozz  ;D

As a young man Cameron looked out on the social carnage of pit closures and mass unemployment, looked at Margaret Thatcher's government and thought, these are my people. When all the debating is done, that is really all I need to know.
