Youri Djorkaeff ???? as a Red????
« on: February 6, 2002, 03:24:55 PM »
Another rumor in the never ending rumor mill! LOL Anyone want him? Would he fit? He certainly has a good touch and has fallen out of flavor with Kaiserslauten, he might just be available but...is he worth the price and space on the squad? Would he be another Smicer in the Prem? Don't get me wrong, I like Vladi's touch and skill but he gets pushed around too much in the Prem games for my liking, always getting knocked off the ball by stronger players...

I don't think he is the long term solution. We need to buy youth in carrick. Carrick Hamman and Gerrard with a creative midfielder in joe cole maybe?  :o

agreed about the long term solution...but it is an intriuging possiblity that his flair could support Owen and Anelka...after all, the best goal scorers need a good set-up man, and our best set-up man has been riding the bench (Jari)...Interesting since the arrival of GH, all the French players linked with Pool..

It wouldn't suprise me that Djorkaeff will join us. After all Le Boss has worked with him before in the French National team set up. Not forgetting that Djorkaeff admired Liverpool's style of play when he was a kid  8)

No, His career is now ending and we don't need players whose careers are coming to an end. Mcallister is a one off special diamond but this guy hasn't been the same player he was in 98 for a long time now.

He is best left where he is.

I can see him coming to Anfield if le Boss could pull another Anelka-style no-fee move, but otherwise not interested for all the reasons above.

Like you said that's the only reason that Djorkaeff will join us on a free transfer. Realistically it's a non starter.

I didn't mean too ruffle anyones feathers...just the rumor mill is always full of something? right? remember Zickler, Zidane, Cryuff and all the others that were supposedly coming to Anfield?

I am curious about one thing tho, why is age so important nowdays? I am over 30 and approaching 40 and it seems once footballers reach 25 they are termed "over the hill"?

We don't need Youri. We've got Jari.

About age; this is football, not chess! Do you know any player who has perform after 32? Ahh, Macca...;)  ;D

Aye gnurglan! ;) point taken about Youri but...is Jari 30? LOL. maybe thats why he is stuck on the bench? Is your opinion of Jari like mine in that when he does get the rare chance to play (minus Chelsea away, his play and teams play was abysmal!!!)he opens up the flanks and sprays the ball around with great effect? I seem to think Jari's days are numbered as a RED...

Please NO!

Not Jouri Djorkaeff, I've watched this guy play so many times and apart from the odd decent goal I see nothing of worth in the guy, especially as a midfielder without the build or ability required to win a premiership tackle.

Plus how many clubs have had him... quite a few and never for that long.  If he is/was that good a player you would have thought that one of his previous teams might have tried to hold onto him for a bit longer.

Over rated... YES!
Over here.... NO! please! I beg you!

Nap, to be honest, I am a little worried about Jari's future at LFC. Most of the times he has played, he has done great. But where do we play him? As a striker? Not really. Midfielder? Nope. He doesn't get back to defend as well as the others, does he? Somehow, we just don't seem to find a place for him.

What I like about the man is that he always tries to get involved. He wants the ball, he wants to get things going and he has the ability to open up any defence. IMO, he's exactly the kind of player we need when we play teams on the bottom half of the table, or when our opponents sit back.

Probably the best way to play Jari, is behind 2 strikers. (It's been said over and over again, I know). Give him a free role and I guess Berger, Hamann and Gerrard would have to be the 3 (narrow) midfielders behind him. We'd be short of width, unless we get our fullbacks forward. Vignal/Riise + Xavier/Wright (/Babbel!) would be OK, but Carra? No place for him then. (Sounds like a really crazy conclusion I've come up with here, play Jari or Carra?  :o )

I really hope we get to see a lot of Jari this spring. I reckon he may be the key to the title, this season's Gary Mac. :)

Gnurglan...I think you hit it right on the head! This has been discussed many times before, the "Where to play Jari" question, and I think right behind the striker(s) in a "roving" position is optimum...however, the downside is who gets replaced in the starting 11? Gerrard? NO WAY! Didi? NO! Spud? well LOL...ok maybe Spud LOL so...unless we do the 4-4-1-1 with Jari supporting Owen, Heskey or Anelka it means that someone is out...valid point about lower table teams or away games...

Is it true that Notlob (a Monty Python reference there ;)!) er, um I mean Bolton are interested in Youri? I remember Youri being a cog for Inter Milan (?) a few yrs back in serie A?

At last a quote from Monsieur Djorkaeff to end this matter:

France midfielder Youri Djorkaeff revealed on Friday that West Ham United have joined the host of Premiership clubs trying to sign him.

"They are one possibility among many others, although I can tell you that it won't be Arsenal or Liverpool now," he said. "The only certainty is that my transfer will be finalised by the beginning of next week. I am beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel."

Which is his way of saying 'they never wanted me in the first place but in using their names I got my desire to quit another club highlighted in the media, job done!'

Djorkaeff's contract has been terminated by Kaiserslautern today.

Sounds like Bolton are favourites to sign him.

On the subject of Jari, something I noticed at the weekend. When we scored one of our goals, the camera zoomed in on our bench. PT stood up smiling followed by a beaming Smicer, but Jari sat on the bench looking very glum and politely applauded. To put it frankly, he looked bloody miserable.

I don't understand why we bothered to sign him, unless it was purely as cover for the first choice forwards. Seems an absolute waste of a great talent.  :(

Well Steve_M i was discussing the Jari Litmanen situation with my younger brother and he reckons that it's deja vu i.e near enough the same situation that he endured at Barcelona.

Also if i can remember he was somewhow under-used at that club when Louis Van Gaal was boss at the club. I don't want to sound pessimistic, but i have a feeling that Jari's going to leave us at the end of the season  :( :'(.

But that depends of whether he gets enough games from now on until the final match of the campaign. Like you said Steve_M a great waste of talent

I also noticed Jari looking glum when we scored. It's extremely obvious that he'll be leaving during the summer, probably back to Ajax.

Why bother with these mediocre players even if they are for free.

Shell out a lot of money on a WORLD CLASS player.....

Or get a relatively unknown player for cheap who turns out (luckily) to be a real star (Hyppia)......

Or blood some of our kids coming through the system. :P

Nice point Steve_M! Jari's wasted on the bench...His generous spraying of the ball and playing inot space is something that our team needs, yes? Maybe thats why alot of us are confused with his predicament? we can see the benefits of him in the starting 11...I will note that some folks who are in the "know" told me his attitude and practice habits are not up to par...
