Anyone who knows anything about cars
« on: December 30, 2004, 08:53:07 PM »
Good - that means you know more than me.

Today I noticed that my front right tyre/suspension is creaking when I break. I thought it must be the break pad, but noticed when I went over bumps or round corners it was making the same noise. Is it just in need a WD40? What else could it be? The wheel seems to be on tight.

Any ideas?

Honda CRX 1991 1.5 Green Quite Camp if I'm honest!

It's not the bearing that's recently gone and been replaced and it's a totally different noise, more of a crunchy creak than a rolling creak! 8)

When you break hard, does the car lean to one side slightly?...If so, its probably a fucked shock...or could be binding brakes..but probably not.

It may just be a rubber bush on that has worn on the shock

Well I didn't notice that recently but did a couple of weeks ago. As I have 17" low profiles I just put it down to tyre pressure.

I only noticed the noise today, but that could have been because my CD player broke yesterday! :-[

Newer cars don't have asbestos brakes like the older cars do. So your brakes could be making noise from lack of asbestos and cold weather.  :wave :wave :wave

sounds similar to what I had a while back - the front struts could be buggered.  one (unscientific) way to check if it's struts is to push down hard on the front corner of the car and if the struts are ok, it should bounce back up fairly solidly - if the struts are fucked it will bounce back up a few times like jelly or my belly when I run down the pitch.   :wave

Can pick up Mondeos from N reg to about S reg for around 2K or less on autotrader.  Great run around cars or I would recommend sticking it through a fence  :wave

Have you tried just lifting it away from the glass incase its just got stuck, if not they are fairly cheap at Halfords or loads of places.  Just get it checked first incase its the motor that powers it thats knackered  :wave

Yeah, it got stuck to the glass when it frosted the other day. I'm afraid of taking it to the garage as they'll only find a million other things wrong with it. I think it's fair to say I drive a shitbox. :wave

AdamS.

Mate the way you describe the noise sounds to me like your anti-roll bar bushes are gone/going.  Try spraying WD around the bushes on both sides, it's an old car (no offence) and the likely hood they haven't been changed!

In an ideal world Adam try eliminating the simple things first therefore you'll save yourself some pennies and you'll have more beer tokens for tonight!

Good luck.

It's a 1987, 1.6  Golf GL.

I bought it for £400 in March. Since then, it's had a new clutch, new timing belt, new fan belt, new radiator hoses and all sorts of bits and bobs. All in all, it's cost me near on £900. Bonza. >:(

Oh yeah, I need to get four new tyres, a new offside headlamp, the heater's knackered and now it looks like I'll need a whole new wiper system. Tighten your belts children, Christmas is cancelled next year.

Hicks,if it's new tyres you are after,try here http://www.mytyres.co.uk/

I bought mine from the internet (x4) and paid about £88 each and got the local National tyres to put them on,valved and balanced for £20.National tyres were charging over £130 each fitted.Saved well over £100 on 4 new tyres.

If it's overheating change your thermostat, quick and cheap and may solve your probs.

If only one of your wipers is working, the splines may have gone on the motor arm or wiper blade. If so,use araldite to glue it on,it should hold OK.If it's your motor then the best think is to get a motor from a breakers.Shouldn't have much trouble for a Golf.

That's a great tip Keith- a new tyre costs me about the same as yours at National. Dread getting a flat  :(
I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool.
I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager.

It was only the fact of the silly prices I was quoted at the likes of National and Kwik Fit that I started to look elsewhere.Normally the cars I've had in the past, the tyres weren't that big,so you could get them fitted for around £50 each, but when you're talking £130+ each, you start to think of ways to save a bit of cash.

I've used the above site twice now and can't say I've had any probs with them, delivery takes upto a week because I think they come from Germany or Holland or maybe even the manufacturer.

Have always used em for my VW's and still do!
