Morientes can join LFC says Real
« on: December 19, 2004, 04:56:48 PM »
Taking from offal.

Real Madrid coach Mariano Garcia Remon has admitted Liverpool target Fernando Morientes can leave in the transfer window.

The arrival of former Liverpool striker Michael Owen at the Bernabeu and the departure of former coach Jose Antonio Camacho, who had specifically asked for Morientes to stay, have meant the striker has had to watch most of the season from the dug-out. Real are looking for £8 million but Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez will want to pay less.

"He is thinking of leaving, because he is getting very few minutes football and he wants to play," Garcia Remon said yesterday. "Morientes and the club have to look for the best solution."

Hmm, and where does Real/Manager say Morientes can join LFC?

Rafa in his post mafch interview was his usual non=committal self, though when quizzed about January he more or less confirmed he had buying targets.

Think Morientes is on to get his wish meself

Wouldn't that be ace :)

I won't be satisfied until I see Morientes on the Anfield turf with a Liverpool scarf over his head and Rafa holding the no.13 shirt for him.
I'd rather give him the number 37 shirt. I think it looks good with a mullet attached to it. We never saw enough of that shirt under GH.

Morientes - with something to prove and Baros up front, in our rediscovered 4-4-2. Mellor/FSP as backup. That'll go a long way to redressing our striker problem.

What about the player himself?

Last I heard, he was desperate to join Monaco. Has he expressed an interest in joining us?

Latest quotes (Friday) were that he'd be interested in a move to LFC.

I'm sure there'll be a few more interested parties. Our best hopes lie with Benitez and the other Spaniards.

I'd still prefer Anelka, but either of these two.

A few worries though! Are we sure Morientes is good enough? I mean obviously he's a good player, has done well for Spain and Real. BUT he's not getting a look in at Real and Monaco or other clubs are not coming in for him. What I really want is someone who wants to play for Liverpool and I just wish we'll sign someone who'll be an instant hit! Is Morientes better than for instance Anelka??

1.Yes, he's  without a doubt good enough in my view. Before the current Real president came in and started this whole "Galactico" philosophy, Raul and Morientes were untouchable up front together.
2. He cant get a lookin because ahead of him are the worlds best striker (Ronaldo), Reals very own living legend (Raul) and a marketing magnet who is also scoring goals (Owen)
3. Nobody else is interested? How do you know that? All you'll here is what the English media deems to be relevant. I'm sure theres a host of Spanish clubs who would love to sign a player of such proven quality, but you just dont get it rammed down your throat in this countey because La Liga is not on-topic.

Well Anelka is probably better with the ball in his feet and more of a traditional 10 than Moro and obviously he's a little younger, but Morientes air game is second to none and he is a good finisher with both feet and more of a tradional "9" and thats probably want Liverpool need right now.  The question is do you guys have the wingers that can produce the quality centers like Rothen did in Monaco? and another thing is he hasn't played much for Madrid so maybe he needs to get in good match shape...

Thanks Paul.

Morientes edges it for me after seeing him help knock Real out for Monaco. Still got a niggling doubt about Anelka's brothers etc.

Always wondered why Houllier didn't decide to keep him after his loan spell.

IMO Morientes is a typical and strong box player, very good in the air and scoring a lot of headers but he would rely on service from our wingers and their ability to put crosses in. I don't know if our wingers can deliver and that would be another aspect that Rafa and the boys need to work with. IF we sign Morientes that is! I dont really know if I prefer us to sign Anelka or Morientes. Anelka looks a good player and is proven PL class but on the other hand it's seems there's always some kind of a problem surrounding Anelka! Morientes or Anelka??? Kinell I'll just trust Rafa on this one.... 8)

I agree with all that. I prefer Anelka as he's proven quality in England, and is younger - Morientes won't have a sell-on value.

But I do like Morientes. He's great in the air, good on the deck, and scores goals.

I got a feeling we might get both. Buy Morientez and get Anelka on loan.

It would make sense considering Morientez cant play in the CL for us.

Cant see City letting their most valuable asset go on loan. They'll take a good fee for him in Jan, and they'll get offers for him too. No need to loan him out,

I'd prefer Morientes personally but would be just as happy with Anelka.

Is there a RAWK version of Colemanballs?  :D

My point on Anelka was that in three years he'll be worth £8m at least, but Morientes will be approaching 'free transfer' age. But three great years from Morientes, and it won't matter. He is just only in his peak years (generally seen as 27-31), but not sure when he turns 29.

Gerrard's comments on Anelka were interesting. As said elsewhere, there's no way City would loan Anelka out. They need him off the payroll AND a big fee for him.

If we just get Anelka, I will be very upset. For reason's I have made before, he adds nothing NEW to our squad in the mid-long term.

Morientes does.

It looks to me as if we have signed another 'average' player. I'll hold back my complete opinion until I see the lad play

I'd rather see both come. Milan's all-action style- and the fact he'll take a battering from defenders as the season goes on- means we are still light of options. Mellor has done well but he doesn't convince me as a long-term main man should anything happen to Baros.

EDIT- these words from Guillem Balague worry me a little...

"You must remember he rediscovered his form with a team that played in the French league and who used his strengths to a maximum, even allowing him to reinvent himself as a second striker. They are two things that won't happen in the case of Liverpool.

"He is a player that depends greatly on his mood. If he hits form and feels wanted, he delivers. If he feels the competition is too hard (he is not a physical player) or too fast (so he cannot use the movements he has learnt at Monaco) he may want to go home sooner rather than later.

"I doubt he will be a success in England, although I would play him at Madrid, especially now that Beckham is being used as a winger when the team is attacking. His crosses need El Moro's head."

Hmmmm.... we don't seem to get the crosses in at the moment, whether through Nunez' lack of match fitness or Harry's lack of confidence. I always felt Heskey would have benefitted from the type of ball an orthodox winger would give him. I don't have the stats to back this up, but it seems to me we score fewer headed goals than most Prem teams

I think Morientes will be a fantastic signing.. he's absolute class. can't believe people going on about his age... he's only 28, has good few years in him yet.

While Anelka is obviously a good player, and has youth on his side compared to Morientes, I would still rather sign the madrid man. Don't write him off as just "a box player" or the fact that he relies only on crosses... you obviously didn't watch him last season then... he can create goals just as well. His ability to find the net from anywhere is fantastic, he's big enough to win the headers, can create play, and a strong physical prescence that we lack up front. He'll bag loads for us in the 2nd half of the season, just a pity we couldn't use his experience for the champs league aswell- as I'm sure that'd be the perfect stage to show what he's all about.

Let's just hope he's not "off" form after sitting on the bench for so long, and can adapt to the premier league as quick as the horse.

Morientes is a 'proper' header of the ball - unlike Emile, who is just big. Emile is a pretty poor header of a ball - occasionally he'll get one on the meat of the forehead and it flew in, but his direction was nearly always pretty poor - for flick-ons and headers at goal. (Good defensively, mind, where you're not looking to aim it anywhere but AWAY!).

Morientes can hang in the air and get the power and accuracy. Just not sure how many crosses we'd get in, but having said that, Rafa likes two wingers, plus you've got Xabi and Stevie G crossing from deeper positions. Riise's crossing is erratic, but Finnan was always noted for his crossing at Fulham. With someone to cross to, there's more incentive for the team to get them in.

A bit of chicken-and-egg perhaps Paul? More crosses in to Morientes and he'll score goals, he scores goals they'll start whipping in more crosses?

Hmm.. almost sounding like he's already signed  :o

I'll be stoked with either Morientes or Anelka to be honest, I feel they are both world class and provide different options that will add to our team regardless.
