Phsyically speaking, thats a strong line up, with a lot of height. Think Rafa  must be expecting a dog fight?

Said Alonso would sit it out. Can't believe Josemi is in - at least he'll be fresh. Diao ...  :butt  (still, least he'll get stuck in!)

Rafa is deffo expecting a fight, decent aerial prowess!

No Baros a little odd, and Diao or Josemi will be sent off for sure!
It looks to me as if we have signed another 'average' player. I'll hold back my complete opinion until I see the lad play

Pongolle AND Mellor? Thought he'd leave one of them on the bench.

With Diao in, he must be thinking it's going to be a war...

He's gone for a solid side. Also Baros was never going to play so soon after his first game back. Hamstrings, when tender, need longer between matches.

maybe he wants something different on the right. obviously he is going for the tacklers and battlers in this game leaving xabi and milan out for diao and mellor as well.

Alonso could play a vital role from the bench.

Diao to be booked in ten mins - he is the weak link if you ask me.

Slightly concerned at that line up, although I guess its a physical team.

I always worry when Diao is in the team.

Flo to score the winner, 0...1 to us.

Rafa did say in the week Baros would probably be rested today. Don't want a repeat of last time with his hamstring. Hopefuly he'll be back on Tuesday. So many matches just now. Alonso probably needs rest too, but atleast he's there to be bought on fresh if needed. Maybe Pongolle and Mellor's trick of scoring straight after coming on off the bench will rub off on him.

He's in pretty poor form. Finnan isn't. But Josemi will at least be fresh.

Gonna be Pongolle on the right, surely, with Gerrard behind Mellor, as against Arsenal.

I don't get it really. Why not just let our football do the talking and keep Alonso in the team and Finnan who deserves to start. It looks like we're just ready to scrap it out with them today. I'm worried about us keeping eleven men on the pitch as well with Diao and Josemi starting.

Still, Benitez has obviously got a plan so may as well give him the benefit of the doubt...

He's been out for weeks so it's better to not rush him. We will play three games within next eight days so everyone will be used.

One things for sure - Rafa's certainly filling the fringe players and young strikers with confidence.  It can only make them play better when they know they have the trust of the manager, as opposed to just being in because someone is injured.  Would have been easy for rafa to play Kewellup front on his own, but instead he's sticking with form players

Maybe the plan is to let Diao and Josemi kick 7 shades of shite out of the opposition, so they are ineffective when he brings on Alonso to win the game.

Maybe. Am guilty of a bit of over analysis here, but maybe the plan is to stiffle the game for the first half? Hard thing to make happen though.

Can't sat i'm overly excitied by that line up - Diao in for Alonso?  Are we trying to lower ourselves to their standards of hard workers & water carriers (& thats being kind to Diao)

Why Josemi for Finnan too ???  He might be slightly fresher but he's surely a prime candidate for a red card.  Finnan has been much the better player this season at right back.

aye, nullify the threat od their yarddog midfield for 45, then bring on xabi and maybe djimi for a forward, push riise into midfield and kewell up front - kewell and pongolle running onto xabis passes in the second half could well be a route to success, maybe rafa realises xabi would just be the target of abuse as the blueshitw would surely try and kick him off the park if he played for 90?
