Aston Villa 1 Liverpool 1 - All post-game analysis here
« on: December 4, 2004, 05:05:39 pm »
A decent result, in a game we'd have won with a fit Baros. Villa have a great home record this year, so 1-1 is good, but disappointing after we'd led and been the better side.

Another slice of terrible luck with a decision for their goal.

come on - when we lost baros, cisse, and garcia all the doom and gloom merchants were saying we wouldn't score until after Xmas.  If someone had said 10 days ago "how about 4 points from the Arse and Vanilla matches" most of you would have taken that no problem.

Ok, heres some positives I took from the game. :)

Kewell did well, honest, seriously, I swear. Deserves a 7 - 7.5. Linked up well with Gerrad, showed more confidence and flair. Always an attacking threat. Scored a goal :)

Josemi did well too when he came on. Guess after the Monaco game, he got some sense knock into him. Tough Tackling, did not get caught out, but then Barry ain't got pace to burn, which is Josemi biggest problem. He should adapt to the pace in time though, and not commit himself to players like Duff Ronaldo etc..

Some observations.

We can't get much momentum going cause we keep losing out the aerial challenge.

Nunez still off the pace, will get there.

Alonso's standard dip a bit in recent games. Still class though.

Looking foward to monaco game :)

Viva Benitez!

I would have taken a point at the start of the day, however after our 1st half dominance it seems a bit like 2 points dropped.  I know we've got two absolutely huge games next week but I was disappointed in Rafa's subtistutions.

Good to see kewell getting a goal - maybe, just maybe it'll be the confidence booster he needs.

Its a must win next week against the blue shite (lucky twats  :upyours )

It's not a good result considering how dominant we were in the first half.

15 points off the top now and it's only December. Disappointing is all I can say. We absolutely have to beat Everton now next week, they're already nine ahead.

Oh and I can't wait for Baros to get back.

We need a good win to advance ;D not only to set us up for the Blueshite.
It's a bit worrying though :(  because we will be fighting in the CL meanwhile they just sit and watch and perhaps if we're tired they will get the benefit *touch wood*.

It looks to me as if we have signed another 'average' player. I'll hold back my complete opinion until I see the lad play

pissed off by a poor refereeing decision, but we have ourselves to blame too... we fail to bury teams, and usually concede a goal in those kinds of situation...Blackburn, Arsenal, Villa...
still some positive points, we played well, Villa are strong at home, and as mentionned before, with a fully fit Baros we can do very very well

Well done in the first half, many chances and Harry scored, congrats!

Nunez seemed to have been really good, to bad he missed the second half, which was, well, not THAT convincing. The freekick the lead to the draw was wrong according to the commentary, but that´s football.

Villa had a decent home record, but it sounds like we tore them to pieces. We didn't win, but if we play like that every week, (and this is at least the second league game in succession we've totally outplayed decent opposition), then we're set for glory. :)

Referee again.

We have got to start being more ruthless though.  We can't rely on every decision each game to be correct or go our way.

When we are so much on top, we have to have an end product. :(

Several times today the commentators said the wrong option was taken.  That's a lack of experience / class etc..
A travesty of a sham of a mockery.

Kirkland should have saved the solano freekick... End of. I think Jerzy would have saved it.

It seems more and more strange that Kirkland keeps his place in my eyes. Dudek has taken his chances well hasn't he?

This is not a knee-jerk reaction. It's just an obvious obsservation!

Just got back from watching the match at the boozer.

Missed the first 11-12 minutes because the first pub I went in couldn't get the fuckin' channel working.

Anyway.

First half, chances galore. The first 44 minutes, all I can describe them as is beautiful. Alonso, Gerrard, Hamann, Mellor were linking up superbly. Crisp, short, first touch passing was dominating precedings at Gerrard was at the heart of it. Backheels, Cryuff flicks, they were all happening and coming off, we were battering them and creating chance after chance. We got the goal, free kick 30 yards out bout 15 yards to the right, Gerrard stood it up far post, Carra nods it across goal and Kewell gets there just before Sorensen and puts us in front. A well worked goal. After that we were immense. It was the best football I've seen us play away from home for aaaaages. As I said, knocking it about short in midfield, with the occasional long pass from Alonso or Gerrard. Mellor forced a full-stretched save from Sorensen, Gerrard had 2 chances which he should have done better, the 2nd of which came about through awesome football, but he blasted straight at the keeper. Even Kewell was looking very lively, you could see the goal had eased a bit of pressure on him.

I was delighted with how things were going, Kirkland had not touched the ball, then McCann goes down from a non-existent challenge from Carragher. Carra knew it, McCann knew it, Halsey the prick however did not. Free-kick 25 yards out, goal. Half time, fucking pissed off, we'd battered them! Could so, so easily have been 3-0 at this point. Still pretty confident though if we could repeat that performance.

Second half though was a bit more even, although they still created zero. Apart from Kirkland tipping over another Solano free-kick. It was more of a midfield battle in the second 45, with a few half-chances for us from Kewell and Gerrard. One thing I didn't like though was Traore coming on for Mellor and playing left wing for the last half hour. Didn't really understand that with Riise at right back. Anyway, not much to report from the second half, just that we played quite well and shaded the half, but not much of interest happened.

Overall, quite disappointed with this one to be honest. Can't fault the lads, nobody had a bad game. We should have cruised this one, Villa were awful, no idea how they're unbeaten at home. Truly woeful.

Kirkland 6 - Nothing to do apart from the 2 free kicks and the occasional cross.

Finnan 6 - Steady. Right back in the first half, nothing to deal with. Second half right midfield, was solid, showed a decent first touch and put a few decent crosses in, including a quality ball with his left peg late on to Traore.

Hyypia 7 - Strong when needed, but hardly needed. Read the game very well a couple of times.

Carra 7 - Won quite a few headers, not tested otherwise. Strong when needed.

Riise 6 - Think he should be first choice left-back. Not really involved today though.

Nunez 5 - A few nice momenets, a few not so nice. Willing to take on the full back. Brought off at half time as a few thought he would be.

Hamann 6 - First half was good, like all in central midfield. Second half he gave the ball away far too much than we've come to expect from him.

Alonso 7 - Linked quite superbly with Stevie in the first half. Great mix of quick short passes, and raking long passes.

Gerrard 8 - All over the place today. Should have bagged himself at least 1 in the first half. He carried on from last weeks display today.

Mellor 6 - Linked up well in the first half with the midfield runners and should have scored. A lot of responsibility for him and his lack of pace showed at stages. Didn't let anyone down though. Off on the hour.

----------

Josemi 7 - On at half time and was very solid. Some good, hard tackles when needed.

Traore - 6 Came on at left wing and it didn't work to be honest, didn't really understand that one.

Pongolle - 6 Came on late, but looked lively and almost got free a couple of times.

Nothing at all against Mellor, but we would have won this game with Baros in the side, or a referee who can tell if its a free-kick or not from 5 yards away.

Five Live said Hamann went down far too easily for the free kick which led to the goal. But if there was contact then I'm sure Angel or whoever would've done the same. 1-1 doesn't seem a bad result just going off scorelines, Villa are a good side.

Kewell 7 - Big improvement from him today. You could just tell in the 10 minutes after he'd scored alone that it had made a difference. Linked up with Gerrard brilliantly a couple of times. Hope he carries this on now.

A decent result, in a game we'd have won with a fit Baros. Villa have a great home record this year, so 1-1 is good, but disappointing after we'd led and been the better side.

Another slice of terrible luck with a decision for their goal.

Before the game today i said i'd be more than happy with a point at Villa and i stand by that. Its never an easy place to visit and despite what some may or may not say, a draw is not the end of the world and a pretty decent result.

Glad to see Harry score today, hopefully he'll now go on a wee run and bang a few more in  8)

I look at it like this:

Away to a top three side - you can't expect any points, but a draw or win is a bonus.

Away to mid-table-to-near-top - a draw away is what we should be getting; a win is a bonus.

Away to struggling side - draw minimum (and possibly disappointing), should be getting a win.

At home, we *should* beat anyone but the very top sides, where honours may end up even (but you shouldn't be beaten).

So far our home form is exceptional (just one blip), our away form disappointing. But as noted earlier, four points from these last two games is damn good going - these were the first two games in our unenviable run of fixtures, and if you add Spurs in the cup in between, it's been a very good week indeed.

Apart from Boro, our away form has generally been a lot better in recent months. A lot of room for improvement, but today was a step in the right direction.

Saw him win a few, headed back into the centre channel.  I think putting him at LM was an inspired decision and almost paid off.  He's certainly got the pace, won the ball a few times, and stuck it in the middle to be picked up at pace.

Nowt funny about it...the lad played well

Kewell 7 - Big improvement from him today. You could just tell in the 10 minutes after he'd scored alone that it had made a difference. Linked up with Gerrard brilliantly a couple of times. Hope he carries this on now.

Harry did have a good game.  He got robbed a couple of time holding on to the ball for too long in the 1st half.  Defended well all match, and showing us his new 'get stuck in' approach.  One thing that I've been really impressed with him of late, is his ability in the air.  For a small fellar is winning a lot of headers, and sticking them in the right place.  He could have had a game winner for us though if he'd have hit it first time with his right drilled nearpost and low...keeper was no where near, but he seemed to need to shuffle to try and get a shot with his left, and ended up going with his right at the end anyhow.  Was frustrating, as Kewell is since being a Red...ticked all the boxes in every other department though...well done Harry!

seconded here

we seem to end up saying this so much, but if we had a fully fit squad we wouldnt be struggling like we are, especially away from home. 3 months into rafas reign, now is the time you could expect to see some results as the players get used to what he wants but we cant as our two main strikers are out.

when baros is fully fit again then we'll be back on form.

oh i, and we need to turn over them blue nosed wankers next weekend. id take a draw though...

Good analysis by Jimmy10Men.

This is the best I've seen Harry play all season.
