Liverpool 3 Palace 2 - All post-match comments here
« on: November 13, 2004, 04:56:07 pm »
Can't believe I wrote an article this week saying if Baros took penalties he'd have ten goals and not seven.

Today he scored two pens in a hat-trick, and has 10 goals!

 ;D

Xabi Alonso was fantastic in the second half. He just kept demanding the ball and spraying passes. He never panicked, even when it seemed the game was slipping away from us. Class act.

As for Milan, the man is a star. And Harry looked sharper, too.  :D

Finnan should start the next game in place of Josemi though, who looked poor from what I saw.

Releived more than anything about the result.

Sounded like we played well but missed a lot of chances (again  :no )  Definately looks like Milan has finally brought his Czech form to the red jersey.   Lot of pressure on the lad and he's coping fantastically.

Defence getting a bit of a glass jaw at the moment though which has to be a worry

Although Josemi is struggling at the mo, I think it's a team problem rather than the defence. Rafa keeps going on about how we need to concentrate for 90 mins and that's the problem - we switch off at times defensively.

We also need to be more clinical, but that will only come with more confidence and more strikers.

The main thing is, we're playing much better, much more incisive football under Rafa. Very encouraging.

I was watching this on bbc 1, with mcmahon doing the commentating. He looked so gutted when Baros put in the penalty for 3-2, I think his exact words were "Oh n...the keeper just got his hand to it". Apparently it's hard on palace because they showed so much heart.

Either way, the stats don't lie.

Possession:
Liverpool 56%
Crystal Palace 44%
Shots:
Liverpool 18
Crystal Palace 4
Corners:
Liverpool 7
Crystal Palace 1
Fouls:

Although Josemi is struggling at the mo, I think it's a team problem rather than the defence.

I respectfully disagree.  From in front of the TV it seemed to me that Josemi is currently playing out of synch with the rest of the defense.  His current bad behaviors include the following.

1. He hoofs rather than looks for the pass.
2. He fails to mark his man, and gets caught out of position, up the field, too far inside.
3. He looks pokey - when he gets beat in item 2 above, he is not recovering to cover.

Finnan to RB for a while, I think, until Josemi sorts it out and comes back stronger/faster/smarter/more disciplined.

On the other side, Djimi was very useful, although he looks gawky and uncomfortable.  He marked his man closely, he maintained concentration, and he recovered when we lost possession.  The athletic overhead kick in the first half was very impressive!

Gosh, I can't believe this match so tense. Apologize for my rant in the other post lads.

Glad we finally win, but I still have no idea why a team like Palace can get two goals at Anfield. Apart from Deportivo's match, it looks like we leak some goals whenever we cannot press the opponent constantly. Worrying indeed.

Anyway, got to sleep, it's 4.10 AM now here. See ya!

one of our best ever Penalty takers was a defender.  :wave

Yes we also went through that and i did phrase that a little off. The point being and the flow of what was said previously was mounted around the pen taker having the mentality (which i heard Shearer say in an interview in particular) about not even thinking about missing, as a striker he scores goals and knows he can score one on one. For that reason i didn't want to see anyone other than Milan take the pens.

Yes you get your odd other player who can stick them away but looking at our current team i wanted Milan to be that man and i think its important that our striker(s) feels confident enough to adopt that same mentality.  Follow me?

Thing with Palace is that they were the third most in-form team in the league going into this game (based on last 6 games).

That penalty on 90 minutes was a big pressure one, as it dictated whether we won or whether we had a really disappointing result.

But what the heck - we won!  :scarf

This is true!

5 - Kirkland: Not much to do, and I wonder whether he could have stopped the first goal.

4 - Josemi: Played hard but out of synch, lacked the culture the rest of the team is exhibiting.  Lost headers.
7 - Carra: Did well with the ball at his feet, played the ball out of defense nicely.
7 - Hyppia: Escaped a likely red card with the one tackle and still not going to win the 100-yard dash, but great in the air and composed on the deck.
7.5 - Djimi: Very disciplined in defense, got forward constantly to good effect.  Still looks funny, but effective and touches of class, and only one misplaced pass.

6 - Garcia:  In and out, with a brilliant touch and pass followed by some stuff that didn't work.  Better in the first half.
5 - Didi: Ref didn't like him much, to judge from the calls he didn't get.  Very tight, but not as aggressive/proactive as he could have been.
7.5 - Alonso: His touch in the first half was too heavy on several occasions, but when he got it right it was very nice indeed.  Hustled, didn't hide.
6.5 - Riise:  Very aggressive first half, and got into the right positions again and again.  Created a lot of worry for Palace in the first half, very disappointed to be subbed but still clapped the crowd.

7 - Kewell: Combined well with Riise, Milan, Garcia throughout, accurate crosses, hustled hard in the first half.  Cushioned Alonso's ball back across the goal for Milan's second, unlucky not to score himself.
9 - Milan: Like the Energizer Bunny out there, he drew multiple fouls and should have had another penalty in the first half.  He even pulled the ball back for Garcia and Kewell three times in the second half, although still not 100% on vision and awareness.  Strong penalties, opportunistic goal from open play.

6.5 - Finnan: Lots of possession ball, tricks and accurate crosses.  I was never worried when he had the ball, ad I knew he would make the right decision.
X - Mellor: Got into good positions in the ten minutes he was on, but not on long enough.
X - FSP: 83 seconds on the field.

4 - Referee: Made a lot of wrong decisions in the first half
6 - Anfield: Impressive singing through most of the match over the TV - hopefully it was not the away supporters singing FOAR.
6 - Palace: Did themselves a lot of credit, with Ian Dowie putting out a disciplined if limited team.
Nineteen, we want nineteen.

Positives:
Milan - in a class of his own tonight.

Alonso - Good as usual
Djimi - positive going forward as well
Kewell - apart from his "usual self" nowadays, he produced a couple of very good crosses, gave an assist for milan, and put him through for the last pen as well. Improvment!
Riise - Is getting himself into scoring positions in the box all the time. Doesn't always get the ball, but he IS there.. Had a couple og decent passes, and a few attemts at goal as well.
Carra - Play simple and you play good. COuld have scored as well  :o

Negatives:
Josemi - Needs a kick up his backside. Struggeling again.
Sami - Lucky to not get bookedas last man, and was again fault for not holding the line at the back four. I see signs with Sami I don't particulary like..
Kirkland - Gives me no confidence at all. Could have saved the first one. Communicates poorly it seems with his defence (the situation with Sami)
Garcia - A bit lightweight again, and falls out of the match.

Fuck me that late penalty was important. I don't think it's a good idea to let a player take two penalties in the same match. And I don't think Milan is a penaltyshooter...

I was sweating at the end.

But now it's happy days, and I'm going out to celebrate.. :)

Post Match Thoughts

Kirky - couldnt do much about the goals.
Josemi - poor on the goals. came inside far too much, not effective going forward.
Sami - alright, troubled a bit by the midfielders supporting freedman, and DID play the left winger onside for the second goal.
Carra - got into a good scoring position early on, was solid but rocked a little by Palace's physical play
Troare - good game again. looked good at the back, did ok going forward
jAR - looked tired early on but then got into it in the second half, some good crosses and shots. unlucky to be subbed
hamman - poor game. poor with his distribution, but at least he put himself about
alonso - always wanted the ball, always looked a class player.
garcia - didnt really get into the game, but did have a great chance to score at the end of the first half
kewell - much better, set up baros to score and then sent him away to win the second penalty. looked like he cared. nice.
baros - massive performance.

finnan - some decent crosses, def should get a start ahead of josemi
mellor - too little time to judge him
same for pongolle

igor - legend  ;D
