Question: Which 3 Players Would You...
« on: February 22, 2002, 02:09:50 PM »
Which 3 Premiership players would you like to add to our first team in order to make us (undoubtedly) the best team in the land? (Or do you think that there aren't 3 players that could improve us?). This is not designed to be disrespectful to players we have.

Personally, I'd add Pires to our right of midfield, Rio Ferdinand alongside Sami (not that I'm unhappy with Henchoz in any way, just that I think we could use Ferdinand's pace and his superior use of the ball - of course, this is assuming that Ferdinand and Sami could strike up a similar understanding).

I'd maybe get a new full-back, but for the sake of this we have to assume Markus will return, and Markus on one side and Xavier, Carra, Wrighty, Vignal or Riise on the other is more than good enough (how many full backs can one side want?). So no need there...

Without committing heresy, I thought about adding Ryan Giggs to our left of midfield (this is coming from someone who always does shit in Fantasy Football because I refuse to buy Mancs - I can't stand the thought of hoping they scored points, but I think we can be mature enough to suggest we'd be happy to have some of their players at Anfield, just as they'd want Dudek, Sami, Stevie G and Mickey. Anyone suggesting we sign the Neville brothers will be advised to seek psychiatric assistance). But Riise does an excellent job on our left and if Paddy B rediscovers form and fitness, I'm more than happy there, with Pires offering the skill and pace on the other side.

So it would have to be Thierry Henry up front with Mickey, simply because the two of them have scary pace, and because Henry doesn't make the same runs as Mickey - he drifts out wide and takes players on, whereas Mickey uses his pace more centrally. Henry works very hard, so he'd fit in with our style.

Pires. He has been brilliant this season, and could play almost any role across the midfield.

Beckham. Hasnt had the best of seasons, but is a class player.

Henry. Our 2 partnerships could be Owen and Henry and Heskey and Anelka. Scary.

Yeah, I'd go for Pires. Him on the right with Gerrard, Hamann and and Berger/Riise on the left would probably be my first choice midfield but apart from him I can't think of any other players that stand out as to be in a team I would select if it were up to me.

Doesn't Pires play on the left? He is excellent though.

I would personally keep Stephane over Ferdinand. RF still has a long way to go before you can consider him a reliable defender.

It's midfield where we need something extra. And I still think we haven't got a reliable goal-scoring alternative to Mickey.

If we're really talking Cannibis-Inspired Fantasy Football I'd go for

Beckham (his rapport with both MO and SG is pretty impressive)
Kewell
Van Nistelrooy

But there is something vaguely distasteful about thinking about this way...

Robert Pires for sure, speed, passing and a killer cross, and he can score as well, that means Giggs is out of the question, why buy 2 (expensive) players for the same position ?

Rio Ferdinand I also agree has become one of the best defenders in the land after joining Leeds, he even suppassed Sol Campbell the way I see it.

For the third player I would like to go to the Primera Division in Spain and bring an old friend back, Steve Mc Manaman that is because I rate him as one of the most technical players England has ever seen (O.K, I didn't forget Keegan, Beardsley, Hoddle, Barnes and maybe even Brooking and Beckham though the last lacks vision about the game, I think) He has become world class at Real Madrid but it seems it is a bit too much to compete with players like Zidane and Figo (just to name two) recently.

But it had to be a Premiership player, hmmm...........   Let me think......

Van Nistelrooy, Kewell, Ash Cole, Henry ........  Don't know.

What I do know and what sort of pisses me off is the way Ziege is playing this year for Tottenham. But we don't want him back now, do we ?

Ah, fuck it, let's get Fowler back !  ;) ;D

I think Shaky is right... this is all a bit sick, not least because of the three players I've come up with here:

Beckham
Kewell
van Nistlerooy

:puke:

OK, assuming I've got over the fact who they play for... I'd keep Henchoz and Hyypia over any other pairing. I'd not tamper with our back four at all (OK, I'm also assuming Babbel will be back).

It's the flanks where we need more. Riise could be the buy of the season but at the moment Kewell is one of the few Premiership players to be able to go past people... and we've not seen that at Anfield since Johnny Barnes.

Beckham ahead of Pires on the right simply because I think he'd fit in with our 4-4-2 style better. He also has the understanding with Owen and Stevie G...

Then I don't think we need a third at all... but if it's a third I'm allowed the Van's the Man. He's looked sharp all season (sadly) and although Heskey might play better with Owen, it's goals we missed over Christmas and he'd have given them to us.

I'm off to cleanse myself now.
Bastard question if ever there was one Paul.

Definitely Giggs - could walk into any team in the world in my opinion, although I know a lot of people wouldn't agree.  He could play on the left.   Not prepared to say Beckham or Bowyer and not altogether sure about Pires on the right.  One better bet might be Nolberto Solano (better in that it might actually happen one day) - very good all round player, like a better version of Danny Murphy.

Think we need some guile behind the front player(s) - Jari isn't up to it in my opinion (cue Jari-arse-licking rhetoric).  Not too many players like that around though.  Cantona or Beardsley a while back.  Bergkamp or Zola more recently.  But now?  It's hard to think of too many of those type of players.  Sad really.

You can't break that defence up, the goalie's great, Hamann/Gerrard looks good enough and I want Emile Heskey's babies.

Anyway, only Giggs for me really.

Id take Pires over Giggs any day. Giggs is often injured, and I have always seen him as inconsistent, whereas pires this season has been brilliant. His final ball and finishing are better than Giggs IMO, and I reckon he could play on the right, or in the middle as well. Seen him play centrally for France a few times in the Petit (when he was good at Arsenal) role, and he has impressed me there as well.

Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink- Great goalscorer always looks dangerous and isn't half bad at set pieces either.

Robert Pires- For the reasons already mentioned.

David Dunn- Great Player, Scores Goals, Can take people on and can get a tackle in as well.

Ah well no Mancs this time.

For some reason, I couldn't name Van Nistelrooy - not sure why. He's clearly (gallingly) a class act... but he looks like a horse.

Pires plays on the left only in the line-up - he's everywhere. So no harm sticking him on the right.

It's funny, no one has picked a player outside of the top sides, bar David Dunn (an excellent player) and Joe Cole (pure class but lacks experience - will be a 'great').

Does this suggest that the top sides (down to Chelsea and Leeds in the table) have all the real class? There are a lot of players I like throughout the table (Dunn, Jansen, Malbranque, Joe Cole) but I guess the real class is almost exclusively at the top.

Ledley King or Titus Bramble for central defence

Stephen Carr or Mario Melchiot for an attacking right back

Kieron Dyer or Freddie Ljundberg to spice up the midfield/attack

The first names listed being my preferred choice; Carr, King and Dyer could play at any level in any team.  Players worth breaking the bank for.

What I would like to see more than any of the above arriving at Anfield is the likes of Wright, Traore, Partridge and others proving themselves to be the perfect alternatives.

Or 3 players not from the bigger sides,

David Dunn- Reasons- As I said before

Wayne Bridge- Linked with him earlier in the seasson, Young,Quick, Good Crosser of the ball, Plays predominantly wide but can cut back inside well.

Carrick- Don't think I need to explain why, Bound to become a Great player.

Okay, 3 from lesser teams:

Joe Cole. Wonderful player, the sort who could really help us out when teams pack defences and midfield @ Anfield. If we got him, no need for Dunn, who is also a good player.

Michael Carrick. Class, similar to Didi, but great cover, and an eventual replacement.

Darius Vassell/Jermaine Defoe. Both full of skill and potentiol. Both excellent cover for Owen. Jansen is class as well.

Ledley King, Steve Carr and Wayne Bridge also quality.

Harry Kewell would provide us with left wing width and also more creativity.

Joe Cole is another with an abundance of creativity and skill.

Finally, Trevor Sinclair on the right wing.

Robert Pires (IMHO he's been the best player in the premiership this year)

Vieira (the fully motivated version as opposed to the disinterested version seen this season)

Kieron Dyer (a fantastic young player and both him and Pires are very versatile as to where they play).

Good question, lot of good suggestions, after a lot of thought id go for...

Kieron Dyer
Robert Pires
Laurent Robert

Ok, well those three are all wide midfielders who we could probly more realistically sign. If it was no money and could actually have ANYONE then itd be

1. Beckham
2. Vieria
3. Hasselbaink

Id have to say:

Joe Cole
Kieron Dyer
Freddie Ljungberg ( i think he is better than Pires )

Thing is, these are all midfielders and they would end up being squad players. Stevie G and Didi are set in stone in the middle, so that leaves them to battle it out for the other places. I wouldnt swap our defence or attack for anyones.

I think the point here is that a lot of players have been suggested (King, Carrick, Van Nistelrooy for example) who are just different versions of what we already have.  Henchoz, Hamann and Owen are better than those three in my book.  The only thing that would radically improve our side is two wide midfielders, and that for me would be two of Giggs, Pires and Beckham (probably the two Mancs).

I think Nistelrooy is a totaly different sort of player compared to Owen.  Almost all his goals come from inside the 6 yard box.  He has an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time, and is a wonderful finisher, and besides, and as Paul Tomkins said...he looks like a horse, nothing at all like Owen ;D

...would say hasselbaink, as he is the best finisher possibly in the world, though there isn't that much more to his game (in my opinion) and his attitude may not go down that well @ Anfield.

if we could have 4, he would be me 4th.

I think Van N would compliment MO very well. We don't yet have our goal-scoring problems sorted out. We are too reliant on Lil' Mick. Emile is wildly inconsistent, Anelka hasn't really got going yet, Baros is obviously categorised as "one for the future" and Jari is The Forgotten Man.

But this is a real Fantasy Football thread. In all honesty I think we have the squad to maintain a title challenge (although probably not win it). Then with Ged back we'll probably sign a couple of players in the summer. But they won't be superstars like Pires or Van N, they'll be talent that Ged or one of his men have spotted. I doubt we will spend more than 10 million on one single player for a few years. Most of the squad we have is on an upward curve.

Things can only get better...

(Truly throwing a cat amongst the hamsters...)

Seems though this is hypothetical...

If we could:

Rewind the clock to just before Roy Evans took over

Erase our brains of any previous associations

Would yous...

No, because by that time he was *already* associated with the Mancs.

What you have to remember about Roy Evans is that we needed somebody to steady the ship and provide continuity after Souness. Roy was perfect in that regards. The fact that he was then "too soft" for the "Spice Boys" era shouldn't count against him. Perhaps if he'd had Thommo beside him to lay down the Law...

But here's an interesting scenario for the beginning of 1994 - the Manager of France has just resigned after they failed to get to the World Cup. Rumour has it that he's close to Peter Robinson and that he used to stand on the Kop in the 60's when he was a teacher in Liverpool. What do you think - should we get him in?  :D
