I've added match dates as well...

Each group will consist of a team from each of the pots, baring in mind you cannot draw an English team i.e No Man U or Arsenal from Pot 1. Chelsea and Liverpool both in pot 2 can't be drawn together anyway.

Variety adds spice to draw

Champions League draw procedure
Thursday, 26 August 2004
Thirty-two teams will be divided into eight groups of four when the draw for the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League takes place at 16.00CET today at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.

Conditions
The eight groups will be lettered A to H, and there are a number of conditions that will be observed:

Teams from the same country will not be drawn into the same group.

Teams from the same association will have their matches split between Tuesday and Wednesday. Teams will be paired, based on the TV audience and taking account of the provisions of the competition regulations concerning stadiums, when an association has more than two entrants.

The pairings are as follows: Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona; Valencia CF and RC Deportivo La Coruña; Manchester United FC and Arsenal FC; FC Bayern München and Werder Bremen; AC Milan and Juventus FC; Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC; AS Roma and FC Internazionale; Olympique Lyonnais and Paris Saint-Germain FC; Olympiacos CFP and Panathinaikos FC; AFC Ajax and PSV Eindhoven; FC Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Dynamo Kyiv.

For the purposes of the draw the clubs will be placed into four pots according to their coefficients. Pot 1 will comprise last year's winners, FC Porto, and the top seven clubs in the club coefficient rankings. Pot 2 will comprise the following eight clubs in the rankings, and so on for Pots 3 and 4. Click here for the groups in full.

To ensure that clubs from the same country play on separate days, the eight groups will be distinguished by colour: groups A to D will be red and groups E to H blue. When a paired club is drawn, for example, into one of the red groups (A, B, C or D), the other paired club - once it has been drawn - will automatically be assigned to one of the four blue groups (E, F, G or H).

The red groups and the blue groups will play in two different match sequences, either :

Tuesday / Wednesday / Wednesday
Tuesday / Wednesday / Tuesday
or
Wednesday / Tuesday / Tuesday
Wednesday / Tuesday / Wednesday

Draw procedure
The process will begin with a red ball being drawn from Pot 1. The ball will be opened to display the name of the team and a computer will show the available groups for this club. A green ball will then be drawn to determine which of the available groups the selected team will be allocated to.

Once all the teams have been drawn from Pot 1, the same procedure will be repeated for the teams in Pots 2, 3 and 4, in that order. Teams from Pot 1 will be provisionally placed in the first position within their groups, teams from Pot 2 will provisionally take the second position in their groups, and so on.

Once the draw procedure has been completed, a computer draw will determine the final position of the teams within their group. Due to climatic conditions, Rosenborg BK and PFC CSKA Moskva will be assigned position 1 or 3 to allow them to play away on Matchday 6.

These positions within the group will then determine the order of the home and away matches according to the competition regulations. The 96 group matches will be played on the following dates: 14-15 September, 28-29 September, 19-20 October, 2-3 November, 23-24 November, 7-8 December.

so Carol, I'll have one from the top, one from the second bottom, and one from the bottom please...

(hoping for Bayern, Anderlecht and CSKA  ;D, except we all know fucking united will get that group...)

who d'yer want then?

Madrid, Liverpool, Monaco and Fenerbache has a scary sound to it...

Wonder how Rafa will feel if we get Valencia in our group? I bet he'd get the players fired up for that one, they's have to be! And for that matter the atmosphere would almost certainly be something else...

How about real madrid, us and ajax, that'd be a lot of european cup winners in one group.

have any of group 4 won the european cup?

Christ I didn't realise pot three was so strong, ideally we'll get a fairly easy team out of pot one if we are to get a hard team from pot three.

Deportivo would be an excellent draw, they looked piss poor against Shels last night. And this is Shels like, who's ground's exits are lined with cow shite.

there's teams on your list that won't qualify tonight  though - at least 2 of
Rangers Juve PSV  Sparta Trabzon

(personally I think at least 2* of - but hopefully nearly all of their opponents - CSKA Moscow*, Djurgarden*, Red Star Belgrade*, Ferencvaros, & Kyiv will qualify)

*I've put bets on these 3 to qualify (though being already £90 up on the CL qualifiers this week does not ease the pain of last night. They were 'value' bets rather than predictions. Just like last night's  :-\   )

Don't mind who we get as long as it's Spanish from pot 1 and an "exotic" team, preferably Shaktar from pot  4 & that I can make it to the games

A reminder as well that, if either Real or the Mancs fail to qualify tonight AC Milan will rise to Pot 1 and everybody else moves up one.

If both go out then we will be in Pot 1 as well (but I can't see them both slipping up)

As you say this is EXTREMELY unlikely - I'd say  2,000-1 - but though it would be very FUNNY it would also be a pisser cos then we couldn't play anyone Spanish & I reckon Rafa would  enjoy playing 1 of the 4 Spanish teams  & so would ALL our Spaniards ... as things stand we have a  57½ % chance of drawing a Spanish team

People seem to fancy playing Bayern in terms of easiest to beat - have they fallen that far?

How strong will they be this season? Have they spent well?

Someone said Pot 3 looks strong, and it does, but I guess that's the point - there are never too many "easy" looking teams in the draw. Dutch and French sides look good on paper these days, but we should be capable of beating teams from these countries; same with Germany (usually Bayern excluded).

The Italians don't bother me too much these days. Spanish teams always give us the hardest games, so at least we have insider-info with Rafa and his backroom staff - and the players themselves.

Paul, I actually fancy Bayern as a good bet for the Champion's League this year, and I have said as much in the bets thread. They are really very good. My reason for wanting to draw them is, as Millsee as perceptively spotted, for the Oktoberfest, even if it does put hotel and travel costs up a bit. Plus I've got a long-term guaranteed shag out there. But, unlike the beer, I'm unwilling to share that experience (honestly though, she's something else...).
