Champions League draw procedureThursday, 26 August 2004
Thirty-two teams will be divided into eight groups of four when the draw for the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League takes place at 16.00CET today at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.
ConditionsThe eight groups will be lettered A to H, and there are a number of conditions that will be observed:
Teams from the same country will not be drawn into the same group.
Teams from the same association will have their matches split between Tuesday and Wednesday. Teams will be paired, based on the TV audience and taking account of the provisions of the competition regulations concerning stadiums, when an association has more than two entrants.
The pairings are as follows: Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona; Valencia CF and RC Deportivo La Coruña; Manchester United FC and Arsenal FC; FC Bayern München and Werder Bremen; AC Milan and Juventus FC; Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC; AS Roma and FC Internazionale; Olympique Lyonnais and Paris Saint-Germain FC; Olympiacos CFP and Panathinaikos FC; AFC Ajax and PSV Eindhoven; FC Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Dynamo Kyiv.
For the purposes of the draw the clubs will be placed into four pots according to their coefficients. Pot 1 will comprise last year's winners, FC Porto, and the top seven clubs in the club coefficient rankings. Pot 2 will comprise the following eight clubs in the rankings, and so on for Pots 3 and 4. Click here for the groups in full.
To ensure that clubs from the same country play on separate days, the eight groups will be distinguished by colour: groups A to D will be red and groups E to H blue. When a paired club is drawn, for example, into one of the red groups (A, B, C or D), the other paired club - once it has been drawn - will automatically be assigned to one of the four blue groups (E, F, G or H).
The red groups and the blue groups will play in two different match sequences, either :
Tuesday / Wednesday / Wednesday
Tuesday / Wednesday / Tuesday
or
Wednesday / Tuesday / Tuesday
Wednesday / Tuesday / Wednesday
Draw procedureThe process will begin with a red ball being drawn from Pot 1. The ball will be opened to display the name of the team and a computer will show the available groups for this club. A green ball will then be drawn to determine which of the available groups the selected team will be allocated to.
Once all the teams have been drawn from Pot 1, the same procedure will be repeated for the teams in Pots 2, 3 and 4, in that order. Teams from Pot 1 will be provisionally placed in the first position within their groups, teams from Pot 2 will provisionally take the second position in their groups, and so on.
Once the draw procedure has been completed, a computer draw will determine the final position of the teams within their group. Due to climatic conditions, Rosenborg BK and PFC CSKA Moskva will be assigned position 1 or 3 to allow them to play away on Matchday 6.
These positions within the group will then determine the order of the home and away matches according to the competition regulations. The 96 group matches will be played on the following dates: 14-15 September, 28-29 September, 19-20 October, 2-3 November, 23-24 November, 7-8 December.
