Women's Super League
« on: September 25, 2022, 02:44:23 pm »
After the success of the Euro's, more games on TV and fantastic attendances, the WSL probably deserves it's own thread.

Some decent games on today with Chelsea v City at 4 followed by the Merseyside Derby at 6.45.

Both games being broadcast on Sky Sports

Everyone is fully aware none of the keepers are as good as Alisson, or any of the players as skilful as Salah or as dominant in defence as van Dijk, so leave those kind of comments on Twitter please.

It's the same clubs though. It's just becoming another money spinner/publicity for the men's teams, particularly with big crowds at their home stadiums.

Chelsea v Man City live on Sky Sports. The joys. You'd rather the WSL had independent clubs free from the men's game altogether.

I find non league a better alternative to the horrors of the modern PL.

On the plus side you can watch a Merseyside derby without all the toxicity and general nastiness and unpleasantness (same with the women's games in general). It's more family friendly and something you can take your kids to and affordable to boot. For now at least there's even no VAR and you actually get to watch some football rather than at least one team spending the match not playing football by wasting time all game.

As a league though it's still the same bullshit while under the umbrella of the men's teams and the people who own them. I.e. the same sports washing for despotic regimes.

Interesting post match with Jonas. Arsenal not happy because Ajax tried to make the goals 10cm smaller tonight. Arsenal picked up on it in the warm up and they were changed back.

Looks like she is going nowhere. Arsenal even went back with a higher offer and United still prefer to hold on to her and (possibly) let her leave for nothing in the summer.

It sounds crazy on the part of both teams, really. But they will see her as being vital to securing CL qualification, which would net them roughly the same amount of money as the fee on the table - so as crazy as it sounds for United to turn down 500k & for Arsenal to be offering that much for a player imminently out of contract, it also makes perfect sense to say no thank you & and to want to spend so much.

Emma Hayes has been having one too many Cobham brunches with Boehly...
Quote
Women's football in England should be "open" to the idea of a closed league, says Chelsea manager Emma Hayes.

The Women's Super League in England, as with other European leagues, operates on a traditional promotion and relegation system.

In contrast, the National Women's Soccer League in the United States is a closed league featuring the same teams, or franchises, each season.

"I've worked in that in the United States," said Hayes.

The 46-year-old - who previously managed the Chicago Red Stars in the NWSL - added: "I like the idea of relegation and promotion from a traditional perspective, but it doesn't mean we should be hamstrung by it. We should be open about it.

"I've seen the successes of promoting franchise-type leagues and the consistency that that can then place in running that. Look at the WNBA [Women's National Basketball Association] as a great example.

"We should be open to everything, and everything shouldn't always be compared just because it's traditional or just because of the men's game.

"I think we should have an openness about reflecting on the pluses and minuses."

Hayes is a contributor to a major national review of women's football which will examine issues affecting the game at elite and grassroots levels in England.

The findings of the review, chaired by former England midfielder Karen Carney, are expected to be published this summer.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64648506
(original comments are from The Athletic, but they have spread to a hundred other articles because they're being laughed at so much)

I hope she hasn't got too much influence over the review because this isn't the first time she has come out with proposals for changes to the women's game that you'd be hard-pressed to find anybody else advocating for. The WSL has been closed before. It started that way. I've never once heard a person say the introduction of promotion/relegation was a mistake. I've seen it said that the particulars of how the WSL went about that introduction could have been better, but the division being opened was universally approved of. Closing it again is the wrong solution to the issues that she is identifying.

It's especially stupid because in effect the WSL is still "settling". The top division clubs now are far from guaranteed to still be the top clubs in 10 or so years time, especially when success is still dependent on club owners focusing on it and funding things.

Absolutely nope to the closed shop wsl.Would there be any interest in the team this season if we were just playing out the stretch instead of looking over out shoulders at relegation? I get the franchise shite works in America they are talking about $ 50 million fee for a new Boston team for 2025,kaching for the NWSL.But it's a sterile product they offer.
