I've been watching Ashes to Ashes recently, and thought the behaviour of the police in the 80s was exaggerated. Police brutality, changing reports, masonic lodges and handshakes and keeping everyone sweet....but the more I read of today's evidence, the more I see that's how it was. Unbelievable. people, no matter their standing, need to be brought to justice for this.

'Patnick is on the right wing of the Conservative Party. He was against sanctions on apartheid South Africa, voted to reintroduce the death penalty, strongly supported Section 28 and, in a similar vein, opposed reducing the age of consent for homosexuals. He coined the phrase 'People's Republic of South Yorkshire' in reference to the policies of the Sheffield City Council under the direction of David Blunkett'

Should be stripped of his knighthood, his OBE and made to stand trial for corruption.

The problem will be finding a judge who isn't in the pocket of the people who have perpetrated this disgraceful cover up, if it even gets that far. I'm quite sure that Patnick has an insurance policy up his sleeve in case the establishment hangs him out to dry, these bastards always do, but fuck 'em lets go for their throats and punish them the way they have punished the families, the survivors and the people of Merseyside. The tide has turned and the families are now at last in the ascendancy we all need to up our support for whichever course they decide on and bring this disgraceful episode to its rightful conclusion     JUSTICE FOR THE 96

I've managed to get this thread retweeted to over 35,000 people in the last 90 minutes.

I've tweeted John Mann MP and asked him how we can support his demand for Patnick to be stripped of his knighthood.

This man perpetrated the original lie that went around the world. He was either misled by senior police officers or he colluded with them. Either way he has a case to answer in a court of law.

NY Times, April 16th 1989:

http://www.nytimes.com/1989/04/16/world/93-are-dead-after-a-crush-at-soccer-game-in-england.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm

Some politicians said today that an identity-card scheme might have helped prevent the tragedy. ''It would mean that even those who surged in as they did today would be identifiable,'' Irvine Patnick, a Conservative Member of Parliament, told the Press Association.
...

Almost-local MP, first using the disaster to tout Thatcher's pet ID scheme (from Hansard snippets, he was a key supporter of the scheme); then to coverup for SYP. Rotary, masons, local connections, sure. I get the feeling Patrick may have been Bernard Ingham (and therefore Thatcher's) man on the ground to protect SYP - an organisation that had it's own 'hold' on the Tory government after being used politically (and extremely dubiously) at 5 years earlier.

Today, truth.
Tomorrow, justice for the 96.

Patnick has a clear case to answer. I hope he gets his day in court.

lets use the govt petition system for this - 100k - shouldn't be a problem.

I've got a page set up, with a basic explanation.

Quote
We the undersigned demand that the government strips Irvine Patnick not just of his knighthood and OBE - but any pension that he has picked up from the taxpayer since leaving Parliament in 1997.

This is due to the lies that he helped to spread in co-horts with the South Yorkshire Police and The Sun Newspaper in the aftermath of the Hillsborough Disaster on the 15th April 1989, as proven by the Hillsborough Independent Panel on the 12th September 2012.

What do people think of that as a wording, get it spread on twitter and everywhere else?

Needs to be held to account and also needs to reveal who the officer(s) were who told him.

Patnick:

The e petition has been cancelled.  Something about them not being allowed to discuss honours.  Perhaps you might want to amend it to somehow debate his role in the affair and his briefings to the media, ie, the S*n?  Nice bit of public shaming in parliament might be enough for action.

Why not take the Honours thing out of your proposed petition :

"We the undersigned do resolve and request that that the elected representatives of the good tax-paying citizens of Great Britain do debate and resolve whether former Member of Parliament, Sir Irvine Patnick, O.B.E. did bring Parliament into disrepute by his actions, when in 1989 and thereafter he did circulate, repeat and publicise untruths of an insensitive, offensive and defamatory nature relating to the incident known as 'The Hillsborough Tragedy' of 15th April 1989 and relating to the alleged actions of fans of Liverpool Football Club at or around the time of the said tragedy."

Don't want to criticise but why not write it in plain english? I;m sure more people will sign if they're clear what it's about.

"We the undersigned call for a parliamentary debate to consider whether former Member of Parliament, Sir Irvine Patnick, brought Parliament into disrepute, when in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 he circulated lies of an insensitive, offensive and defamatory nature in a concerted effort with senior officers of the South Yorkshire Police to smear and defame the real victims of the disaster: the fans of Liverpool Football Club"

Patnick's submission to the Taylor Enquiry.

Double plausible deniability.  One for himself:

"I am not aware of names ranks or numbers of the officers but do believe they were telling me the truth"

Then one for his senior officer mate(s) (bit clumsy and obvious this one):

"I was advised by senior officers to take what had been said 'with a pinch of salt'"

Libel the fans and blame the junior officers for performing the actual libel.  Double libel.

Allegedly of course.

The least they can do is throw him to Paxman.
