Players Who Made Their Shirt Numbers Famous
« on: June 30, 2018, 07:21:07 pm »
This isn't a "pick your all time greatest 11" type thread. Instead, pick the players who (in your opinion) made their shirt numbers famous.

I'll start with:

1: Lev Yashin

2: Cafu

3: Paulo Maldini

4: Sergio "scumbag cunty-bollox" Ramos

5. Zinidine Zidane

6: Franco Baresi

7: Kenny Dalglish

8: Steven Gerrard

9: Marco VanBasten

10: Diego Maradonna

11: Ryan Giggs

That one has to go to Cryuff, surely?

I thought we could have more than one for the shirt - Cryuff has already been mentioned.

Henry could probably lay a strong claim to the number 14 shirt too

Some perspective needed on some of the suggestions.

7. Luis Figo

I associate Figo with 10 rather than 7. Don’t have many memories of him for Barca or Portugal.

Great shouts. And yeah like you I took this as a thread of players I associate with numbers rather than the definitive list.

Never been one to really pay attention to numbers, so most times, if a number is mentioned it will be a Liverpool player I come up with. When asked, goalies to me always wear 1, so I couldn't pick any that I associate with the number. For outfield players, the only top players that spring to mind when a number is said are

6 - Bobby Moore
7 - Dalglish
10 - Pele and Messi
13 Gerd Muller

Players like Cryuff, Beckenbauer, Jarzinho, Rivelino, Puskas, Best, etc, while great players, I have no idea what numbers they wore.

Not really and I agree that not too many can claim to have an iconic number. For me it’s also Liverpool related so 7 is Kenny and 9 is Rush. 6 is Hansen.

0: Hicham Zerouali
2: Clint Dempsey
5: Zidane
6: Bobby Moore
7: Dalglish
8: Gerrard
9: Alan Shearer
10: Maradona
14: Cruyff
1+8: Zamorano
21: Andrea Pirlo
23: David Beckham
26: John Terry
80: Ronaldinho
500: Romario

Mostly these are because the number’s weird (”you want to be the world’s best no.26 John? Sure, of course you can be the world’s best no.26”); or for 7, 9 and 10 because that number for that team has acquired some mythic quality, and these are the guys who absolutely owned it.  Could’ve had Pele or a number of others for no.10 I guess.

9 = van Basten or R9 for me. They were both world famous. Shearer is mostly just England famous.

6 = Xavi

7 = non Liverpool answer will likely be George Best.

Dunno who he was but I do remember Ossie Ardiles wearing #1 for Argentina during the 82 world cup. It was an alphabetical thing I believe. Edgar Davids wore it at Barnet but that was an ego thing.

Hard to argue with Zidane for #5 but before him I always associated it with Franz Beckenbauer. I'm old school and #5 has no business being an attacking midfielder.

Others I'd throw in are David Fairclough #12, the quintessential supersub, and Jari Litmanen #37, the story being he wanted either his own number, 10, or Kenny and Kevin's, 7, but they were taken and 37 sort of gave him both.
