World Cup 90 - 25 years on
« on: June 10, 2015, 09:01:28 pm »
For someone of my vintage this was my first proper World Cup when I was old enough to really sit up and take notice.

I collected the Orbis World Cup stickers in the ring binder and filled it! http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/orbis

I loved this tournament, it was an awakening in some ways.

One stat to dwell on: in 1990 we were closer to England's only Workd Cup win than we were to 2015.

I had that collection - started collecting it just after Christmas I think, it took ages!

I was the same, it was the first World Cup I really followed intently. Shame that it turned out to be one of the worst ones ever (in terms of entertainment), but it still seemed exciting at the time.

Yes, at the time the lack of goals didn't seem to matter. England's great run also helped. Little did I know that England fandom would significantly wilt as I grew into manhood.

I loved this World Cup. So many great flair players. So many characters. So many great little stories.

Roger Millar.
Cameroon.
Rijkaard spitting in Vollers hair.
Ireland beating Romania on penalties.
Costa Rica beating Scotland.
David Platts last minute volley against Belgium.
Lothar Matteus.
Jurgen Klinsmann and his death by a 1000 roles.
West Germany.
Salvatore 'Toto' Schillachi.
Gazza crying.
Rene Higuita.
Pavarotti and Nessun Dorma
The best England team we've had since 1966.

First world cup I watched, and the last brilliant world cup before football got completely commercialised. So many brilliant stories at that world cup and some fantastic players. World cups just don't excite like they used to. I still remember specific matches, goals and  goal scorers in obscure games from world cup 1990. Downhill ever since, for England and international football.

I'd just finished my second year at manc poly....skint, getting kicked out of our digs, not sure what to do, jumped on a bus to Newquay and spent a memorable 3 months of summer down there. That New Order track was everywhere and the town was absolutely buzzing right through the World Cup. The place went berserk after Platt's volley...and i had to go to work after the match on the nightshift restocking the fuckin baked beans in the Gateway. Could barely stand up, let alone stack shelves. Great world cup. Except the final was dull as anything wasn't it? I think i missed it.

The Guardian ran a great article about it a couple of years back, saying pretty exactly that: http://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2010/oct/14/on-second-thoughts-italia-90

It's one of those rare pieces that made me reassess the whole sport.  It doesn't matter so much whether the football's bad or good - what matters most is that it really matters.  Thinking like that gets me through the bad times at lfc, in a way.

Yes,  the UAE went on to score 1 goal at the world cup, in a 5-1 defeat to Germany. Someone called Bilal scored it.  He celebrated like he won a Rolls Royce!

Worst final ever. 2 argie players red carded. For 20 years I thought their treatment of Klinsmann was the worst sort of assault ever seen on a football pitch. Till I watched the match again a few years back and realised he was just diving. Magnificent triple forward rolls every time he got tackled.

Argentina V Italy in Naples , Armando leading the people against their own country . Omam Biyik, Hagi ,Valderamma, that Yugoslav squad minus Boban led by the back heel king Stojkovic, Enzo Schio,Butragueno, van Bastan Gullit, quality players all over but some awful games at it . England V Cameroon probably the best game .

Not a good World Cup this as a Swede. 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 were the results in the group stages against Brazil, Scotland and Costa Rica.

I remember that bellend Eamon Dunphy throwing his pen across the studio and saying he was ashamed to be Irish after drawing with Egypt in what was a woeful game.  ;D

Oh, is it still going? Who's winning?
It's 0-0 in extra time between Ireland and Argentina; FIFA made the mistake of eliminating the penalty shoot out and having a golden goal instead. The Argies are struggling to break down the Irish defence  :D

the pen throwing was a myth. it was a made out he launched it across the studio. its on youtube, he just threw it on a desk infront of him about an inch. was also the myth he said he was ashamed to be irish. he must have been the most hated man in dublin then. to be fair he called it right. it was shite football and he said it. he wasnt wrong. i think people expected everyone to tell us how great Ireland were and sing "ole ole ole" 24/7

the egypt game was horrific. bonner had possession of the ball for 6 minutes in total plus the egyptians were taking the piss blatantly all game.

I remember Brehme's goal looping up and over Shilton off Paul Parker!!

I also remember being really pissed off with Shilton for diving well after every penalty had been struck and never looking like saving any of them.
Obviously, in hindsight, the Germans were simply very good at penalties, but at the time - aged 14 - I thought Shilton should have just gambled and dived a bit earlier!!

Or we should have brought on Dave Beasant (if we had any subs left?). Shilton was painfully slow to react to the deflected free kick as well.

no. only 5 subs

chris woods was the named gk sub.

story persisted for years that beasant would come on for the shoot out. holland did it with Krul in the world cup last year

england did have a sub left but didnt use it. Beasant wasnt on the bench anyway

I didn't watch that match, but it is generally accepted in Egypt that this was one of the worst displays of all time, I think they cut the back pass rule after watching the Egyptian goal keeper Shoeiber have the ball more than any outfield player.

Not a great World Cup for Brazilians either. It'll always be the one that the Argentines drugged one of our players and beat us with a scrappy goal

was a fairly good goal to be fair but yeah Brazil absolutely murdered the Argies and lost 1-0. they hit the bar three times. twice in the space of 10 seconds. careca crossed from a tight angle and Gochoechea(sp) palmed it on to his own bar, then from the fluffled clearance alemao (hit the post)

Wasn't that the world cup that had those little footballs you could get if you went to a shopping center and did a few keepy uppys? I remember it being a bit of a craze when I was at primary school so it must have been 1990 or 86.

My favourite World Cup for a few reasons but mainly nostalgia. It didn't have loads of goals or great games but feels like it was the last pure World Cup where teams were unknown, players unknown not all the media razzmatazz etc & obviously before the premier league era which attracted all the Jonny come latelys, who now decorate there houses, cars & offices for each World Cup.

Great country to have it in with great moments especially England doing well & of course Nessun Dorma still gives me goosebumps. It was a perfect time as  I was 14 at the time & an age for me & my mates to properly experience a World Cup being that bit older etc

Great memories

was a fairly good goal to be fair
Come on, it's an all-time goal!  The run, four defenders converging on Maradona, him slipping the assist through, the golden forward rounding the keeper, and some absolutely iconic commentary courtesy of Barry Davies:

"Caniggiaaaa ... scores!"
