Nah, it's about the same at the last few years mate. The number of albums nominated and votes cast is very steady. Might even be a few more this year.

Okkervil mate, Im sure I speak for everyone when I thank you for providing what has become one of ..if not the ..highlights of the RAWK year..The RAWK album of the Year

VdM mate, Im sure I speak for everyone when I thank you for providing what has become one of ..if not the ..highlights of the RAWK year..The VdM making a bit of an embarrassment of himself in his RAWK album of the Year vote.( 2012 wrong year for CD, 2013 almost forgot to vote)

Vinyl? CD's are the future, they are unbreakable and you can spread jam on them and they still play, Tommorows World told me so in 1976...anyhoo!..cassettes are where its at in 2014...get that pencil and 'Rrreee-wind'

As for the votes , quite a variance , which is good, although the common denominators will come out on top and a tad predictable ( AF, Daft Punk)...look forward to top ten as I always pick one or two out I don't have ...I may even take on Drenge if they have it on cassette.

So then, with no further ado, the music worlds most prestigious badge of honour is finally awarded.

A record 306 albums got nominating nods from RAWKites, but this years winner blitzed the competition receiving a colossal overall score and breaking my Excel speadsheet formula in the process. In general the votes were much more evenly spread in last years incredibly tight vote, but this years vote was dominated by certain albums, with the top four all totalling more individually than last years winner. The race for the top 10 is always close, but this years top 4 or 5 were in a league of their own until the winner really got into their stride and became the first band to secure top spot for a second time in RAWK's annual music-fest.

People top 10 albums scores as follows: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1, with lists nominating 5 albums of less receiving a restricted points tally, but a number one album always scoring the maximum of 25 points. After total points scored albums are seperated firstly by the number of lists they topped and then by the number of lists they appeared in. If still level after this they are tied.

The results then....

TOP 20

Thanks Okkervil, always good to read the lists.  Appreciate your efforts.  :D

Barring Nick Cave and Bowie being a little low, it's pretty much exactly in line with the best selling "indies" of the year. Which is interesting.... maybe not, but to me anyway. Bunch of stuff to give a first/second chance to, from the lists I like the look of.

Glad Bill Callahan made the top 10 too.

Well at least you voted...just!

Would have liked a more left field top ten to reflect the sort of wiggy shit that crops up on the year in music thread, but I suppose the top ten order reflects popular taste ( and your all WRONG!!).

Like I said last year, some sort of communique  should be sent to the offices of the winning group to advise them of this prestigious award.

Shit bags! This was one of those threads that I just thought I had more time to get to! To be honest though, not being the music buff that some on here obviously are, it's more about finding hidden gems or just releases that passed me by!

Big thanks to Okkervil for putting it all together, I'll be rummaging about through that list for the next 2-3 months I would expect :wave

Oh and it's surely criminal that Daughter didn't make the top 50...the song Youth has become a staple of my drive to work in the morning...like Regina Spektor crossed with Sigur Ros...fucking marvellous! 8)

If you like this you should have a listen to the San Fermin self-titled album. Quite similar vocals and lyrics but with the backdrop of a 20 piece orchestra instead of an indie band.

Thanks for that, been addicted to the album

8.
Matthew E White - Big Inner

Got tipped off to this by Nick on here, think it was the first post of last year's 2013 In Music thread, and what a discovery. One of my only regrets this year is I couldn't make his show in Leaf - no babysitter, dammit! - I was even contemplating just breezing to Bold Street and standing outside with the pram but I thought better of it in the end. The bass playing is phenomenal throughout, especially on 'Big Love', which is a cracking tune. The epic closer 'Brazos' has White in full on preacher mode with a chorus of 'Jesus Christ/Is your friend' swelling to epic proportions. It's a brilliant blend of deep soul, dirty funk, heavy grooves and lots of great instrumentation, strings, piano, guitar, fantastic arrangements and good tunes. He also released an EP 'Outer Face' which was great - interestingly he stripped away a lot of the 'mid-range' instruments, guitar, piano, which leaves the songs feeling slightly weightless, with lots of room for sensual basslines to dominate. I think he has a lot of talent and am eagerly awaiting his next musical move.

Enjoying this!  ;D
