I don't know if their owners are putting in much money. Southampton were promoted into the premiership with a small wage bill, and they were able to spend a decent bit of money in the knowledge that they would make money even if they were relegated. They stayed up, their tv income is going to soar this year, and they've spent it on two or three rather expensive players.
Then again they had three 18 year olds starting against west brom on Saturday, and adam lallana and last season they signed nathaniel clyne, jay rodriguez and Gaston ramirez. they really put their faith in youth.
Aside from a couple of more expensive signings, the rest of the squad is made up of youth team players, and players they picked up along the way, back when they were broke. players like schneiderlin, fonte and lambert. These players aren't paid very much. then there are a bunch of players who were cheap gambles that didn't work out and are on the fringes. They don't have any debt to repay, they don't have any stadium to build, they've already got the space age academy and training ground. They can afford to spend a lot of money. on a couple of signings. The tricky bit for them will be to keep control of wages when they move out championship level players that they don't use and replace them with better and more expensive players.
They're just in the same position as swansea and Norwich. Two clubs that are now in a position to spend a fair whack of cash out of the money they are making.
