I was privileged to be invited to a preview of this tonight at the Anglican Cathedral. It's an excellent film, commissioned by the BBC's Religion & Ethics dept. There are some very powerful moments, including the Bishop of Liverpool asking who else you can trust to lead an investigation when all the normal instruments of State are necessarily under scrutiny. It does, naturally given the commissioning context, set out a Christian moral framework for its subject, specifically the 9th commandment: Thou shalt not bear false witness. Powerful stuff. Margaret Aspinall and Steve Kelly's narratives come across very well. If I have one quibble it's that there are constant cuts to black and white images of slummy Liverpool of yesteryear, and no reference to the relatively burgeoning Liverpool of more recent times, which perhaps are a backdrop to the events of the 20th anniversary and the call to Andy Burnham - culture sec during 2008 - for Justice for the 96. We end with more images of slum Liverpool from the 50s, then titles which annotate Bettison's disgrace, and which end with the words BBC Salford.
Definitely one to watch.
