1984 European Cup: John Peel broadcast
« on: March 27, 2013, 09:48:25 AM »
Mods, was going to put this on the History board..? Please move as you see fit

John Peel and the European Cup. Two things I miss.
Here's a recording of his radio show, happening during penalties in Rome and him trying to hold it together after the result... Enjoy  :wave

Thanks for posting this, listening now and enjoying it.

Couple of funny things; Peel saying that Liverpool fans don't sing much anymore, and the other DJ remembering walking out of the Liverpool fan shop with bags full of memorabilia. Modern football, eh!?  ;)

(About his wife)
'..And so she became a sort of Liverpool supporter as well and put up with the fact that we had to have red cars and that all of our kitchen fittings had to be red as well and that all of the curtains and lampshades the lampshades are all Liverpool lampshades. She put up with this over the years, and the fact that the children all had Liverpool associations in their names and so on..'

David Jensen - DJ

Thanks, faintly remember his voice, but couldn't come up with a name. David 'kid' Jensen. This is from when I was 10, going on 11. Weird what you can dredge up almost 30 years later. Of course if I close my eyes I can still see Grobs spaghetti legs clear as day.

thanks for that mate, great to hear it.
you can hear Peel's voice trembling at 33.10 before he plays Teenage Kicks, obviously very emotional.
the news item at 27.00 about Scargill's arrest and trouble at the coking plant in South Yorkshire is an apt reminder of the times too.

here's a nice vid I came across the other night, where Peel goes to visit Glenbuck to pay his respects at the Shankly memorial there.
it starts at 8:20.

Call me an old softy, but I had tears in my eyes listening to that. Peel was a real gent and a proper Red, I spent most of the late seventies and eighties listening to his wonderful radio show.
A great snapshot of another era, when LFC really were top dogs,  thanks for posting that. I do feel for the younger generation of Liverpool supporters, at least us old farts have our memories. ( until the Alzheimer's kicks in.)
Now where are those tissues?

John Peel is a legend in broadcasting.

Read his book 'margrave of the marshes' which was finished off by his wife Sheila, due to his untimely death

A Liverpool nut, think he even gave some of his kids LFC middle names.

Top notch fella. Sadly missed.

Very strange when he said "We've won 4 now with only one team ahead of us.  If we win another couple etc"  Real Madrid of course ... but only on 6 at the time. In 1984 Milan were on ...... 2.

Real 6
LFC 4
Ajax 3
Bayern 3
Milan 2
United 1
Barca 0

Been listening to David Byrne all morning. Going to jib it now and listen to this. Don't half miss John Peel. A great lad.
"A peasant you are. A peasant you will remain. And we shall use all our wealth and power, to make your lot even worse and keep you exactly where you are, Bondage!"    The Boy King, Richard II, after  putting down the The Peasants Revolt in 1381.

Kid Jensen... remember you took me to Anfield and I bought loads of shite from the shop?
Peeley... Yeah. I haven't been back since.

Wonder what he'd make of the new bootroom and half and half LFC and Standard Chartered scarfs?

The intro to Peel's radio show, the YNWA, then the bell ringing, then the Wah. This is exactly what I wanted to listen to to finish the night with tonight, I know it's an odd bump but go to 27:34 and play from there and just smile.
