Just about to start on BBC1, should be interesting. :)

Yep, really enjoyed it. Haven't seen much of the series so might try and catch up with some of the others now.

Top quality programme. Good lesson in Jamaican history too. Barnes is from a family of freedom fighters!

I've never watched this programme before, but the Missus told me Barnsey was on, so I thought I give it a viewing. Have to say, it was an excellent documentary. Loved him as a player,
and loved him for being such a catalyst in the reduction of racism from within our fanbase; added to this, he's stayed on Merseyside after his football career and
always represents the club so well. His grandfather seemed like a great man too. Fascinating to see how central he was to the move towards Jamaican independence (his Grandfather, not Barnes, obviously!) and also at the heart
of the trade union movement on the island. Well worth catching on iplayer for anybody who is interested.

Big socialist and trade-union background. John's granddad was a major player in the fight against British colonialism in Jamaica and a founder-member of the People's National Party.

Great programme generally - I watch it whoever the subject is.

Think this last series has been the weakest to date though. Previous programmes tended to go back a lot further in history, whereas the later ones just seem to go back a generation or two, although that does give them time to flesh out the individuals a bit more.

Barnes' episode last night was great - real eye-opener. Goes a long way to explaining how the lad was able to cope with the racsim he suffered too. Long line of intelligent, thoughtful, movers and shakers in his family.

And how cool was that professor!

Did he? Do you have a quote for that anywhere as would be interesting to see what he said?

Especially, considering he said this...

"Football is a socialist sport," he explains. "Financially, some may receive more rewards than others but, from a footballing perspective, for 90 minutes, regardless of whether you are Lionel Messi or the substitute right-back for Argentina, you are all working to the same end.

"The teams which embrace the socialist ideology rather than having superstars, are the teams that are successful. Or if there are superstars they don't perceive themselves to be that. That's why I use Messi as an example. As much as he's a superstar he respects his team-mates and their collective efforts."

An idea for what Clockspeed is on yes...

Yup, watched it. Programme was great however I'm totally pissed off because I remembered the summer when we bought john and peter into a side that had finished runners up.

You just knew it was going to be good. Unlike now. Now everything is bad. The walls are closing in and my head hurts. It hurts from the years I've been subjected to all the time I've been so close yet so far. So very very very far. Each time I want to walk away I just cant. I just fucking can't do it. It's drawn me in. It's made me feel things I didn't think possible or even worthy of contemplation. Every seperation cliche road I walk down just brings back to the same place. What is living when I live without that which I need the most?

hmm, I'm always suspicious of multi-millionaires (or former millionaires in this case) using the word socialism to describe football, when they actually mean no such thing. They mean collectivism. As the grandchild of a nation founder, and as such part of the cream of jamaican political society, and as the son of a general, barnes is about as much a socialist as mitt romney. Professional football in england is about as socialist as the new york stock exchange, and that makes us about as socialist as BP. you could replace the word socialism in barnes' quote with fascism and it would mean exactly the same thing and be about as true.

He's just using words to appeal to fans from a city that 30 years ago had a city council dominated by three strands of the labour party, where the least left wing one was the Michael Foot lead Labour, which was just about the most left wing mainstream party outside of the eastern bloc. He's no more socialist than Bill Shankly or someone like that great socialist Mr Ferguson is.

I'll believe in talk of football and socialism when I see the PFA leading a march looking for a 60% tax rate for people earning over £100K a year.

As a big fan of Barnes the footballer, and with an interest in British colonial history, I was always going to enjoy this one.

I knew John's old man was a big cheese in the army, but I had no idea he was from such a well connected background politically, nor did he, it seems.

More insight in this show than the several episodes of 'Being Liverpool' I've seen.  Maybe I'm getting old?

Watched this yesterday. Love Barnes. Such a solid human being - despite being the self confessed "outdoors" type he is incredibly eloquent and is clearly a pretty intelligent guy. And just so turns out his grandad is a Jamaican hero.

I also loved Paul Tomkins article on him on Monday as well.

When I read the bit about him holding off 3 defenders at the same time..........I imagined it in my head and was like WOW!!!

Really compulsive viewing. There has gotta be something genetic about influential individuals who reach the top of their chosen profession. Not only was Barnes's father a celebrated soldier and sportsman, the men on his mother's side were integral to the development of Jamaican independence. What a great story.
