It's getting very exciting.  Holtby could be class for us if given the right formation and freedom to play in.

Although both are attacking midfielders, they aren't similar. Holtby is more of a play-maker whose strengths are his dribbling, passing and vision while Sigurdsson is more of a box-box attacking midfielder whose strengths are his movement, work-rate and finishing. I really wanted us to get Sigurdsson and was a bit disappointed when we missed out on him but Holtby would be an as good buy as him.
So like David Silva.

Has anyone here followed him enough to state with confidence that he would be a great signing, I need convincing to be honest. I am never sure if post's claiming him to be great are based on watching him extensively or on you tube clips.

Can't state with confidence that he'd be a great signing, but I've watched him more than a few times this season and thought he was a very good player. There are no good YouTubes of him from this season so if anyone's looking they might as well not waste their time. Can dribble the ball through traffic and play well with both feet. The main obstacle here would be price. Schalke have money and could demand a high fee. His best position was in central midfield. What could work in our favor is that he wasn't automatic first choice all season, but I think he's a better player than those who started above him. Schalke also have a lot of great young players and could potentially afford to shift one on to bring in a more experienced player if they wanted to.

In short: wouldn't count on it, but if it happened that would be very good. Also shows we're looking at the right types of players here, young with very good to great technical ability and potential.

His contract is up at the end of this upcoming season so he'd be cheap as chips, relatively speaking

Did he move to Germany in childhood? Will he count as home grown?
No he was born and brought up there. His Dad was in the Army and based in Germany, and married a German bird.

No, he was seriously pursued by the FA to get him to play for England but he decided to play for Germany
He wasn't, the FA never even bothered. he did an interview on TalkSport last year and he said he would be open to the idea of playing for England, but that the FA had never been in touch with him.

Nope. I've seen him play a few times for Schalke, but from what I can gather they didn't play him in his natural position, so that doesn't seem to be of much use.

I don't watch Shalke so not in a position to coment but he's the right age and according to whoscored.com he had a good season this year in a year where some are suggesting he was comparatively poor and played out of position.

Can't really remember him from watching Bundesliga, and haven't seen much of Schalke recently to be honest. What's his best position?

IMO we really need some wingers now.
I'm really hoping Sturridge busts out the wacky dip when he scores.

German friend of mine's been keen on this guy for a while. Haven't seen him play much myself, but from what I've heard/read this seems like it'd be another "exactly the kind of deal we should be making" signing after Borini.

Incidentally, there are only a handful of < 22-year-olds on Soccermanager rated higher than him, which is a good sign.
You know what, I'm writing this here now and I'm going to put it in my signature and leave it there for the next 5 years, no matter how embarrassing it might or might not turn out to be: Jordan Henderson is going to be a fantastic player.

So what are we looking at then? A 22 year old international midfielder, good with the ball at his feet, and allegedly decent at dribbling and fairly two footed?

What's his temperament like? Is he creative? Good at recycling? Goal threat? Speed? I've really got no fucking clue like. Trying to piece bits together from the thread.

A natural replacement for Maxi then if he does sign?  Or a cheaper alternative to Ramirez?

Lewis Holtby is pretty good on FM :D

But that aside, I wasn't too impressed with him when I watched Schalke. Very far from a finished article. May be a good buy, but IMO he needs to come cheap to make the risk worth.

Certainly not. And this is not because Tello is a Barca youngster, but Holtby doesn't start for Schalke. I'd expect Schalke's best player to make a considerable impact at Liverpool, not a bench one.

Tello is in Spanish Olympic team with Mata and Martinez. The competition is really high for that spot, and him being there means how good he is. However, I didn't watch enough of Holtby (because he doesn't always start) to make a conclusion based on actual performances.

I don't think it's fair to judge a player simply by his appearance count. Sigurdsson wasn't even being played by Hofenheim before Rodgers brought him to Swansea, and he's quite clearly good enough.

Though I do understand your point. Certainly, being given a starting place on multiple occasions for the world's very best team is a good sign. And despite the fact that he relies on his speed to do his work, I don't think it's necessarily too bad a quality considering we don't have any players that are real speed merchants, and it's good to have one of them around for sure.

Theyre very different players though, regardless and I wouldn't view them as an either/or trade off. I'd love either Holtby or Tello in a Liverpool shirt.

They're different players anyways. It would like comparing Cristiano Ronaldo with Iniesta. Holtby is an attacking midfielder whose best position is as the most advanced midfielder in a three man midfield. But Schalke used him as a holding midfielder or central midfielder in a two man midfield. Both would be very good additions to our squad though.

Haven't seen much of him at all, tho know his story (German blue, who the FA couldn't convince - "er... no thanks ta"). Thought he was a winger type, so I'm quite interested to see on here that he was given defensive responsibilities too. I quite like that. If only we had done that with Ryan Babel.

Exactly my thought. Holtby is nowhere near good enough for Liverpool and it would be the best for him and for us if he stays at Schalke.

Holtby played 40 matches in all competitions last season, started 32 of them. There's very good competition for spots at Schalke as well. And he's only 21 years old. Schalke also thought him good enough to play in both semifinals of the Europa League, started the second leg and played 35 minutes in the first. Any talk of him not being a regular player there is nonsense, which is also why it would be difficult for us to sign him.
