The Argentinian, popular with supporters if not with the three different managers he had at Anfield, wrote an open letter to supporters.

"Dear Reds, I am leaving Liverpool FC today," it said. "Before signing for LFC, I just saw the club as one of the greatest institutions in football. After my time here I can confirm that this is not just a great club but also a great family.

"I have tried to give everything every day that I was wearing the LFC crest. It has been a great honour to defend this shirt during two and a half years.

"I am returning home with a suitcase full of great memories, good friends within the team and also within this great family that works every day in the club. Thanks a lot for your support. Hasta la vista."

A statement from the club read: "Everyone at Liverpool FC would like to thank Maxi for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best for the future."
“Above all, I would like to be remembered as a man who was selfless, who strove and worried so that others could share the glory, and who built up a family of people who could hold their heads up high and say, 'We're Liverpool'.”

Dear Reds, I am leaving Liverpool FC today.

Before signing for LFC, I just saw the club as one of the greatest institutions in football. After my time here I can confirm that this is not just a great club but also a great family.

I have tried to give everything every day that I was wearing the LFC crest. It has been a great honour to defend this shirt during two and a half years. I am returning home with a suitcase full of great memories, good friends within the team and also within this great family that works every day in the club. Thanks a lot for your support. You can NOT imagine what a great honour it was for me when the Kop sang, 'Maxi, Maxi Rodríguez runs down the wing for me da da da da dada...'

Hasta la vista.

Anyone knows how much we got for him?

Id say under a million if anything at all. He only had a year left, we clearly wanted him off the wage bill and its not like Argentinian clubs are gonna be dishing out 2-5m on aging players.

Shame as he could have offered us a lot this coming season but good luck to him. Shame he didn't play more especially when he was scoring a lot of goals and yet still not being a regular. Good servant to the club through hard times.

Gutted, good luck to him. Will be missed, hope he does well back home.
I've always supported the club not the individual. I'd like to see the club back where I most fondly remember it, at the top. That means there's no place for Carragher or anyone else who is past their sell by date.

Adios Maxi!

He was exceptional for us last season when he played, which, unfortunately, wasn't enough. I think he could be a passenger in games when he joined for us and the reputation must have stuck despite his subsequent goals. He was a lesson to other players about great movement and making intelligent runs

Sad, but I think we all expected it. I think when I heard Brendan saying yesterday he wanted to keep him, I thought there may be a chance, but seemingly not. Thanks for the goals, Maxi. Hope to see you back at Anfield as a fan some day.

We have to sing his song, just like we still sing Garcia's.
Massively agree. As someone else put too, great song and massively underused. Them down the road do that bloody Cantona song every frigging Christmas, we need to get more 'old' songs on the go (I know we have a good few already, nowt wrong with more though), and that should be one of them. Get Anfield singing more.

Anyway, thanks Maxi, good luck mate :wave
