Real pity IMO.
Not quite the same level of unused ability, but there's a fair bit of the Litmanens about this.
Could and should have had so much more game time.
Best of luck Maxi...

Rodgers' quotes about Maxi have been pulled from the official website.
"My coach told me to warm up just before the break. He told me I was going to take care of Kaka. I didn't think it was possible to turn things around but in the dressing room at halftime Rafa Benitez was calm - "We are Liverpool FC, we have so many fans, we are not going to be slaughtered. If we can score a goal quickly we push on from there.""

It's not going to look great, is it? Manager pleads with Maxi to stay, less than 24 hours later he packs his bag.

Pleading? Not how I read it. Good to know Rodgers saw what he could offer the new style; if Maxi's wife is homesick, so be it.
Liverpool is a special place because they make their own players into gods extraordinarily, recklessly quickly.

I hear Maxi's gone. Trained this morning but had meeting with his lawyers and the club afterwards and according to team-mates he's off.

Not surprised. Most reports out of Argentina earlier in the week suggested he would be gone by Friday once he resolved matters

are we atleast getting a decent fee?

He'll likely be leaving on a free mate, we're just happy to free up his wages.

They seem to think he's trying to negotiate his way out of his contract. So no fee

I guess those quotes from Rodgers were a way of telling the fans that he tried to keep him.  He's been a great, little signing and never kicked up a fuss about not getting the minutes he deserved.  Something of a cult hero and someone I'll keep an eye on.

Best of luck Maxi.

I'll be sad to see Maxi go, but at the same time, like Kuyt, it's nice to part on good terms with a player.

I'm looking forward to seeing what we do with all these wages freed up.

Liverpool Football Club can today confirm that Maxi Rodriguez has joined Newell's Old Boys in Argentina.

Maxi, who arrived at Anfield from Atletico Madrid in January 2010, netted 17 goals in 73 appearances for the Reds.

Highlights of the midfielder's Anfield career include two hat-tricks in the space of a couple of weeks against Birmingham and Fulham in 2011 as well as important strikes against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in November of that year.

Everyone at Liverpool FC would like to thank Maxi for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best for the future.

Good luck Maxi :(

They took the article about Rodgers trying to persuade him to stay down an hour or so ago, so figured as much.

Shame, but gave us some good moments.

Cheers Maxi.

Never rated him as highly as a lot on here, but there's no denying that his goals came in pretty damn useful at a time where we weren't exactly scoring for fun. Should have been used far more last season, and I don't think anyone can really justify what happened with him last year.

Good luck Maxi :)

Gutted. :( All the best Maxi, I'll miss your song...
Rafa Benitez: "I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool. I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager. Thank you so much once more and always remember: You'll never walk alone."
