Devo'd for Scott but great to see a legend like Els back on top.
It's true to say that if Shankly had told us to invade Poland we'd be queuing up 10 deep all the way from Anfield to the Pier Head.

Considering there wasn't an awful lot of drama, that was dramatic in the end. What a way to throw the championship away by a couple of players.

Well done Ernie.

4 consecutive bogeys on his last 4 holes. Can't imagine that's ever happened in a Major before.
Feel for Scott, as he played so well up to then, but Els has always been a class act and gets his 4th Major now.
Filthy old alcoholic lying trampy bastard.

Wow, BBC's turned on the mawkish afterburners!
She'd say, "Would you stop naming nuts!" And Hubert used to be able to make the sound, he couldn't talk, but he'd go "rrrawr rrawr" and that sounded like Macadamia nut. Pine nut, which is a nut, but it's also the name of a town. Pistachio nut. Red pistachio nut. Natural, all natural white pistachio nut.

Don't get too happy.  I reckon they have equal amounts of majors left in them.  (Thats zero)

What a shite day that was.  Fucking boring golf all day, no-one doing anything. McDowell was fucking crap. Poor club selection front 9, even when Scott was clearly nervy, poor shot choice all day. Truly awful round.        Then, and while I do like Els, I just hate days when someone just throws it away like that.  Feel for Scott, and that tarnishes it a bit for me.  Saying that, and I admit I wasn't paying much heed to him, considering how ordinary Els putted all week, he must have been playing some great stuff tee to green.

Ernie tee-ing off at the 10th, I think he was six shots back at that point...little did we know at the time. Astonishing turnaround, well done Ernie.

Many congrats to Ernie. Can't help but feel for Scott. It was definitely a case of him losing the open. That three putt where it lipped killed him.

Just got back from a cracking day at Lytham, little bit red now. :D

Found a cracking spot by the 3rd green and 4th tee, where i could see both of them and could turn round and watch the 6th green too. Got a stern word off a marshall for trying to get a sneaky pic of Tiger with my phone though... Ooops.

Then moved to the 17th green to watch the top order come through to finish.

Deffo gonna do Hoylake in '14.

Apparently, there's a sports radio station in Melbourne who run a golf segment on a Wednesday night. Last week the prize for the quiz was a $1,000 bet on The Open. The guy who won the quiz put it all on Adam Scott at 33/1.

We probably got there at about 7:30 and watched a few tee off and putt out on the 1st then tried to catch up with Daly and Watson who were already out. We caught up with them on the 7th and watched their first two shots, I'd already been warned that it is almost impossible to follow a group and keep up with them and so it proved. We settled at the stand facing the 9th tee/green and 10th tee and watched them come through and stayed there until the leaders came through then moved to the 18th green. On the 9th green there were a couple of near hole-in-one's before the TV camera's were rolling, but generally you could see the difference in the quality of the tee shots as the better players came through. Westwood a typical example although he missed his birdie putt as usual, however two of the worst shots came from Woods and McDowell on that hole. It was fascinating seeing the majority of the field come through the same hole and watching so many of them miss the same putt on the same side, you could almost predict it after all the "reads" we'd seen.

I did manage to get a few pictures only when I was certain that I wouldn't disturb the players, it only seemed to be on-top for Woods probably on the instruction of one of his bodyguards - did you see them? My mate went watching his practice round on the Sunday and he was saying that one of this body guards was with him throughout the round. He also said that whilst other players were simply putting towards the hole, Woods had the hole locations for the four days marked with tees and he was putting one handed to them and making a note of the line on a note pad. Far play to his professional approach when it comes to golf!

We got passed by a few golfers being driven away from the course as we left to get to the car park.  Tigers was the only one we saw that had a police bike escort!

Did you go round the 'villages' much? We had a look at the  bunker and long drive challenge at the hsbc golfzone but the queues were massive so never bothered.  Did get a go on this Ł20,000 simulator that was in another stand though, Par'd the par 3 11th at Saint Andrews :D

No just went to watch the golf, I did notice the massive advertising campaign by Direct Golf and I did wonder if they had some sort of a driving range available to try some clubs as I've had my eye on a set of Nike VRS irons. Oh well I guess I'll have to wait for their next open day or try them at the Trafford centre driving range via American golf.

Woods is the most talented player to ever pick up a golf club.
Simply not true. Not even close in fact.
He's a well drilled machine that was groomed for greatness from being toddler. Seve was a self taught genius.
In one.

All golfers are groomed, it's the most robotic sport ever.
So teaching yourself to play with a rusty 3 iron head you made your own shaft for is being groomed? Jesus wept.

Seve could play splash flop shots from bunkers with a 3 iron. Was he groomed to do that? No, he taught himself. Can anyone else do it like he could? No. Absolute genius and there hasn't been anyone close to him in terms of raw talent. It can't even be an argument, this is farcical.

Since Woods isn't even close to being the most talented golfer ever, please provide me with a list of the players with more golfing talent. I'll check it out later when I return from work. Cheers.

It's a nice story about Seve.

But i'd wager Tiger could hit a 3 iron out of a bunker. Or a 1 iron.

There's the story of Nikes commercial, i'm sure you'll remember it,  where they asked Tiger to bounce the ball on his driver then take a golf swing at it and smash it down the range. They were going to "massage" the tape so it appeared Tiger could do it. Tiger did it the first take and they were shocked. He repeated it for multiple takes to make the commercial. Manufactured swing and all. Could Seve do that?

There's also a story about Lee Trevino betting players he could beat them with a taped up Coke bottle. He won money at that to fund his golfing pursuits.

So i think it's a bit disrespectful to some of the golfs great players to say players are manufactured. They've put in the time working day and night to get where they are.

The difference with Tiger , Jack, Arnold, Lee, Bobby Jones, Gary Player, Nick Faldo, and all the really top golfers is the mental strength and desire to win. Tigers 84 wins pays price to that. It's hard to win any tournament . It's hard to be consistent and win 10 tournaments in a season. Players "A" game comes and goes but they win thru other means and mental strength. Being manufactured doesn't come into play because the golf swing can't be replicated day on day, month on month, year or year for the length of a players career.

ALPH - one. Seve. Thought that was obvious.

4pool, you're wrong on that first point and Woods has even said so himself.

Yes, Seve could do that trick. He also shot in the 70s at La Manga playing off his knees only.

Can't believe I'm reading this to be honest. Perhaps I have a different definition of the word 'talented'.

Hell, I can ..well could, hit a 3 iron out of a bunker. I tried it. And i was off a 10 handicap.

I'm sure Tiger can do it as well.

I suppose he means with similar consistency of how he hits his sand wedge.

the thing is we're not talking about hitting a 3iron out of a bunker, we're talking hitting a splash shot, as in a flop shot / bunker shot, with a 3iron, not just standing up and hitting a 3 iron out of a bunker.

Pretty sure most golfers including woods and mickleson have gone on record as saying Seve was the most talented player ever.

think the 6th one is the shot Jack N (the best overall golfer ever) called the best shot he had ever seen

They have indeed Clockspeed, thanks. Think some have assumed I meant 'best' rather than 'talented'. Of course Tiger is a better all round golfer but for sheer talent Seve was in a league of his own and will probably never be surpassed.

the thing is we're not talking about hitting a 3iron out of a bunker, we're talking hitting a splash shot, as in a flop shot / bunker shot, with a 3iron, not just standing up and hitting a 3 iron out of a bunker.

Jesus Christ.

I've played golf for about 40 years, I do think I know what Seve did.

And i do think I tried it as well. From a greenside bunker to a tight pin. Took some practice one day and gave it a go. I could get the ball out with a 3 iron. Not nearly as good as my sand wedge but I could get the ball out.

Well let me come at this from a different angle.

Let's say it is 2000.

Let's say someone puts up some big money and a challenge for tv.
Seve v Tiger.
3 iron challenge from a green side bunker.

Both players are helicoptered to a green at a great course. Only bringing their 3 iron and 10 golf balls.

They are then put in a bunker and told to hit the 3 iron out to the pin. Total distance of all 10 balls relative to the hole will be added up.

They each take a turn.

Then they do this twice more...for a total of 3 different pin locations on the same green.

Now Seve should win. But it would be a hell of a lot closer than i think people would suspect. One, because Tiger would practice like hell with his 3 iron for the challenge. Two, because Tiger loves a challenge. And three, because Tiger doesn't like losing at anything.

So yeah, people could say Seve is the best at it. But that damn sure doesn't mean Tiger couldn't do it very well.

About 10 years ago I watched a match on Shell's Wonderful World of Golf over here. It was played in Spain between Tom Kite and Seve. Great entertainment and worth watching if someone can dig it up. Seve was all over the place and probably didn't hit a fairway. Throughout the match he was getting up and down from these near-impossible positions. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything like it. Kite trounced him by about 7 but the talking point afterwards was Seve's constant miraculous shots out of trouble.

thats like saying, hey, you'll have a drugs and alcohol test on monday so stay off the gear at the weekend, the guy will pass. if its a surprise test the guy would have no idea, no preparation, and fail.

You just said that Tiger would have to prepare for this challenge and work on it as he doesnt like to lose. The other guy is saying that Seve is natural and could do it. (obviously he worked at it when he was younger!)

Oh, do get over yourself.

The legend is when Seve started out as a kid the only club he had was a cut down 3 iron. So he played every shot with it. He also took it to the beach to practice hitting it out of the sand. So when he played on a course he hit the 3 iron out of the green side bunker.

Now i defy you..anyone...to show me any  Tournament Seve ever played in his career when he hit a 3 iron out of a green side bunker. Go on show me!

So the legend grows that Seve is the Superman with shots and only played on the tour with a 3 iron. ( well that will be the legend in another 50 years).

Seve started out with one club. But I would wager he eventually got more. He hit shots out of car parks. He hit marvelous shots from his wild drives or tough places his ball ended up.

And you know what..there's videos of Tigers wild drives, tough spots, and miraculous shots as well.  He didn't learn those by being some sort of robot with a swing. Because, at the end of the day, hitting those shots takes feel and talent.
