Anyone heard anything about Maxi being let go. Apparently he is asking to be released to go to Newell.

According to Reuters journalist @fczyz, Maxi had a meeting with Liverpool an hour ago, and now close to signing for Newell.

Some Argentine journalist tweeted that he had been released about an hour or so ago. FWIW. Haven't a clue as to reliability of said journalist.

I don't think a DM should be a priority. We have enough central midfielders, and although none of them are the sort of player that naturally anchors the midfield like Lucas does, I'm sure they could do the job in Rogers' playing style. Allen and Britton aren't exactly Lucas-esque enforcers, but Rogers' style of having the team press and having so much of the ball meant it wasn't really necessary. I'd rather see us give Henderson and Shelvey more games in the middle, and spend our money on attacking wingers.   

Or we sign someone who can play as a DM and cover for other positions, someone like Vernon Anita can cover DM and left back, so we could sell Spearing / Adam and let Robinson go out on loan for experience., would be a great signing IMO

I would like this. I also think Ajax wouldn't demand a major fee either.

If we're letting a few players go, 3 or 4 improvements is not enough to get top 4 in my honest opinion especially if most the players we are linked with are not world class.

Love Maxi and everything but he is one huge wages. And fairplay if he's willing to take a paycut to go back home and play regular football. Pity a few others in the squad don't feel the same.

Agreed. I think Maxi's really good, but at his age and how much he's likely to play this season I believe he's on a massive wage (80k or 90k wasn't it?). I don't particularly want to see him go but freeing up those wages for a younger player could be a good thing.

Can only echo the thoughts on Maxi. He's gave us a good three or so years, but he's getting on and wants to move back home. Wish him all the best, leaving on good terms

If Maxi's gone, I hope his wages go to someone who's an upgrade. I'm sick to death of losing quality players and replacing them with those who aren't good enough to play for us, or those who just aren't ready to play week in, week out for us, like how Hendo just wasn't ready to replace Meireles in the first team.

Dempsey and Borini for Kuyt and Maxi makes some sense I suppose, and we could do a hell of a lot worse, but Dempsey's age makes me think he's unlikely because he's not too far off Maxi or Kuyt in terms of age.

From what I've seen of him I've never noticed him having a bad first touch. He's always looked reasonably quick to me.

Is anyone else slightly worried about te fact that if we get Borini and Dempsy, and they are a part of our front 3 with Suarez, that again this year we have a bunch of work horses but very few very skillful players? (this is based on people saying Borini is a worker like Kuyt)

Hopefully we will ad creativity in midfield, but still a front 3 of Suarez-Borini-Dempsy looks like a forward line of people who are there to do a job whilst Suarez provides most of the creative outlet.

To be honest, unless we spend massive money (and we won't) it's going to be very difficult this season anyway. Add a back up/partner to Lucas as well as Sturridge, Dempsey and Borini and we'd have a decent chance though.

I'd be hoping that we'd use Dempsey as a squad player personally, and hopefully we'd get someone a bit more exciting for the first choice "3". Could be stretching our budget a bit though.

I'll be gutted if Maxi goes, honestly. I love the little fucking Adam Sandler lookalike. My favourite player of the last few seasons, when he was at atletico and when he came here. If it's true, good luck to him.

And to be honest, I think if Carroll is let go, that will be a mistake too. Gut feeling selling him now will come back to bite us on the arse in the future.

You can bend stats to suit any argument. I could say "look at all the goal scoring chances he's getting in to if he's scoring 20 odd goals with a conversation rate of just 11.6%".

Regardless of his 'conversion rate' he scored 20 odd goals last season.

Can't see how, it's going to be insanely competitive this season and thus far no one we've been seriously linked to is the credible creative threat required.

Same old, same old, when we're struggling to break sides down there'll be a unanimous acceptance of the notion that we really do need a second top level match winner, then the window will roll around, we'll be linked with ricardo vaz te and he'll instantly be the answer to all our problems.
