Seen him a couple of times and not been overly impressed.

Tim Vickery who knows his South American footballers better than anyone is of the opinion he'd struggle in the Premier League.

Since when did Ramirez turn from a player we were hopelessly salivating over in the other thread into a player that's not good enough?

Is it because we might actually sign him now?
Since different people with different opinions started posting? Amazing, eh?  ::)

He's 21 though. Plenty of time for him to toughen up before he hits his peak years. If I remember right, the same concerns were bandied about regarding Suarez. Doubt he could handle a much more physical league. I wouldn't really say he's struggled much in regards to that.

We should be concerned whether potential signings can handle the xenophobic, pro-whiskey nose media. Now that there's a test of character.  ;)

Never seen him play. Those who have, how good could he become? What player would remind He remind you of?

Kaka, of about 8 years ago. Similar running gate, same sort of approach. Has Uruguayan blood though, and it boils quickly.

He could play RW or as the attacking mid Sigurdsson was at Swansea last season. He's going to be a star, but he needs the right coaching and environment for him to allow his talents to flourish. I think we'd be a good side for him to turn into that player.

He was exceptional at Bologna last season but I don't expect him to hit the ground running if he comes, will probably take a little while to adjust, particularly if he goes to the Olympics. Of course, I could quite easily be wrong there but that my gut feeling.

There is no doubt Tim Vickery knows his South American players, however it is only his opinion. The hard fact is you never know how good or bad a player is going to be in any team until he's actually in it. Some people get carried away with pushing their opinion on a player that they try to pass it off as fact and it's surprising how many people fall for it and then it seems to become a general consensus. Look at the player yourself, form your own opinion of him and try not let someone make up your mind for you. Some people watch players and are in a good position to offer an opinion which is much appreciated, it doesn't make it fact all the time though. Don't be afraid to question things sometimes.

I thought Torres, amongst others, wouldn't hit a barn door when we brought him here honestly, I've since learned my lesson and now I try and adopt a 'wait and see approach'. Granted, it's not easy sometimes when we get linked to some bizarre names I must say but I've come to the conclusion that a lot of our fans are not as smart as they like to think they are and things are usually never as black and white as they seem. That's not to tar everyone with the same brush because we also have a lot of highly intelligent supporters who really do know their football (though im probably not one of them ;D).

So to sum up, I like Ramirez. The price, on the face of it doesn't look right to me.  ;D

Tim Vickery on Lucas before his move to Liverpool.

Who is Lucas Leiva? What is his true position? And based on a previous article about South American youngsters leaving too early, eg. Gabriel Paletta, is Lucas ready to come to the Premiership just yet?
Mark Williams, Leamington Spa (and many others)

These moves are always a gamble, but I think this is a good one.

He's an exciting player of a type that Brazilian football hasn't produced too many of recently. Of late their central midfielders have tended to be 'holders' who sit and allow the full-backs to push forward.

Lucas is different. He's a big, blonde figure whose power and physical strength comes with attacking ability.

He can pass well and loves to rumble forward. He gets on the scoresheet both with blistering shots from range and from bursting beyond the strikers.

You can certainly imagine him playing alongside Javier Mascherano, for example.

I don't have the same fears for him as I did with Paletta. He's had two full seasons behind him - one helping Gremio win promotion from the second division, and then last year's success when he was chosen as the player of the championship.

In a perfect world you might want him to stay another year before moving on, but (a) Gremio need to sell to balance the books and (b) with Liverpool's strength in depth in central midfield it looks as if his first campaign will be a bedding in season.

Potentially, yes. But it will take time, and patience from our fans.

I think there are others of similar,if not bigger talent, in Serie A. Notable two being Lamela and Coutinho, but also Luis Muriel who has talent to get whatever he wants from football (though he plays in a different position).

But Ramirez is a big talent as well. Of course it's wrong to say he's the new Kaka or what have you (even though there are plenty of footballing similarities)as he'll make his own path, but like Ricardo he's got the talent to become a household name for all te right reasons.

I thought he was about 6' and pretty solid/tough footballer

Yes, and to an extent. Physically he has no problem dealing with the uncompromising defenders in Italy, but mentally he has to learn that it happens in football, and not to be so petulant towards refs. So long as he can focus himself to avoid those unnecessary battles (similar to Luis) then once he's settled I think he could thrive in England as there is more space between the lines.

I swear I read a Vickery article about Brazilian number 5s that said Lucas was vital for Brazil, I'm pretty sure he rates him.

That being said, Vickery is usually spot on but nobody is 100% right ever. I can't imagine a 21 year old forward can't grow or develop into a better player.

EDIT: Apparently my grey matter is faulty. He's always rated him. Carry on.

If we've lost Sigurdsson and Ramirez really is our alternative to him, and we believe he's good enough,  there really should be no delay.

€20m. So ~£17m pounds?

I'd say that's a risk worth taking, Bologna are hardly going to let him go for a pittance.

I concur. I really don't think he's anything special. If he was available for something like £8m he'd be worth a punt but £20m? I think he'd be as big a flop as Reyes was at Arsenal.

This is a big statement. But i'd rather have Downing in the team.

Do we think Ramirez is a Sigurdsson alternative? I know they can both play in the hole, but I assume Gylfi was for one of the attacking midfield slots and Gaston is being targeted for wide left.

There's a huge difference between the fee Bologna want and the fee they'll get. Remember all the nonsense about Porto wanting 80-odd million for Hulk? He'll cost Chelsea half that, at most.

So Bologna say 20m (euros or pounds, whatever) but unless there's a bidding war I'd expect it'd be much closer to £10-12m. Seems clear they're desperate to offload him though.

Risky signing. Could become either of Silva or Cole in the premiership.

Personally I think he'll be great if this goes through.
