Great stuff if we pay him off. It gives Downing and Adam more time on the field of play. We'll easily finish above Everton now.

Where is the logic in paying off the last year of his contract instead of keeping him and paying it anyway.

Sad thing is, Downing, Spearing, Cole, Carragher and Adam wouldn't even get a game for Everton.

Presumably to free up wages and a squad space for an incoming player.

Anyway, Bellamy is one of my favourite players over the last few years. Not going all accountanty on here, but if we pay him a reported £4 million NOT to play for us, how does that benefit us? We either pay him £4 million over the last 12 months of his contract or we pay him £4 million in a lump sum. The first way, we get 25 - 30 games off him and maybe 10 goals if he's better than anyone else in training. The second way, we get fuck all, but all for the same outlay. Which one benefits us? I love the lad, but if he wants to leave to play for Cardiff and he doesn't want to play for us next season, why the fuck should we pay him anything? If he wants to play for them and take a pay cut, well that's his choice so we should get ruthless and not pay him for the privilege of leaving us. At worst, if we're fucking stupid enough to do it, we should only pay the difference between his Liverpool salary and his Cardiff salary, but I don't even see why we should do that. I genuinely do not believe the football world sometimes.

Great post. Sometime a move away is beneficial to both parties, and this is one of those cases

Not if we're paying him off it doesn't. If he wants to go, why should it come out of our end?

The latter part of the above statement might be true but if we pay him the same amount of wages in a one off payment just to fuck off now then the first part certainly isn't.

:lmao :lmao

I'm not sure whether the reports of us paying off his final year are true. But you're right it doesn't make sense that we'd try to offload his wages by paying off his wages, which is why it seems to me that this may not be entirely true

Absolutely. If this move is, indeed, driven by Bellamy (and Rodgers certainly seemed to want him and Maxi to stay) then there shouldn't be a question of a pay-off, should there? Effectively they are handing in transfer requests.

Does it free up wages? He has one year left and we're paying him the same whether he stays or goes.

No fucking way is it going to be the full £4m if it's anything (and I can't see why it would be, as No666 says he's basically handing in a transfer request, which I suspect we'll make him do as a formality) we will 'save' money over what we would have otherwise have spent.

Remember he was very happy to see out his contract at city even though he wasn't going to play if he were interested in maximising his financial return out of this situation he'd just stay.
When your Mum used to pick you up from school and you'd run out and be like 'Mummy I got 9/10 in the spelling test today', would she go 'phenomenal, son'.

When and why did so many people become obsessed with wages?

On the one hand it does my fucking head in, especially when we have posters telling us, like its fact, how much each of our players earn, but on the other hand it is relevant and they need to be factored in when buying players, but thats the clubs lookout, not ours.

exactly, its not even anything to do with us, who gives a flying fuck how much they earn, and why do people cry about it "oooooh coles on £100k a week", so fucking what, not like we are paying it out of our banks is it. i'd say 70% of posts on this main board involves the word wages or some kind of reference to money.

He took a wage cut to come to us, nothing against Bellamy but why should we pay him off and not let Cardiff pay (as he's going to be playing for them). Surely not paying him off means we have more to spend on an incoming player?

I think this is a perfectly fair stance to take, but I'd hope that people who adopt it aren't the same ones questioning why we don't spend more money in the transfer market or buy Players X, Y, and Z.

Keep Bellamy for his last year, hoping he plays like he's played at the Olympics. Can still be very effective for 60/65 mins. Pay the money for Allen, already shows maturity for his young age.

Tony Barrett not exactly been on the money recently LFCwise and I dont believe for a second we would pay off the remaining year of Bellamy's contract, it just doesn't make sense. Maybe a bonus of some sort as a gesture of good will and to say thanks but certainly not pay off the whole year. FSG are still sports people/managers when all is said and done, and surely there is no way they will sign off that.
