Fernando Redondo?

One of my favourite players ever. A pure 'footballer'.

Agreed - except that he is comparatively shite with his back to goal!
False number 9.....

I don't know what it is really and it all seems like bollocks to me, but I believe it solves the problem.

A bit suprised now low Decos average position is on the lists. Zidane is head & shoulders over all of them, he was a genius.

Xavi Hernandez is a genius, just as Zizou was.
Believes in Brendan.

I see your Redondo and raise you a Clarence Seedorf. So many to mention.

What a partnership that was at real madrid but still think Redondo was better out of the two players. But agreed so many to mention, plus hard to rank when they all play different roles and were all magnificent in their own ways.

Belter of a thread.

 5. Ballack. Belter of a player on his day, somehow just a bit of a loser in big games.
 4. Alonso. I think he's absolutely magnificent, easily the best player I have seen in the Liverpool red.

To me, he is. Mind you, at the age of only 16  I never saw the likes of Dalglish, Barnes, Rush et al in a live game.

This is not disrepecting Stevie Gerrard. I love the man to bits for his quality performances and loyalty to the club. But for me, Alonso, on ability, has just that little edge over Gerrard.
It's just sex and violence, melody and silence.

In reference to this thread does it matter?

Were judging them as players overall, and Gerrard has been the better player over the course of their careers, even at Liverpool Alonso had 2 decentish seasons that had Rafa willing to exchange him for Barry and then 1 incredivle season after that, yet some people would still rate him higher than Gerrard.

I was under the impression it was a thread specifically about midfielders? I'm basing my opinion on that, and Alonso was and still is a better midfielder than Gerrard IMO, who incidentally had his 2 best seasons for Liverpool on the right and behind Torres.

As a complete footballer, there's no question Stevie is better though.

Iniesta's exclusion is shocking mind you.

In regards to all the posts about Iniesta (and yeah, like I said he'd be second behind Zidane in my list of best midfielders from the last 20 years easily), I'm pretty sure the guy who made this image made it about players who were all from a certain generation. Everyone in that picture is above 30. Still, the exclusion of Seedorf for Deco is glaring.

1. Zidane
2. Gerrard
3. Xavi
4. Alonso
5. Pirlo
6. Deco
7. Vieira
8. Ballack

That's cause Scholes played for us.. surely?

Based on what? Ability? Longevity? Success?

Gerrard
Pirlo
Xavi
Zidane
Vieira
Ballack
Lampard
Scholes
Deco
Alonso

Or something.

Iniesta somewhere up the top.

I would say a combination of the three, but ability and longevity being probably the biggest of those.
