100 players who shook the Kop - 6 years on
« on: June 12, 2012, 05:45:50 PM »
Bored with the lack of football and having to watch this Sunday league rubbish from Poland and Ukraine on the telly. So been looking at the "100 players who shook the Kop" list again, can't believe it's now 6 years since the list was compiled.

You can find the list here: http://liverpoolfc.wikia.com/wiki/100_Players_Who_Shook_The_Kop

Would be interested to know how that list might have changed if we consider it from a 2012 perspective. Should any of our current players make it in? At whose expense?

Certainly Torres should be there (both for his goals and for the nature of his departure, had a massive impact on us for good and ill). And surely Mascherano should be included - or did he not have enough impact.

I reckon Reina might have cemented a spot higher than No. 61. Should Kuyt be in there? Has Carragher lost the lustre that had him up as high as No. 7?

Carra has the second highest appearances for the club and has won everything apart from the League. It's fashionable to (and I reserve the right to) criticise him, and he deserves criticism on several counts, but he has been a fantastic servant to the club on and off the pitch and is one of the few one-club players left. 7th? Maybe not, but there are an awful lot of attackers at the top of the list and very few defenders. I'd have Hughes and Hansen above him, but neither do I think he looks out of place in that top 20.

Torres easily makes the list, probably top 40 given how fantastic he was for us.

It shouldn't just be based on his performances though. Other things matter as IMO.

if it shouldnt be based off of performances then bob paisley would be number 1 or 2.

I think it should, none of us really know what these guys are like in real life.  The reason they shook the kop at all is because their performances were so amazing that they gave us hope, more so than other players in our history

As much as i like him, Luis Garcia is obviously too high, but when this was compiled he had just fired us to the Cup Final a year after sending us to Istanbul.

I'd also say Cisse is too high and i think it would be doubtful Momo would get in the 100 now.

Torres would be in the top 20 I think. Broke records left and right before he went to Chelsea. Think Kuyt and Lucas might be deserving of a place too.

Feeling towards Jamie Carragher a little different back then.

Funny how some players are better thought of in their absence too, think Sami would be much higher now than when he played for us.

This isn't something that's changed since 2006, but I always thought Barnes should be a little higher.

Torres, Lucas, maybe Agger on the list since then.  Suarez for sure if he stays another year or two.
Managers who have won fewer than three European Cups: Ferguson, Mourinho, Guardiola, Saachi, Hiddink, Hitzfeld, Clough, Happel, Trapattoni, Cruyff, Michels, Lobanovsky, Capello, and many more.

To be fair if people are voting they are a lot more likely to vote for people they have seen aren't they? Just natural and honest. The results are always going to be skewed towards the era with film because our judgements on others are based on other's accounts rather than our own.

It is a testament to Hodgson that he manages to make the list at all considering the lack of people who would have voted and have seen him play! Its just a shame there's no footage of someone who was clearly such a great player for the club.

I made this point in a previous thread about the current '100 best' series on LFC TV

Don't wish to be a killjoy as there some cracking marches but it should be emphasised that this is the 100 best Premier League games and not the 100 best league games and certainly not the 100 best games.

It's another reminder that football only started in 1992 and this series is concentrating on an era completely dominated by United.
I realise that this means that footage is available so it's relatively easy for LFC TV to fill space over the summer, but a bit of a shame that we aren't celebrating all the great league matches in our 120 year history. There are one hundred years worth of league fixtures that predate this.

We get a lot of stick for living in the past - but there is a reason why we're proud of our history.
There's surely enough stories out about great matches that pre-date this. Even if it were 10 minute mini programmes I'd like to learn more about great matches that featured Billy Liddell or Albert Stubbins and the like.
I'd like to hear a lot more from people still alive about LFC matches and see any images that are still around.

Glad that LFC TV is still free on 434, but these matches are a small fraction of our history.

Instead of being force fed this 'EPL' bollocks the club should be doing a lot more to educate on the entire history of the club. 120 years is a long time and there's always lessons to be learnt and stories to be told from history.

Agree on this current one, but the 'Players who Shook the Kop' isn't a post-1992 one at all.

That list was clearly voted by the majority of the younger generation at the time.

Look at some of the players in that list and where they are.

Terry Mac 34th
Gordon Hodgson 54th
Geoff Strong fucking 94th!!

Even Eric Meijer made it at 99.

Ridiculous
That right peg hits it and you see the future arc of the ball and time goes al gluey like a Dali painting, and for a second there's a 20yr old StevenGerrard and your young self cheering him on through the prism. His big smile fades in an the net is shivering and J.Hart's trying not to look grateful for the privilege of being that close to greatness

Instead of being force fed this 'EPL' bollocks the club should be doing a lot more to educate on the entire history of the club. 120 years is a long time and there's always lessons to be learnt and stories to be told from history.
Therein lies the problem.
The club is only interested in where the next buck is coming from.
To be fair to .tv (Official site) 100 PWSTK was a brilliant idea but lost it's way in Big Brother type nominations and voting. The result of which ended in above travesty.

I'd like to hear a lot more from people still alive about LFC matches and see any images that are still around.

Sadly this fountain of knowledge is slipping away from us day by day.
And to be frank it's OUR FAULT !
Grandads mainly, do not have internet access.
The only way we can ensure our clubs History is preserved forever before it's too late, is for us to Write their stories on their behalf.
I wrote all the Liddell stories on behalf of my Dad.
I wrote the Roaring 20's series on behalf of my Grandad.
Unless other fans start doing the same it will all be lost.

If you want your Father and Grandfathers to leave their mark in the History of LFC
TRY TALKING TO THEM !
Ask them who their favourites where from each decade, 20's 30's 40's etc
Visit lfchistory.com pull their profile pic and write up and then add your grandads story of the player.

Not only will this leave a permanant record of the Player it will also leave your Grandads thoughts preserved in time.
