Your Overall EURO 2012 thoughts
« on: June 10, 2012, 10:52:16 AM »
I think it has started fairly open... The only cagey game imo was yesterdays Germany-Portugal match. I was impressed by the Russians (not this  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iE3Q3MTqlY&feature=relmfu )...

Slightly disapointed by the Officials...especially in the opening game... The Greek getting sent off was laughable! You could argue neither were fouls.

One thing that strikes me and a Major relief... No Vuvuzela! Nice to hear the fans for a change.

Im off out there on thursday (Kiev)... Looking forward to the atmosphere, meeting new sets of fans, the locals ect... Gonna tuck into local food too...  :wave

I like it. Much, much better games then the ones at the World Cup. Russia look the best side so far - Germany struggled a bit with their new form against Portugal and don't look particularly razer sharp in the attacking sense. They could do with Gotze on the pitch against teams parking the bus - would arguably bring more impact then Ozil in breaking the defence up.

Holland looked good in spite of their defeat, but they're in serious trouble now and their defence is going to concede goals against Germany and Portugal. Can their attack make up the goals? Not if Van Persie's short term form is anything to go by.
I know what you mean. I really wish the Madrid born former Real Vallodolid, Osasuna, Tenerife, Extremadura, Valencia and Inter Milan manager stayed loyal and faithful to a foreign club that sacked him by never managing another club again. Burn him.

From what I've seen the football has been good. The mentality of the so called smaller teams has been positive in that they think they can win.

For me the tournament will only get better once our Irish and English boys get going. Both teams should have the belief they can win the thing. There's no outstanding candidate for the tournament so far and two of the more fancied teams in Portugal and Netherlands could get kbnocked out.

Most impressive player so far:

Germany's goalkeeper

Absolutely loving it at the moment. Fans are good, generally open games so far and I love watching top players in pretty much every game. Every day there's something to look forward to. It's just a problem that I've got exams on Tuesday and Wednesday and I've done bugger all revision!

Can some one explain to me why the extra officials behind the goals are always on the same side as the linesman?
Wouldnt it make more sense to have them on the other side of the goal since the linesman has a pretty good view of the near post but not of the far post?

That Dutch fellow in the Ireland - Croatia game was pretty solid and let the game flow whenever possible, which I thought was refreshing.

Thank God, it looks to be excellent so far. Some great football been played, and we had a great opening day with that Russia-Czech match. The Spain-Italy game was surprisingly open as well. A far cry from the hoof-fest we saw in 2010 in South Africa.. biggest international disappointment I've ever seen.

Great games this far, but as a whole it bothers me more than it should with the hooliganism, racism and the booing of each other's national anthems and possession.

However, it seems that every group has it's own story that could unfold in thousands of ways. It's truly fantastic to watch when you know every team and how they got there. Been lucky enough to see every game this far, and I hope it'll continue for at least a while longer.

I think it has been better than the last Copa America and World Cup, but I was expecting more to be honest. All of Holland-Denmark, Germany-Portugal, England-France and Spain-Italy matches were a level or two below my expectations. I thought it'd be entertaining ties, when in fact only Spain-Italy had some entertaining quality moments, though even that was a bit below my expectations.

Hopefully though, in the 2nd round, things pick up. I want Holland, Germany and Spain attacking full force.

Better than the world cup.

The top teams have been disappointing. Only Italy played really well. The most anticipated strikers all have been average as well.
Many groups are a lot more exciting than previously thought.

The coaching / organising gap has really closed now. Gone are the days when one nation had truly superior players and organisation v another. It's great, and this is arguably a tougher tournament than the World cup. Enjoying it so far, even the cagey matches like england v france.

I remember looking forward to the WC 2010 for eternities but feeling disappointed once it began. The only thing I remember from the two opening matches is Tshabalala's goal and celebration.

With this Euro it's the other way around, I wasn't expecting much from the opener but it turned out as a real thriller, and my own country surprised me against Holland. Also, I'd figured Spain-Italy would be too tactical and defensive but both teams were really going at it

You know what's great. Every team still has a decent chance chance of qualifying except for Ireland, and perhaps Sweden. Often a team will be down and out, but look at where they stand:

Czechs: Got battered first match, but have Greece and Poland to come, could easily qualify go through
Poland & Greece: Got a point on the board, anyhting could happen against Czechs and Russia
Russia: Not assured of going through by any means

Denmark: Great start, 2 points or a win would see them through, could get something from Portugal
Portugal: Spirited performance against Germany, could easily beat Denmark and anything could happen against Holland
Holland: Not down and out yet, put the shooting boots on and they can beat anyone
Germany: Probably through

Italy: Good against Spain, came through the hardest fixture with a valuable point. Could well win other 2
Spain: Fully expect them to beat Ireland and Croatia
Croatia: Got 3 massive points on the board, given themselves a decent chance at qualifying with one unexpected result
Ireland: Stranger things have happened

Ukraine: Did what they had to do, put pressure on England and France who haven't exactly dealt well with pressure recently.
France: Will fancy their chances of winning other 2 games
England: Ditto
Sweden: Will be aware that a win against England and a draw against France or vice versa could see them through. Think they're out to be honest, even if England go with them.

Hopefully the positions are still intriguing after round 2, but its nice to see that Denmark and Ukraine are right in there, and Group A is a toss-up as far as I can tell, at least for 2nd place. Holland are gonna have to come out all guns blazing in their other group games, as are Ireland (lol,) Denmark will be fighting tooth and nail to capitalise on their Dutch win, and Sweden will be looking at the England match and seeing signs of promise for their matches against us and France.

I think Germany and Spain are the only 2 who'll walk through the group stages
