Inside a Liverpool FC Press Conference by Rhi
« on: July 11, 2012, 09:15:43 AM »
On Monday, RAWK sent regular scribe, Rhi, to the pre-USA LFC Press Con @ Anfield. What was said is obviously online for everyone to see, but her report (also available in the Writer's forum), has some interesting snippets, too. It was a fantastic opportunity, made possible by the club, which allowed RAWK and other forums, to be part of the press conference and ask questions. Is this to be a regular thing? Watch this space.

From Rhi:

*************

I've set foot inside Anfield hundreds of times. Every single time I've clicked through a turnstyle. Every time until Monday.

On Monday I was given the opportunity to attend a Liverpool FC press conference, courtesy of RAWK. They were invited, along with various other big players in the Liverpool FC fan community, to "cover" the press conference.

Allowing certain members of the LFC fanbase to attend things like this is a step that should be welcomed – cautiously. There's not a Liverpool fan in their right mind who wouldn’t want to see more first-hand information getting straight to the fans, as opposed to via the national press. The national press who are there to sell newspapers and couldn't care less about the mass hysteria their spin can cause. More fan presence will – hopefully – give a more balanced view of what was said in the press conferences (especially the ones that aren’t screened live). This is a positive step by Jen Chang and the Liverpool FC communications team.

Now I know most of you will have watched the press conference live, or read the quotes that surfaced afterwards, so instead of rehashing too much of that, I'll focus on my opinions on Rodgers and the Liverpool set-up.

Rodgers speaks very impressively. I know it's been said, and I know this is not a particularly original nor insightful opinion, however it really is the case. He speaks well. Calm, considered, intelligent, and always very much in the Liverpool mould. By that I mean that he takes care to put the focus on values such as togetherness, simplicity, hard work, and fighting for the club. At this stage I don't know whether these values are inherent in Rodgers, or whether he's just been very well trained / briefed in what to say, but there's no doubting that he could hardly talk a better game.

Except perhaps those Andy Carroll quotes, which were at best ill-advised.

But you hear / read / see him say things like this, and you can't help but think that he understands what is expected of a Liverpool manager. What is expected of Liverpool as a football club.

Quotes
"As a manager you have to have a feel of the history of the club, but it's also about the present and the future."

"This is not just an English club – it's an international one."

"I have found in my experience that the best players are the best people. You find that those guys at the top end are the ones whose challenge is to work hard and improve."

"We'll take the Europa League very seriously. I believe that if you're in it, you want to try and win it. That's my feeling on it."

It was brilliant to see Lucas back in the fold, though he was keen to stress that while he is doing some training with the squad, he's not training with them every day. It was equally lovely to hear Rodgers say that he remembers watching Lucas captain Brazil at youth level and being impressed with him. But these couple of sentences by Lucas pretty much sum up his contribution to the press conference...

Quote
"I’ll be back at the same level as I was, because I am working really hard to recover, and the players I have beside me will help me. I just have to be patient again. But my whole time at Liverpool has been like that, so I’m looking forward to meeting the players coming back from the Euros and looking forward to the start of the season."

Poor Jay Spearing seemed a little bit nervous when he got the chance to speak, but despite that, spoke well. He spoke of having had to watch players of the calibre of Gerrard, Lucas, Alonso and Mascherano being ahead of him in the team, and him just wanting to work hard so that the manager knows he's available and ready when called upon. Whatever you think of his qualities as a central midfielder, you can never fault his attitude or his professionalism.

The over-riding theme of the press conference though, was that the club is calm, together and working hard to improve in all areas. At this stage, I'm not sure we can ask for much more than that.

All in all, a very interesting day, and a unique experience. We’re grateful to the club for the opportunity to attend a press event and see how these things work. If I behaved myself well enough, RAWK may even get the chance to attend a few more press conferences over the course of the season.

Well done Rhi, enjoyed that and to RAWK itself.

Nice to get a true inside track.

From here on in its all FSG's doing. Good or bad they will stand or fall by the decisions they have made in the summer of 2012. Lets hope they have gotten it right.

Great opportunity to get the stories first hand.
Have we asked anyone to represent RAWK in USA ?

It was a fantastic opportunity, made possible by the club, which allowed RAWK and other forums, to be part of the press conference and ask questions. Is this to be a regular thing? Watch this space.

In my view, it would be in the club's best interest to have supporters present at those news-conferences. As has been mentioned it gives them the opportunity to hear what the manager (or whoever is talking at that press conference) is saying in his own words and forward it to fellow supporters. It would cut out the middle-man (= the media with all their agendas and/or need to sell papers) in a way. It would open the door for a more "neutral" way of reporting.

One difficulty with that could be, that most people have jobs and will not be able to visit the club's press-conferences on a regular basis, and I'd imagine the club will want to know with whom they are dealing. So, if that's a problem, I'd just have every LFC-community that's invited name a pool of people who'll be dealing with the club and have them over for a quick talk. Telling them what's acceptable and what's not and to get to know them. That would cost a little time and effort, but it would be worth it in the end, in my view. Because you could strengthen the bond with the supporters with very little effort after you have made initial contact. After all, those press-conferences are held anyway no matter if there are five people or fifteen...

I think they're much further with this in US sports, they even invite people from fansites to pre-season camps to do reports about the training and stuff.

That's pretty much what happened - 'RAWK' was invited and we found a member of the Scribe team who was able to attend. If Rhi is unavailable in the future there will doubtless be others who would be more than happy to attend and represent the site in an appropriate manner. :wave

Sounds great! Obviously for the club it's free media coverage - what goes out on the fan sites is gaining in importance, compared to the local and national press.

Rhi, can you get into a bit more detail how it all worked? From walking in to leaving? How many people were there, did they make you wait for ages, and so on? I haven't really got a good idea what it's like, all you see on the TV is the people behind the desk and hear a couple of muffled questions of people you don't see!   :)

Cracking read that Rhi - you must have been loving it! were you able to ask questions (if you'd wanted to) or were you just there to observe?

We were able to ask questions, and nothing was off-limits. However the bulk of the questions were asked by Liverpool FC TV and Sky. It's pretty brutal trying to get a word in between the professionals - though I wasn't attending with questions in mind. For me and for RAWK it was more about observing what went on. This time!

I didn't put that stuff in the OP originally because honestly? There's not too much to it!

It's all quite relaxed. We had to sign in, before going up to have a quick chat with the press officer. Then it's literally a case of hanging about and having a chat to whoever else is around until the press conference starts (as all the techy types buzz about trying to make sure the sound and cameras and everything are working!). There were perhaps 6 or 7 camera crews, then a very basic set up of seats for the journalists and bloggers - of which there were maybe 15 - 20. There was the odd photographer snapping about the place, too. At no point was any attempt made to censor any questions. Obviously there was a general professional feel about the place, and if we get a chance to go again, we will be expected to act appropriately! But honestly, there's really very little to it. What you saw on TV is what you get, except with various members of the press stood / sat behind the cameras with their notepads and their dictaphones! And a cuppa. :)

It was really interesting to be on the other side of things, though. As someone above quite rightly says, in the US there is much more of this sort of thing. Fansites are regularly part of press conferences or briefings, so hopefully that is something that will be transferred over to Liverpool FC too.

Nice one Rhi - glad you got the opportunity and enjoyed the experience!

My only thought on this is the whole emphasis in the thread on attendees acting in the appropriate manner! I presume fansites etc will only be invited along for the less controversial press calls. Could you imagine the hell if fans were invited late down the H&G saga road? Or for the departure of King Kenny??! There woulda been bleedin' murder :P (And correctly so :D)

To answer some of the questions above then I think that this is a Jen Chang initiative, and a good and overdue one.  He has told us that we should get opportunities to attend all Anfield based press conferences, the pre-match Melwood are more problematic because they have very limited space.

He is also hoping to have regular Q&A sessions between Brenno and representatives of the various forums/blogs/websites.

Nice touch from Jen. Encouraging start so far from both him and BR. Simple but effective.

I think 8 different blogs/fansites were invited. As far as I know, 4 made it. RAWK, TAW, Redmen TV and Live4Liverpool. The rest couldn't make it mostly because it was pretty short notice. You have to remember that most people don't make a living out of this. Everyone has day-jobs. I was lucky that I was able to be flexible this time. The other sites weren't so lucky, but I'm sure there'll be more in attendance next time.

To be honest, I don't think that's how it works. To hear something "off camera" you have to know people, i.e. be there for a while and meet those people "outside" their work-place (like that guy who went from the Echo to NotW [forgot his name] going to Switzerland and covering what's going on in the training-camp and covering the matches). You'll get the opportunity to sit at the hotel-bar and get talking to people. Not necessarily the press-guys but people around them or people involved with the team. That's the way you get "inside-info". I might be wrong, but I doubt that this happens at a press-conference... ;)

One thing I'd like to know is, if there is actually is something like the "press-huddle". Raphael Honigstein wrote about it in a book about English football. He said that after (almost) every news-conference journos were getting together (mostly those from tabloids), deciding on what were the most important things that were said (i.e. basically writing up the headlines for the next day). I am writing for a local-newspaper in a small federal-state here in Austria and I couldn't imagine doing something like that...

You mean as in match reports or press cons?

Both if we can find a responsible person who will be present.
I know John Mac usually goes, but perhaps it may be better to nominate a "OUR MAN in USA"

Was great that Rhi - really enjoyed it. :)

I recall reading an interview where Rafa said that's what happens after each press conference and how it's so different from the journo's in Spain. And from what i see, that makes sense. All newspapers release the same exact news on the same day. It's happened too many times for it to be a coincidence.
