When you look at the team formations some of you are putting up they look very good.
Why the hell did we play so badly last year ?

Even without massive spending I'm starting to be optimistic about our chances next season.

We didn't actually play that bad, can count on one hand our really poor performances,on the other hand our average performances and the rest of the games we played teams off the park but couldn't put ball in net.

Probably but id rather we swerve talkshyte as much as possible particularly after the suarez affair.

I just refuse to listen to it. Load of shite anyway.

You got to think that these twats along with the rest of the media want to do one thing. And that is make money on the back of tragedy or someone else's misfortune. As much as I love the club, Kenny and Luis we had some really shitty advice surrounding the Evra.

I'm not excusing Talkshite, condoning what they do or blaming Luis for anything. The FA were a bunch of shithouses but we handled the whole situation really poorly. Much of this was in the light of the media - which is why I think Ayre and Rodgers are doing the rounds with the media.

---------------------Pepe--------------------
Johnson----Skrtel--------agger----Enrique
------------Lucas-----Henderson-----------
------------------Aquilani-------------------
---Gerrard-----Carroll------Suarez--------

Good team, but I think we need a clinical striker if we want to get top four next season.

Number 1 priority IMO is a striker who can finish.

I'm just hoping his methods translate effectively, even better if it happens quickly but as long as you can see progression week after week and an understanding of what he's doing and in turn what he wants the players to do then i would be more than happy. In a perfect world under Rodgers I would hope we would be able to play the kind of football he played at Swansea but obviously with a higher calibre of player here it would be even more effective. At the end of the day he's got a lot more to work with here. Suarez, Gerrard, Lucas, Reina, Agger are leagues apart from any Swansea player, without being disrespectful. So IF he can get things working how he wants then there's no reason not to be optimistic. Not win the league optimistic but a vast improvement in the league optimistic.

If they are still with us.

She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns

Not a Johnson fan, Andy?

Andy feels and justifably so, that Glen is not a strong defensivly as Kelly, and would like us not to allow as many goals, but rather keep more clean sheets.
Our future is bright with the young players.- Brendan Rodgers

Think we might see something like below. Obviously depends on Cole and Aquilani. Personally don't think Aquilani likes being here (England) and don't really think he is suited to this strong aggressive pressing game based on his appearances for us. I think Cole has a stronger case because even though he struggled he always put a solid graft in. I think we do really need a strong quality wide player who scores regularly.

Quote
But Rodgers, who worked with Cole during his time at Chelsea, hinted that he would now like to see both players stay put and fight for their place.

"They're certainly talented players," he told the club's official website.

"I know Joe well from my time at Chelsea (as part of the backroom staff). He's a wonderful talent."

Rodgers added: "The boy Aquilani is a wonderful talent and a terrific player but he might not be able to settle.

"He might not be able to adapt to the country so you've got all those issues and sometimes you're not aware of that until you sit down and speak to the people."

What was Swanseas away record like last season? Quite poor wasnt it? What did they play like away? That would be the biggest concern for me.

Did you expect him to win 10 away games with Swansea? If that was his away record with Liverpool I would be concerned, but he just kept the number one favourite for relegation in the Premier League without spending fortunes, and done it with a very comfortable margin to spare.

Dont think i made my point well, the main concern is the big difference between home and away form, whats the reason for it? do they play differently away from home?

i would like to think the deal for dirk was done weeks ago, and during the meetings with rodgers, he was told dirks deal was done.
Above all, I would like to be remembered as a man who was selfless,

I'll like to think that all deals were frozen until Rogers had at least time to talk to players and id like to think that has happened in this case. If not there may be trouble ahead.

Yeah this deal was well along the way by the time Rodgers was unveiled. Doubt Rodgers was worried - Kuyts wages saved plus the 1 million plus might give us an extra 5 million for him to put towards his players.

So many threads talking about Rodgers & his tactics, it's hard to keep up!

So, after watching the MOTD vid where Rodgers discusses his premier league all time dream team.
Shearer & Savage choose 442, Rodgers chose a 4231, and selecting players to suit the system, as opposed to simply the best 11 players.

This is his Selection, The full backs are solid. Both defenders are tough (why include Terry?).
He has a combative MD alongside a more fluid passer, though he mentions both are fiesty.
Above this he has Zola to complete the passing triangle in centre mid.
There are 2 wide players who can be very direct, can cut inside or go wide, and have an eye for goal.
Up top there is a proven goal scorer who knows where the 6 yard line is.

How could this manifest itself in the Liverpool team?

Well, ofcourse Pepe is in goal. Solid Goalkeeper just like Schmeichal.
Agger & Skrtel in the centre of defence, both take no shit, but Agger has the ball playing librero talent.
Johnson fits perfectly on the right wing, and of the 2 full backs will be the more forward playing one
Enrique on the left side is solid defensively, but a bit clueless in attack. I reckon Rodgers can improve him.
In the middle, Lucas is Keane from that above team, Can henderson or Aquilani fit the role of Scholes? In light of creating a passing triangle, i reckon they can.
The centre of that midfield triangle, I'm not sure we have the player for that role yet, Maybe Aquilani or Cole if we don't get anyone, but i think this is the spot Rodgers will definitely buy a player for.
Id have Gerrard & Suarez either side of the hole. Up Top, well Andy doesn't fit with the ideal selection of Rodgers, but this is the spot he will play. Will Rodgers go out and get a fox in the box as an alternative?
We will see.

Well created conman, I like it. However, despite talk of limited transfer funds I am wondering if plans are too reliant on current personnel.

Will BR consider Henderson is someone he needs to work with over a year, so he may bring someone in immediately or will he think he can improve him in a few short months?

SG cannot be regarded as a regular starter mate, even before Kenny was let go I said they need to buy a fulcrum player, someone that the side fits around and when SG plays its a bonus.

And of course that team or set up can easily morph in to a 433 which is well discussed in VdM's thread.

You know what though mate, its all very, very early.

yea, very early & Gerrard should be considered a bonus. The above is an attempt at a best fit.

For me, he needs to buy:

LB backup
DM backup
RW
Someone to play the hole.
Striker (fox in the box)

I really rate Jonjo, but I cannot find a position which would suit him well in this system, the 2 centre mid slots are not for running midfielders, they seem more in tune with players who sit back and hold the position.

I reckon Henderson will improve with this system & by playing next to Lucas. The system will ensure everyone is mobile. This wasn't so apparent last season. Henderson is a player who will play one touch football, so i think he is perfect for Rodgers.

I can see Carroll thriving on Brendan. He was rotated too much with Kenny and not given a decent run of games.

Still need maybe a striker or someone behind the striker, depending if Suarez or Carroll gets the nod. Two pacey wingers, and maybe a few backup signings.

All this talk of Aquilani is a waste of time. Rodgers already intimates that its not footballing ability that stops him being at Liverpool, he has no wish to as the lad just can't settle to life over here. He will stay in Italy of that I am sure.

We have wasted a lot of money paying out managers contracts over the last 2 years,
£7m to Swansea, and it must have been close to that for Rafa as well, and Hodgson would have got a wad too.
Kenny refused a pay out ?

But I guess we have wasted more on over priced signings.

Rodgers first test will be how he performs in the transfer stakes, with what ever money he is allowed to spend,
then the Europa qualifier, so still a lot more talk until we see him in action.

Only 5 points behind Liverpool though.

My memory of swansea's season was that they took their  foot off the gas when safety was assured, but that wikipedia page shows that their second half of the season was considerably better than their first, and they even had a 4 game losing streak in the 2nd half!

I think that Aquilani would work a lot better then Henderson in that position, and Henderson could develop off the bench, also I don't know whether Enrique will work, I'd prefer to have Johnson on the left and Kelly on the right.

Biggest myth on these boards.
I cannot understand why this myth persists even though our defensive record is so fantastic with Glen in there.
Glen not only does his job defensively, there are a lot of times when he even covers for Skrtel or Carragher or assists them more so than what is expected of him- Carra especially, because of his pace. He uses his pace and skill on the ball- not just for himself, but for his teammates at the back as well.

It's totally unfair to Glen that this persists. He WAS suspect defensively, but the player's developed that aspect over the years and now going into his prime, he's a solid attacking fullback with defensive skills that can are utilised effectively. Kelly sits back more than Glen, so it's natural that he will be seen as being more solid defensively. If Johnno did the same- as much as Kelly does, he'd be even better than Kells, Im sure.

EDIT: Scrap all that, I see what they mean. I'd point out though that we don't need that level of defensive solidity at fullbakc. Glen's defensive work is one of the best of those among attacking fullbacks. We need Kelly at CB- not fullback. It's overkill and we lose someone like Glen at fullback whenever we deploy him(Kelly). I'm hugely impressed with Kelly's defensive solidity- phenominal for his age, but that's about it- nothing else impresses me about him in an attacking sense(his crossing's not much better than Glen's), while both Glen's defense and attacking as well as his willingness/ability to assist his CB(s) are things that impress me about him on the right. Glen is much more mobile- turns on the axis, reacts quicker, great close-control and dribbling skill, can easily traverse the midfield and overlap(perfect when we're under pressure and acts as an outlet and a relieve)- with either skill or pace(not just pace) and manages to assist his partners better. Perfect for a fullback. Kelly's skills though are better suited to duking it out in defense and riding out attacks.

Andy feels and justifably so, that Glen is not a strong defensivly as Kelly, and would like us not to allow as many goals, but rather keep more clean sheets.

that has to be one of the most annoying assessments of glen, i'd expect a non lfc fan to say that

Sure he has already been out to the training camp mate.
