I was living on an island in the summer of 2005. I watched this game at Cafe Soito, Praia do Norte, Faial, Azores. It is a small village of white houses with orange roofs, and packed with Benfica fans. Benfica won the Portuguese league championship that year and the day they won it Cafe Soito was jam packed with people partying and celebrating. On May 25th the bar was empty except for me and a few friends. My two Manc supporting friends stayed home to watch the first half, and naturally showed up at half time to rub it in. "Liverpool are an embarassment", and "what a shame they made it this far; too bad Milan aren't playing a GOOD team" they said.

Thankfully, they stayed in the bar for the second half, the one half of football that I will never forget for the rest of my life. When it came to penalties I had to tell them to shut the fuck up as they were complaining about how terrible penalties were as a way to decide a championship. They could clearly see the writing on the wall and were trying to ruin my moment, and of course it didn't work. When Dudek batted away Shevchenko's penalty I tore out of the bar and ran through the streets screaming. It was raining, and I was crying, and I don't know if I've ever been happier.

Rafa sitting down for the pens, Gerrard's heroic header, Carra battling cramp, Smicer with the perfect sendoff, Xabi following up the penalty, the likes of Djimi Traore playing completely out of their depth...I will love that squad forever for giving me one of the best days of my life.

Great story.

To me, after all the joy it was the sense of relief that I remember. After getting told for years by people you know about winning the league, the atmosphere at the big european finals, winning that...when you spend so much time under Evans and Houllier not being quite there in the two big competitions, there's a fear that the club's done for good even if you're young. Irrational, but it's there nonetheless. With Istanbul, that vanished. I may never see us win the league, but I do know what winning the 'grand prix' feels like at least once. That's something to cherish for life as we now consider the merits of the Wigan v Swansea manager. One of them may take us there, but you know what lads, even if you don't I don't have that fear anymore.

Was watching videos of Istanbul on youtube all evening yesterday and then I saw the date and realised it was the eve of 25th. Best day of my life. Graduating from Uni didn't come close and that was spectacular. Don't think I've ever experienced unbridled joy like that day before or since. It wasn't one of those moments where you think you could die and you wouldn't mind... no sir, this was better. You wanted time to slow right up so you could live in it forever. I repeat best day of my life.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

Never seen that "fans eye view" video in the OP, so clicked on it as you do.....i'd forgotten there's something very strange about that night that happens everytime but always takes me by surprise - Stevie's goal - eye's well up, Vladi's goal - more emotion, Xavi's goal - floods of tears. Can't stop them. Happened when i listened to the Radio City match commentary for the first time last year. I'm like Pavlov's fuckin dogs. Great start to the day though  :)

I love Kelly Dalglish's comment on that goal in "One Night in May". "Don't hit it, don't waste it... Okay, hit it..." Probably how a lot of people felt... ;)

Still, the most memorable thing is the guy with the HJC-sticker on his jacket looking on in disbelief right after that goal... Gets me everytime I see it.

I don't think I have ever experienced such pandemonium as the moment when Vladi slotted home his goal. It was more mental at that moment than Xabi's equalizer, or even at the end of the match - it was the moment when everyone in that ground - Milan players included - realised what the script was. What a day.

On my knees screaming when Smicer scored.

Later heard that the phone rang, three feet away, in the corner of the room at that moment - my Dad calling.

Didn't even hear it ring.

Easily the greatest night of my life. The whole drama of getting to Istanbul. Then getting to the stadium. The sea of red making its way over the hill and there before your eyes was the Ataturk Stadium. The pain of the first half. The unbelievable joy of the second. The strees and worry of the extra time. And the sheer glory of the penalties. I treasure everything about those 2 days in Istanbul.

Thank you Liverpool and thank you Rafa. For you gave me the greatest single moment that I have ever felt.

Vladi's goal was the turning point. Gerrard's goal lifted spirits and gave us a chance, but Milan could have (and probably should have) closed ranks and kept it at 3-1.

As soon as the second hit the net, so soon after the first, we knew the momentum was with us and Milan were rocking. The equaliser seemed inevitable at that stage.

Best week of my life. We need to get back to those great european nights asap.
