Reds to reveal new manager on Friday
By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent

Liverpool plan to make the announcement of their new manager on Friday, ESPN understands. They have whittled their list of candidates down to Wigan's Roberto Martinez and Swansea's Brendan Rodgers, after a thorough search for the right man to replace Kenny Dalglish.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins met Rodgers on Tuesday to discuss his future at the club, with Rodgers believed to be interested in discussing the Anfield job with the Reds' owners.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan told ESPN that his manager is back in England but he is yet to speak to him. Informed that Liverpool are keen on Rodgers, Whelan said: "I hope they sign him but I have not heard from my manager yet."

Martinez had looked the clear favourite to be named Liverpool manager but his concerns over the mooted appointment of Louis van Gaal as sporting director, and his expected control over transfers, have swung a two-horse race back towards Rodgers.

However, Jenkins has shown marked reluctance to even grant Rodgers permission to speak to Liverpool, whereas Whelan has fulfilled his pledge to Martinez to allow him to go to a big club, should he wish to do so.

Amid growing speculation, Jenkins said of Rodgers on Monday: "We would like to confirm that there has been no contact from Liverpool and nothing has changed since our previous statement on the issue."

Fed up with the procrastinations of Liverpool, Whelan has given Martinez until Thursday to make his decision. Liverpool will take the next 48 hours to finalise their plans and an announcement is expected to be delivered on Friday.

Well Rafa would definitely have been interested but was neglected.

Wouldn't it be great if they flew in, decided to talk to Rafa as another option and he wowed them so much he just gets the job.  We're all sitting there thinking it's Martinez then BAM Rafa's back.  In the real world though it's more likely to be Martinez.  Can't see Swansea making official announcment that there's been no contact and then letting Rodgers go.  Fans would be in uproar.  If we stood a chance at Rodgers then Huw Jenkins wouldn't have said anything.

Technical Director seems to be a separate job. It's DoF and Sporting Director that are the same job I think.
Aah right. Seems Tech is a "supporting/complementary" role to both.

That's what we'll find out if he gets the job.
You may well be right, but like everyone else, it's guesswork.
Without repeating what has been said many times, I'm sure Valencia fans weren't overjoyed with Rafa's appointment, likewise Dortmund would have had major reservations about Klopp.
You take the risk and see what happens.
If he's got a proper plan and has proper support, I'm confident he can do a good job.
He's got a lot more managerial experience than Bob, Joe and Kenny had when they jumped into the hotseat

The same could be said for any manager in the early stages of their career though.  Rafa hadn't done much pre-Valencia so I doubt very much they were jumping for joy at that appointment.  Look at what Rafa achieved though.  Not saying Martinez would be the same but you never know with football.  He could turn into a very shrewd appointment.

Do the maths - last week FSG met Martinez. It was told he would be re-interviewed on Tuesday. Tuesday happens - we've been told Manager has been appointed. Who else is going to be!

Alas - how the mighty have fallen

To be honest I'm happy we have appointed him - it's going to end up like the Roy saga and guess what - the fans will be demanding rafa and I for one will be happy Rafa will be appointed albeit in a convoluted matter

From what I have heard, it was Rodgers all along.  Henry has been a very clever boy.  They knew that if Rodgers was chosen first off that we would be disappointed.  So how could they turn this negative into a positive?  They publicly courted Martinez, including photos taken with Henry, to lower expectations to Martinez.  Then, when they announce Rodgers on Friday, we are all over the moon.

I would be with Rodgers. His Swansea team play good football (certainly better than A.V.B. or Martinez) - imagine what he could do with us.
"He worshipped expertness of any kind. He loved his work passionately and had no tolerance for anything save for other single-track devotions. He was a master in his own field and felt no sympathy except for mastery. His view of the world was simple: there were the able, and there were the incompetent; he was not concerned with the latter."

Nobodys happy about it really, part from a few but what can we do? You can only give the manager a chance and if he doesn't get the results then i'm sure the fans will have something to say then.
