i can't say a bad word about wheelan from the snips i've heard over the season from him, he seems a guy true to his word and an old timer, he's also not daft, new managers always bring some players with them so he may if RM comes to us pull 20 million in, i'd be amazed if moses didn't follow

What I mean is that whatever Whelan says in the media should have 0 effect on the person leading the search for a replacement manager, be he Ayre or whomever.

Fair enough, I applaud you for giving Ayre and the owners the benefit of the doubt.

Like others on here I think Whelan is trying to scupper the deal.  Not sure if it will work, but if I was FSG I'd be furious at the unprofessionalism and asking Martinez to not pass any information to Whelan until discussions are concluded.

To be fair, it isn't ethical either for Martinez to not talk to his current employer regarding his status as an employee. What if Martinez suddenly announces hes Liverpool manager a day before the season starts? Whelan is out of order for talking about it, but Martinez can't keep quiet.

Bollocks. We approached his employer, and were given permission to speak to him. Given that Whelan's a mouthpiece, I can't imagine RM's prospective employers are happy with everything being fed back to him and subsequently the world.

Didn't Martinez have a superb record prior to Wigan?  I don't think any manager could have done better than he has working under Whelan really.

I'd be really curious to see some Valencia supporters' initial reactions 11 years ago when unproven 41-year-old Rafa Benitez was given the manager's job on the back of their club reaching two successive European Cup finals.

If you can't get the point I'm making: I think some of the fans who are up-in-arms over the potential appointment of Martinez need to wind their necks in a bit.

Its still correct business for Martinez to report to the man who currently employs him. If he didn't tell Whelan anything he'd be directly threatening WFC and Whelans business, which wouldn't be ethical. Whelan being a mouthpiece us just unfortunate.

There's something odd about all this.

We are led to believe we will interview 2 or 3 people
The journo's are saying Martinez hasn't been offered the job
Some ITK's are saying that they still expect Villas Boas to be offered the job
Whelan is saying Martinez has been offered the job

Does anyone think Whelan might be saying this to build up a backlash from Liverpool fans against Martinez's potential appointment in the hope that it puts FSG off making an offer?

The journos are feeding on scraps & 'ITKs' making up stuff as usual. At least we know Whelan is in contact with Martinez, he might be a loud mouth but sadly he probably is most credible if you cut through the rubbish.

I for one am not considering suicide like some, i think Martinez could be a great manager given a chance, comes across very well.

Especially if he is only part of a team, with a GM above him (like Aloysius Paulus Maria "Louis" van Gaal) even better.....

I wouldnt want him in charge of everything though as Whelan puts it...

That is the key to you statement.  If appointed, will he be given time and, if he is more importantly, how much time will be given?

tactically martinez is astute and a good thinker of the game , I doubt anyone can dispute that his brand of football is great to watch, wigan seem to play in clever patterns with every player knowing there options/outlets on the ball and the role they need to perform.

hopefully he will also be strong in phasing out players such as carragher and playing gerrard in the AM or RM roles. Initially the only thing which puts me off is that he's not a name which will attract players, however he is an engaging guy so that could make a difference perhaps. I wouldn't mind his appointment at all, Rafa was my number 1 choice though but I wouldn't be upset with Roberto though

How do you figure that? I don't recall a single statement by the club whatsoever?

We know they've asked for permission to speak to him and met him in the US; unless they go around wasting other clubs' time and dragging people away from their holidays for pointless meetings to throw everyone "off the scent" for some obscure reason (which could make sense with a player, but why would you with a manager?) then I think it's safe to conclude he's one of the leading contenders, if not the leading candidate.

Dave Whelan is really covering himself in glory isn't he. So unprofessional and embarassing. I suppose all that money he has makes him feel he can shoot his mouth off whenever he likes. Sad man.

He's now informing the world that fergie is likely to be retiring next year due to health problems, the man is unbelievable I think our owners should be putting a gag on him

How would you see the players fitting into that sort of formation? I think it would heavily rely on Danny Agger staying fit at the back.

Would be interesting because it places much more emphasis on Pepe returning to his sweeper role too.  The four I guess could be glenn, hendo, lucas and Downing. Wasn't it on the anfield Wrap they said Downing could be a left back.. this could be the next best thing!

A front three of stevie, carroll and suarez?

I think it'd be brown trousers time any time anyone attacked down our left hand side.

Think that pretty much sums up how I feel. Still don't believe a word Whelan says though. Guess time will tell, if it is Martinez and he hits the ground running then the support will get behind him. Problem is I love a good conspiracy theory and I bet we have all the top 7 teams from last season in our first 10 games, 6 of which will be away. He comes out of that with 20 plus points, I'll be happy!

If RM is to be named our next manager, good luck to him and really hope he will make us better. He seems a nice fella too.As a fan though,i just can't be excited for a manager that his achievements in the Premiership are avoiding relegation with Wigan in the last fixtures of each season(well at least the last years).
Stage 1.  Denial.
Rodgers has massive balls and he's just rubbed them all over everyones faces. Enjoy the sweat of a brave man.
