That's cool. I honestly don't know what any of my newer cards are actually worth because most of my collection consists of original set, the team rocket set (Dark Alakazam etc) and the trainers set (Blaine's Arcanine etc).

I cleared mine all out and made space and got money for them. I'm not going to need them anymore so I thought why not. Didn't have a Charizard though unfortunately.

I'm not entirely sure, but if I remember correctly, didn't Blaine's Arcanine have an attack that did 120 damage? If it's that one, I think he's worth Ł7-Ł10, because he's usable in the TCG.

Yeah it's got some massive attack.

Need to complete my set actually, had a look at them yesterday and I've got big gaps in each set. EBay it is!

Going to re-do the Elite four on white tonight. Hopefully there levels won't have jumped too much, I'm expecting low-mid sixties. If it's much higher than that I won't last the pace. Current team is Excadrill 63. Scrafty 63. Braivary 63. Darmanitan 63. Gyarados 70. Electivire 71. Pretty strong, over-trained the last two a bit, depend on them to get me out of any trouble. Unlike some, I actually quite like the grind pre-Elite Four. I'd actually like a Pokemon game to have a league a bit like the Anime's. Random strong trainers in a tournament style knockout where you only have three pokemon. It's then strategy beyond the 'he's a rock leader, put water type first.' If the game then put their levels at roughly your own, it'd be quite a challenge. Perhaps then you could join the Elite Four or they are a post game challenge, independent of the league, again similar to the anime. I'd also like it if you then had to defend this title after time passes, a new league each 'year' for example. Different trainers, some returning trainers. I know that's ambitious, but Game Freak need to show some serious ambition to kick the series on. Black and White were a good start with a lot of new stuff, hopefully the next installment will throw a lot more stuff in.

Just seen this thread now, used to love Pokemon. Reading through it has brought back some great memories! Think my favourite game was yellow, when Pikachu used to follow you around and at the start he hated you and you had to win him over. ;D Tempted to go have a look for them games tomorrow actually!

Gonna have to look for all my cards too seeing as some people are getting loads for them! Must have around 200-300 of them in the attic somewhere. ;D

New game out in October, Black 2 and White 2. Contrary to usual protocol and justifiable cynicism, they're actual proper sequels and expansions as opposed to a barely changed meld of the original two that is usually released. So this is no Crystal/ Emerald, it's a totally new continuation. Different character who starts in a new, different town. There's more gyms than the old game and a different Elite Four. The story is new, set a few years after the events of Black and White. There are also non- Unova Pokemon available from the start of the game. For example, Growlithe is catchable in the beginner forest (definitely getting one!). All in all it seems there's a raft of new features and anyone who enjoyed Black and White or just Pokemon games should pick it up. Already out in Japan and sold ridiculous amount of units. It's the last Pokemon game that will come out on the normal DS/ lite/ million iterations of a single console. Has 3ds-specific features.

Arcanine is obviously the coolest Pokemon ever. Will pick up B+W2, despite being a bit underwhelmed with the first one. Suppose I'm a million miles out of the target demographic now though.

You're not the only one mate. Yes, Arcanine is amazing, one of the best of a great original 151. Shame that him and Charizard share a type, because I'd have him in a lot more teams otherwise. Probably going to pick the water then catch Growlithe to compliment him in B+W2. Purposefully not looking at the rest of the new pokedex. Going in blind so it's a nice surprise when something I don't expect pops up. More fun that way, not knowing what pokemon there are or where they are.

Great thread, loved reading this. Brought back some memories!

The first pack I ever opened had a shiny Charizard. I think my love of Pokemon was set from that day. :P The TV show, cards, games were all brilliant!

Amazing first pack! I remember getting my Charizard. Back in the day, I used to get Ł1.50 a week for pocket money. One week all the shops had no stock of the cards (which was naturally the item I spent my money on) so I had Ł3 the following week. Went to the now defunct Safeways, bought two packs. One had Blastoise in it, the other Charizard. Coupled with the bag of sweets I'd eaten, I was probably hyper and wild for a good few days.

Other news, Black and White 2 are out to favourable reviews. The chief criticism is that they're a bit too close to Black and White, but they have a lot of new content. I'll probably pick it up when I go on holiday in July, by then the originals will be less fresh in my mind.

Time to revive this bad boy. The sixth generation of Pokemon has been announced, Pokemon X & Y. No more shades then. It's set for a simultaneous world release in October this year on 3DS. It looks to be the most overhauled Pokemon ever, and actually I really like the look of what they've done in the admittedly brief trailer.

Wish they'd make one for the PS3 or 360, give it an online mode similar to demon souls and let everyone compete in proper tournaments with Pokemon acquired from exploring the world.

Possibly.

Any would be awesome though IMO.

EDIT:
On a similar note, was rooting through the garage the other day and found a book with all my old pokemon cards in, got me in the mood to have a quick game so signed up for the online one the nostalgia came flooding back! ;D

The Pokemon games single handedly sell whatever handheld console Nintendo have out, they'd lose out on all that if they released one for their main consoles.

Bring original Pokemon back, heck don't mind next two gens as well but the ones now are just fucking atrocious.

Might even buy it but...

Shit used to be real with starters like Charmander, Squirtle or Bulbasaur.

The new ones just don't have the magic of the originals. There's a few good Pokemon, but mostly they just look a bit generic now, there's only so many magical monster ideas you can really have, and they've used all the best ones before.

Original 151 > All the others since, combined.

People are blinded by nostalgia. Some of the original 151 were really bland. A pokemon that looked like a pokeball, who evolves to a bigger pokeball. A whack a mole in the ground that evolves to three moles in the ground.

The original weren't always great in design.

Names were better though, more rememberable.

Blasphemers. Yeah some of them were bland, but to me that was how it went, you got an unremarkable one like a Pidgey, then BOOM! A fucking Pikachu comes at you and youre all like "oh man, what the hell is this!?".

The Gold/Silver versions had decent ones in them, but they just started getting weird or a bit generic and unmemorable. At least you remember Dugrtio and Voltorb, Im not even sure what this is:

They just kind of ran out of ideas, which is understandable given they tried to base them on real creatures, but it got to a point where they were making just odd versions of the same thing (ie: a dragon) or they were just reinventing something they had done before, ie a Venusaur becomes:

Best pokemon decision, ever.
I'm really pleased about it. The big wait in between Japan getting Black and White 2 and Europe meant my enthusiasm for picking it up faded and I've still not got it. I'll buy it when I go on holiday in July. Relax poolside with some pokemon. I think the argument is valid that there's a lot more generic designs in many of the new pokemon, but they churn out some good ones each generation and the mechanics are always getting better. Did anyone watch the trailer? The new battle mechanics look amazing. The starters actually look good too. I didn't like any of the B + W starters. The first gen just has so many iconic Pokemon and is so heavily imbued with nostalgia that it's difficult to look past them as the best set.

There will be over 700 Pokemon when this gen releases, will they ever decide enough is enough? Do people want more? It's getting closer and closer to 1000. I personally wouldn't mind a generation where there's no new pokemon, just a massive different environment with older 'mons. I'll be going into X & Y blind, I don't want to know anything about the game or see any Pokemon beyond the starters that I've seen already. Pokemon blackout until October so perhaps I'll be more impressed/ surprised at what pops up on my screen. Hopefully the 3DS has come down in price by then, because I'll be picking one up just for this.

It looks like, for only the second time in Pokemon history, the starters are of dual typing. Fire and Psychic, Water and Fighting and Grass and Dark I think. Which suggests they can all take each-other down with super effective moves. Fire and Psychic is a delicious starter combo. Moves like Flame Wheel and Confusion are often learnt early on, it'll be a badass in the early stages of the game. Grass and Dark is decent too. Water and fighting is a bit meh (assuming I've got the combinations correct) and the frog starter think is also the worst of the starters design wise I think.

I think some will be included, not sure about all. The preview trailer shows a Pikachu popping out of grass, but that might just be because of his popularity. Having said that, I do think he'll be in the game along with other Gen 1s.

I have Black 2 which I played in the holidays, completed it and got trading to find a decent team to play with online. But now whenever I play online I come up against people with say 500 wins and have obviously EV trained and have their pokemon to perfection, which I don't really have time to do, wish they could just match me with similar ranked players...

Nope, only the BASE forms (aka, first evolution) were confirmed to be pure types, like it's been in every pokemon to date
