Give the guy a f***ing chance!!!!!! For Fowlers sake!

He hasn't even been appointed, and already people are calling for his head.

People need to get a grip.

I won't give him dogs abuse. He seems like a nice chap (If in the thrall of Alex Ferguson and his LMA arse kissers). He seems a perfectly decent bloke.

He's also a very, very average manager. He's got no European experience (We are back in Europe next season remember). He's got no experience of big name players or how to handle them. He's got no big club experience or how to handle the fans, the media or expectations of such a club. He's got no experience of big money transfers. He's got no experience of Sky and the rest of the media putting the boot in just because he'll be LFC manager.

Basically nice guy. Woefully inadequate in every way for such a big job at this stage of his career.

It's like us hiring an office cleaner that started on the YTS last October when we want a dynamic international project manager.

It will end in tears. It's just as obvious as the Hodgson appointment.

Ridiculous from FSG. Even more ridiculous from those advising them.
Football has reached the ninth gate of farce and pathetic, unbelievable trite nonsense. It's supposed to be a game and it's turned into pantomime, hype, quilts and bellends.

As someone based in the US, I will tell you guys one thing. Roberto Martinez made a BIG impact on the US audience over the summer of 2010 in his coverage of the World Cup on ESPN networks. It was universally accepted that he was the kind of gentle soft spoken person who exuded intelligence and know-how about the game.

Like I pointed out in another thread (regarding Owen Coyle four days ago): Presenting your view points in an articulate matter and carrying yourself in a dignified matter DOES NOT imply you have tactical intelligence.

Tell him to make a big impact on the premier league then. Ps what do yanks know about soccer?

The problem is we get this wrong it's going to fuck us over again. We need the correct appointment, not someone who is going to step into a job as their "big first club" job. We need someone who has been there before, who has handled top flight players, who can attract players, who can go out and get the necessary people we need to get back into a top 4 position. While Martinez might play nice football, do we really want to see if he is ready to handle a big club when we are trying to get back to being a top 4 club, and then what if he fails? We are fucked royally.

If FSG want to make their intent known go get a world class manager, do anything possible to get him, make a statement, this statement says "we have very little idea what we are doing and hopefully we don't fuck it up too badly"

While my past two posts have been saying that Martinez isn't a massive overachiever, I don't think we can only be looking for people who have been there and done it. Mainly because the level of expectation at the club outweighs the quality of the team at present, so we can't attract those top names in reality.

As many people bring up Benitez as a candidate, what had he done to be installed manager of a team that appeared in the two previous Champions League Finals?

Hodgson-esque appointment if true. Massive, MASSIVE step backwards.

It might be in the sense people have question marks over him, but his whole philosophy is completely different to Hodgson

All I can say is i am a fan of him but maybe i thought it was too soon for him, but he deserves a chance and i'll be right behind him if its his job

Nothing against him and i'm not jumping to conclussions, but the owners have been banging on about getting back into the champions league and back to the top of the premier league ASAP.

Now im sorry but a man with Martinez record should not even figure in those ideas no offence to him, if we are serious about getting back to the top soon then we need an experienced manager with european experience, we are after all back in europe this year.

This is not the calibre of manager we should be interviewing.
Somebody said recently that having Rafa as the manager means not giving a shit who you get in a Champions' League draw...........

Martinez is also too 'pally' with ferguson and moyes.

Next thing you know is we will be giving our best youth players to the bitters for a few magic beans and a curly wurly.

Grow up man.

I'd hardly call him 'pally' with demento, Martinez is firmly in the Rafa camp. He was asked to go out to dinner with Fergie and his bum chums by Dave Whelan, so he did because thats what his boss asked him to do. Thats all it was. He is actually very close friends with Rafa. Infact who knows, it could be Rafa who is advising FSG.

This whole win percentage is pissing me off.  First of all I want to say I'd like Rafa or Klopp.

Now to give Martinez a little credit, this 26% win ratio is with fucking Wigan who lets be honest have no fans and no ambition.  For the record his win percentage at Swansea was 50%.

Not happy with how the club are going about things but lets see where it goes.

Does anyone giving Martinez* abuse not realise that If he ends up being appointed, you as fans will be expected to support him wholeheartedly. Posting your disgust at him being spoken to as a potential candidate will make you look like a complete whopper if he is eventually appointed.

(*name can be replaced for posting in any other potential manager threads)

So fans who express disapointment about a managerial candidate would look like whoppers if that candidate was given the job?

How does that work. I`m lost

liverpool are "talking" to martinez. he is not the new manager. he could be and we all should back him.
some on here have got the impression that the supporters can run the club. for everyone that wants rafa, somebody won't like him. some like mourinho i detest him. capello just does not excite me. we could end up with the biggest name and they turn out crap. we need to get back to supporting this club not tearing it apart at every chance we get.
rafa at valencia was FSGs' ideal manager/coach. given players and he molded them into a team that punched above their weight. he now wants more control. if it is martinez then so be it. he would not be my choice. klopp is the ideal choice imo but i can't see it happening.

we can evaluate the new manager when he is appointed

Why the fuck should we back him ?

Can we take it for granted that we understand there might be other candidates if it really is an interview process - this is just debating martinez' credentials.

I do like roberto martinez as a man but it's a complete punt giving him this job. You've risked something that was known with Kenny, something that was a work in progress for a complete shot in the dark. He needs to have the season of his lifetime first time. madness.

Will wait and see who the other candidates are and what happens but looks martinez would probably be cheaper and less demanding than other names in the hat. pretty obvious if FSG head that way.

The BBC's Ian McGarry says we've invited Brendan Rodgers for an interview, too:

So, no shock that Brendan Rodgers is one of the managers #LFC have invited for interview for head coach job. And the other candidate to be interviewed for #LFC head coach is Roberto Martinez. I think both Rodgers/Martinez have proven coaching qualities which applied could improve #LFC. Club want stability/continuity. Both fit bill.

Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas= failure at Chelsea

Martinez has no proven track record at the highest level. Hodgson's CV was 100 times more impressive. Really, ask yourself, would this guy be considered for the manager's job at Real Madrid or Barcelona? No. Maybe in five to ten years if he proves he can hack it at the top but not now. You don't sack King Kenny to appoint the manager of Wigan and Swansea. That would be the ultimate insult. It is also too much of a risk when you have someone of the calibre of Rafa Benitez waiting in the wings. My god, how low are we going to sink?

If it is Martinez it is as much for his media persona as anything else.

His sides do play nice football and I quite like him actually but keeping Wigan in the Prem and smiling at the cameras in adversity is a long way away from the goldfish bowl of Liverpool.

Another thought on this, if FSG had appointed Martinez in January 2011 and not Kenny and the side had performed in exactly the same way I think he'd have been proclaimed a reasonable success by FSG and given time to make things better. I really do think it is as much Kenny's media battles as the results that have caused his demise.
